Not really nowadays more like always, the first anime show ever came from a manga you know.

And it is sort of true that a manga should be "popular" to become an anime in today's world, it still does not always have to be "mega super-popular" to become one. Look at Beelzebub for what I mean the manga is sometimes popular one week and then on death row the other and that is not even getting into the fact that it's anime is crap.

And funny that you said Eva since it did have a manga before the show came out but it really is nothing like the show and it was only made to promote the show.

But even so Eva the manga is still a good read for any fan/nonfan of the series.

Hmm. Interesting. Might give the Eva manga a try - though I'm a bit scaptical towards it, as it clearly isn't what the makers had intended.

Beelzebub the anime is pretty horrible (and quite popular, as far as I understand). :P

I'm just frustrated that there hasn't been any quality, overall, lately. That might be because of changed values and such (tieing up with the principles of the economy), but really - ten years ago there was no such tendency as to put forth loud and mindless action-fighting-flicks constantly, while ignoring any in-depth topic or simply well-made, filler-free shows done with the love of the writer (be it "cult" anime or whatever).

That reminds me - I just can't finish the Freeza arc - I feel personally insulted by it even. It's all about the pointless recaps and a forever-on-going battle, which is overly simplistic (as opposed to the original dragon ball). There are cool parts here and there, but only when Chi-chi or some other earthling will get some "other filler" time. Actually, at the moment, I'd bring a parallel with DA:O and 2. I felt much the same here as with DB-vs-DBZ. :P

For Chrissake. FIVE MINUTES in-anime time gets covered by at least ten episodes.:blink:-_-

You should give Eva's manga a try, even without being much like the show it's still good.

Nope Beelzebub the anime is not "really" popular, hell the manga readers(like me!) more or less all hate the show.

And they get a bit better after the Freeza arc but still it's a Toei anime that got too close to the manga's run, so filler/recaps or the show gets the can, sad but true. And yeah the five minutes thing is still to this day one of Toei's big **** ups.

Also the Boo arc is most like Dragon Ball in it's older days, just to let you know.

Ten years ago they still had shows with a lot of mindless fighting(or just fighting I guess? i don't recall many mindless ones) buit it is worse now but I would say "otaku" shows are the real evil here like Highschool of the Dead.

And I think what you mean by "filler-free" is an anime not from a manga right?(that is also good). Well hard to say what will be good today or not, hell the only anime I watch nowadays is the new Hunter x Hunter(it may be from a manga but no filler :P) since well it has the best story and characters right now in the anime world.

@Soronnar They are not fighting for hours and it takes a lot of ki to blow up a planet or you have to have someting like Freeza's move. And what eroeru said(sort of).=]

From the front page of animefushigi:

"Gyo
anime of the week

Summary:
Something in Okinawa reeks, and it isn’t long before Tadashi and his girlfriend Kaori realize that the smell is coming from dead fish, which are walking out of the sea. The fish are fused to metal legs and are infected with a disease contractable by humans that was invented as a weapon by the Japanese government. After Kaori is infected, Tadashi goes to find a solution to this putrid takeover, if there even is an answer to be found. Watch"

So, the next most dramatic and in-depth series we can find is "zombie-fish with robotic legs made by the Japanese government attacking a town with stench".

Anime is doing well I feel.

It's based on a manga that was published in 2001. The manga version in my opinon is better too, the movie has the story progress on hyperdrive, while the manga puts the horror elements in a more steady pace so you can soak it all up better. The movies plot is also changed drastically, with characters that aren't in the manga, to full on role swaps.

But all in all both the manga and the anime movie have one thing in common, and that's the fact that either you will find the stuff that's happening truly horrifying or outright hilarious. Worth the watch in any case to be honest.

Gyo will not be a long series since the manga from 2001-2002 was only two books.

Funny, the guy who made it also made Tomie and that got made into a ton of movies, Tomie is more or less the Michael Myers(but with more of a... I don't know oddness? to it) of Japan in my view.

Edit: Mystic dream beat me to it.=]

Tomie is a rec worth having an eye on I guess.

Another thing - it's rather interesting that recent anime that has had some quality to it (in my eyes), has been exclusively samurai-based.

Katanagatari was the best one - but I'm also interested in House of Five Leaves, Hyouge Mono, and to an extent, Gintama. Though I haven't watched more than a few episodes of each of the three.

They're pretty okay, I'd think?...

But Brave Ten seems , doesn't it?

Junji Ito is a weird dude. Personally, I think that Uzumaki and The Enigma of Amigara Fault were his best.

In terms of manga, everybody should read Appleseed and Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita. Even up until the really crappy parts of Last Order. Which got pretty crappy.

That was my original main-frown-inducer - when I tried some episodes in the middle. That was some 4 or so years ago. :D
Though this time round I can give it some ad hoc explanations... For example, they will create some barrier or something around their hands when propelling the giant balls of whatever into space. And also, both seemed to be inclined to finish a fight otherwise - just that giving out full power without looking into your opponent would be a mistake (and maybe boring or unmoral or something).

No proper explanation was ever given.
They are propeling those balls into eachother. And they are often enough standing on the ground.

