Gintama shouldn't be watched if you don't like/currently feel/don't want to watch comedy.
Thing is, the Amanto invasion has a lot of story behind it. Gintoki's back story is especially tragic, and it's only been fully revealed until like... a few months ago.
The anime will go into Gin's story bit by bit, every ten or twenty episodes or so. The main plot is actually really good once you piece it all together, and the gag stuff is really just a device (well, it acts like one, I'm sure it wasn't Sorachi's original intention) to expand on character relationships.
Let's say, Yorozuya. At first they don't really care about each other, then you're around 25 episodes in and you really get a sense on how they've become like a family.
Anyway, that's enough me failing my persuade checks. Just watch it when you're feeling up for some comedy and get pleasantly surprised later on by just how good it is.

It's 265 episodes, so it's not really going to get you hooked from the start (but that varies because I certainly was.)
When Sorachi started, I'm sure he never meant for it to be so popular. But like Geth said, it worked so well because it was Shounen Jump.

Yeah I think.
But wanting to and it actually happening is different.
Gag manga is hard to pull off with 500+ chapters. Especially something as popular as Gintama is.
Okay, it's not One Piece (because nothing is One Piece) but for something meant for the lolz it's gone places other manga with the same intent normally wouldn't.
So I'm glad he got where he wanted to go because Gintama is f*cking fantastic.
The serious arcs helped, of course. So it hasn't really survived on 100% gag 
So there's a huge chance I'm talking out of my ass again calling Gintama a 'gag manga' when it's really a blend of lots of things.
In other words, a shounen...
Jeez I'm f*cking stupid most of the times.
