I'm almost done with LotGH. I can see why you pegged down the early episodes as the "bad" sections. A lot of the second half feels more satisfying, especially the space battles. Outside of IserLohn Fortress' first invasion, most didn't seem that memorable to me. The Battle of Vermilion and the IserLohn Corridor incidents were quite the opposite. Definitive visual improvements across the board, they also focus more on the deaths of those inside in a visceral way, instead of just showing a ship explode.

Well, the way the last 2 episodes were done, *some* fans may be more appeased skipping to End of Evangelion. Otherwise, 1-26 is the right order.

But generally yes, I consider it a must-see. Great characters, a storyline that slowly seems to warp and twist over time. It's as acclaimed as it is "controversial". In due part to the ending. Or at least that's my greatly abridged answer to the question.
