Yes, I certainly saw the "dark theme" being a major reason behind its existence, especially in regards to current events (100 year war). Though it begs the question whether the setting in which Berserk is portrayed has always been in such a state, and if so when exactly did this entity come into creation? If we apply our own history, we've seen more conflict than peaceful eras, though that comes down to the scale of conflicts. It really raises the question if any kind of struggle has empowered it, and when exactly has the entity come into fruition in human history and has started to control humans destiny.

 

Nice observation, and I do like if that would be the case. It certainly would bring a rather "neo-utilitarian" perspective into the setting, which would have some interesting views that could be reflected by the adversaries, especially by Griffith and his development that underwent in the story.

 

Well whatever the case, hopefully further reading will bring exposition on this. Appreciate the comment, Isi!

I won't answer the bolded directly but I will say that it's something the future chapters touch upon. There are key things about how the world and the things outside the world works that you've not yet seen or heard much upon so it's easy to only see the dark aspects of it, when in truth there is so much more. The demons and God may at this point be the more prominent forces that control human fate, but there are other forces in the world that have faded and long since been forgotten, the presence of faeries slightly touches upon this.

 

We don't know how long exactly God has been in existence, but based on what he told Griffith and a few other factors that come later we can guess it's been going on for at least hundreds, if not a few thousand years, at the very least since the creation of God Hand Void.

 

Like Sim mentioned, later on you will meet characters that are much more familiar with how magic works and they will talk more on the subject, though there's still a lot even those of us who are caught up don't know and can only speculate on.