Interestingly enough, even tough the character in SS are SUPPOSEDLY redicolously pwoerfull, at least in the anime tehy are never shown like that. Not once do you see anything remotely planet/continent - busting (even tough when described, the techniques are described rather poeticly).
I like that. Far more down-to-earth approach/interpretation.

In Japan, Anime has garnered a lvel of respect akin to the effect hollywood has on North America. Voice acting in japan is taken just as seriously as acting in North America, and the voice actors put much more emotion in their roles. While here, anime and video games are treated as second class mediums inferior to blockbuster cinema.

Also Japanese views on male beauty are not of giant hulking testosterone figures, and allow for a more liberal approach, like the concept of bishonen. Females are not always subject to over-sexualization, and are just on equal terms as males. Though skimpy attire is still fun to look at, but it's usually pointed out and taken humorously

@Lotion Soronnar
Yeah, it did seem a bit "unbalanced" as far as the (imaginary) physics was concerned. But the series never, at least until this point, took itself seriously, and when it did, the heroics were hence more likeable. Although the Freeza arc does take the fighting stuff too far, the general attraction is still there. Mythological power and themes vs the not-so-serious comedy. So I do agree on the poetic nature of (some of) the fights.

@Mecha
I do agree with you. Anime is gravely underrated, simply because it seems foreign, and people want to settle with their mistakenly simple and easy misconceptions.
Though on the over-sex, I think many would oppose you - Some Geth maybe?

Hey anime fans! I have a question for you guys. I was planning to make my own thread, but then I decided I could also just ask it here.

I have currently plenty of free time, so I'm watching some anime again. Because ME3 reminded me of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (reapers = anti-spirals) I decided to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann again (it has been a while since I last saw that anime, so it was fun to watch it agan).

I'm currently finished with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (only 27 episodes) but now I'm craving for more mecha awesomeness.

I've already watched pretty much everything related to Gundam Wing, but besides TTGL and GW I haven't watched many mecha anime (because most of them suck).

Can anyone here give me a few tips on mecha anime that don't actually suck? Which are the best mecha anime out there besides TTGL (which is obviously the best) and GW?

Eureka Seven is very good and also Space Runaway Ideon if you like some of the old school mecha anime series that one has a great story.

Thanks!

Do these 2 series have lots over-the-top action like Gurren Lagann? Or are they more focussed on drama, like Gundam Wing? Or perhaps inbetween?

Yeah how dare they give me no proper explanation for this silly gag battle series!=]

I mean this is a series that had ghosts made of ki that could talk...

And all being a SSJ is, is just the character's power multiply by 50x times its normal amount.

Hell being SSJ really is not all that great when you know this.

Vegetto > Boohan > Bootenks > Gohan > SSJ3 Gotenks > Booccolo > Super Boo > Kid Boo >= SSJ3 Goku.

Just because of the strains of SSJ3 on a living body, more or less mind you.

@Luc0s Code Geass is only sort of good for one season and then gets really bad in season two.

And try GaoGaiGar if you want something like TTGL since GaoGaiGar is it's dad, in my view.=]

Definitely deserves a watch since it's one of the highest rated animes out there.
I personally find it overrated but so many people disagree and I'd be lying my ass off if I said that I didn't enjoy it. The second season annoyed me but had a good conclusion that made it all worth the time it in the end.

Other than that:
Full Metal Panic! (like the side story season "Fumoffu" and  the second season in particular)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Eureka Seven (the kids annoy the hell out of me though)

Hey anyone want to post some of their favorite anime openings and endings?

Hunter x Hunter(1999) opening 2 was always a great imo.

Digimon Adventure opening 1 had a great feel to it.

This is just to get the ball rolling.

I'll watch Code Geass first. After that, I'll give Full Metal Panic a try.

I'll go for Death Note's first opening:

Damn that opening was awesome on so many levels. The music in that opening is awesome and I love the art style too.

Yeah Death Note had good songs that fit it, like Ohba and Obata's other series Bakuman had songs that fit it as well.

Like this
not my type of music at all but it does fit the show really well.

the greatest series you will ever watch

it starts from two young boys living underground, and progresses into mechs the size of the universe

Many people have also noted the similarities between the antagonists of TTGL with the reapers

Looks promising. Seems to be an 80's or early 90's cartoon, am I correct? Reminds me of my sweet child hood and the epic cartoons I used ot watch when I was just a lil' kid.

Speaking of those cartoons, are they are epic anime series that resemble M.A.S.K or King Arthur and The Knights of Justice? Those cartoons used to rule my childhood and I wonder if there is any anime out there that can give me a similar experience.

GaoGaiGar was made back in 1997.

And I guess Saint Seiya would sort of be like that King Arthur show(never saw it so I really do not know.).

Except that King Arthur takes place in the medieval era and it seems that Saint Seiya takes place in the old Greek era. But I do see some similarities yeah (both series implement sci-fi elements into a fantasy setting it seems). Perhaps I'll give this anime a try in the future. I'll put it on my "anime recommended by friends" list. ^_^
