It's hilarious how Puck's dialogue in the first arc amounts to "Guts!" 80% of the time xD

 

As a device he also serves as a good comedic touch to smooth out the edges. Sometimes when stories are as dark and tragic as Berserk it's hard to get that balance right or sometimes it might just come off as trying too hard.

 

Though I admit, sometimes Berserk can take it too far.

 

I think Vagabond is really the only manga in the seinen category that has balanced humour and drama perfectly.

 

I laughed quite a bit in Vagabond despite it being a very serious story.

 

Very true. Comic relief characters tend to be a hit and miss kind of an affair, and fortunately (for me at least) Berserk seems to find just the right amount of balance, just like with Vagabond as you mentioned.

 

Though what I respect when it comes to Puck is that he doesn't solely exist as a means to portray some more "light-hearted undertones" within the narrative, but he also serves an auxiliary role in relation to Gatts.

After the Eclipse incident, both Gatts and Casca suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (more evident with Casca), and Gatts confines himself into isolation, hoping that would stop him from going mad. While the reasoning stems mostly from the demons that endlessly haunt him, it is certainly not a healthy lifestyle for his mentality, since living in constant fear of your surroundings and  being too excluded from society is unhealthy in a lot of ways, and a major reasoning behind his schizoid personality (especially since he is quite an emotional individual).

 

The introduction of Puck in the very first volume servers as a nice transition for the reader on the character of Gatts and the initial impression one has of him from his actions. He is cold, ruthless and amoral, and just like Puck reflects that he must have gone through hell (which Gatts has) it is then we as a reader experiences in the Golden Age story what transpired beforehand. Once it again hits to the current timeline, while he is a colder person, most readers have warmed up to him now that they know why he has such a personality, and I couldn't help but notice how rather different Gatts is when Puck is with him, compared to how he acted in the very first volume.

 

At first I thought it was just me subconsciously believing he is less cold due to having read the backstory, since while he is without a doubt apathetic, he interacts both with Puck and the side characters with less hostility, which I think stems from Puck's cheerful nature and how the always points out when Gatts does something wrong. While Gatts at most cases shrugs him off, I do think a lot of things Puck says hits home.

I promise my updates will more than likely slow down once I finish the next chapter but my net died last night before I could gush. So, Guardians of Desire 5:

Ha. Remember when I said I live for grey characters, and that as far as GoD (a fitting acronym if I ever saw one) 3 was concerned, I could understand why the Count did what he did? Well it turns out that GoD 5 hammered that home far too well when the truth comes out regarding his wife. This might be a little disjointed cause I'm just waking up and I have a lot of thoughts and feelings regarding this chapter but I'll try and make sense:

 

I didn't mention it earlier but I had a sneaking suspicion that Griffith was part of the Godhand. See in the beginning of tagging chapters, I was using the title pages of the chapters to get the names and I paused for a moment when I got to the one in GoD 5 that shows Femto for the first time. Back then I didn't think anything of it but the last few days my subconscious thoughts ran away with the idea. Finally making it to 5, I told Isi the theory I remained quiet on here and he was nice enough to humor me until the few pages in it takes Guts to tell me I was right.

 

One thing I can't help but be amused by is that earlier in the chapter, before I got to the point where the Count's truth is told, I told Isi that betrayals of the heart are the worst and most damaging kind. I said this initially with regards to Guts and Griffith because even without getting the proper details still, what little I saw while tagging the Golden Age arc, Guts' reactions in the chapter and how our talks here have suggested that their relationship will be a key focal point to many a discussion.

 

Turns out that little idle comment ended up pretty much being the driving force in that chapter. So again, does it excuse what the Count has done? No. But do I understand why he did it? Far better than I originally did in GoD 3. The Invocation of Doom is an interesting concept. See, I'm a horribly sentimental critter and I admit I feel things to emotional extremes at times (probably easily recognized in how my over-excitement leads me to write these books...) so the concept behind what is required for the sacrifice, someone that you both love and hate with all your being, yet they are so entwined with you that being without them feels like being without part of yourself. Yeah we'll just say that as of now, Berserk knows exactly how to speak to me on a level I emotionally understand and it makes me love the series all the more.

 

I know this stuff is spoilery, I know I'm so far behind, still in the prologue and it would make actually conversing with you guys very difficult but I also haven't been this mentally excited about something since my first go through PMMM last year and felt I needed to gush. It's also safe to say outside of spoiler that the last few pages of GoD 4 were absolutely *astounding*. From the moment the Behelit reacted right on to the end, my brain couldn't handle the amazing. One more chapter to go in this arc. I can only imagine the ride it's going to take me on...

Shirou is just there to have exposition dumped on him, and have the pretty girls fall for him because protagonist.
He's just not a deep enough character to have strong feelings about one way or another.
He's like Sam Witwicky from the first 3 Transformers movies in that regard.

I never said no one had to like Gilgamesh. Hell I think he's funny in Carnival Phantasm.

But my own biased opinion is why I don't like him. I don't understand why you felt it nessacary to whine about my own biased stance on him.
I may have provoked it first. But that's because it was a post from Sim. Which means it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
