Google gave me a song from an anime I've haven't watched.

Sorry to say that I don't get the reference  :(.

The image is a very clear reference to a recurring scene in Revolutionary Girl Utena. Sorry I didn't really have time to actually explain it earlier.

Video behind spoiler tags because light spoilers. Relevant scene around the 2:30 mark.

Oh you're right, I never knew that.

I always assumed it had something to do with Archer's ability so I never thought that it was a reference to another anime.

Well, I learn something new every day.

I think there's something to be said about an anime that accomplishes as much as LOTGH. It's my second watch of the series and it still feels like I've climbed the top a mountain. Politics, war, history, philosophy, human conflict and ideology. It does a ton of things right and yes, despite my obvious ultra-bias, it does some things wrong too. Regardless, it still remains my favourite anime of all time, not because I declare it "the greatest" (because there are other shows that are just as good in different ways) but because it really is an experience to go through. This is one hundred and ten episodes of characters, themes and narrative, it's one hundred and ten f*cking episodes of provocative material, drama, comedy and foppery and whim. From yare yares to nanis this series has done a lot for me and will continue to do a lot for me in the future. So until next time, keep on rockin' that tea, Wenli.

Wow, that was very eloquent Sim and enlightening as well. I'm only on Episode 4 but, I'm enjoying it. I like how it's not your typical good vs evil story( in fact, I'm not sure if there is a bad side). I could be wrong but neither side seems to be the big bad.

I'm going to give it a try one of these days. I have the suspicion that I'll like it, but its length is a turn off and I don't know if I can handle it (that's what she said).

I understand its length being a turn off. But one of these days you should tackle it, that's for sure.

I love politics in fiction (not in real life) and can keep up with them pretty well, so I think I'd really enjoy LotGH.

I have it and Gintama on my list, I'd really like to watch both of them, but they're so long

I'm kind of to where I can only watch one anime at once or else I end up thinking about the others when I'm watching and it drives me so crazy. I'm the same way with video games, I absolutely have to finish one before I can move on to the next. It'd take over 30 hours to finish LotGH and 60 for Gintama. Couple that with the fact that I get into moods to watch certain types of anime (comedy, fighting, mecha, etc). That's why I've been putting both of those off.

I'll definitely get to them one day, it'll likely be after I whittle my watch-list down considerably though. That's a good thing though, because if LotGH is as good as you say it is and I think it's going to be, then it'll be a hard act for anything else to follow. ^_^

There's a way to deal with this though. You can just re-watch something truly awful a bunch of times until you start going crazy, and then anything else you watch after that is bound to seem great again.

I recommend episode 18 of Vampire Princess Miyu. It somehow manages to go beyond the "so bad it's good" point and into the "so bad it's bad again" category. Watching it four of five times in a row is bound to make most people want to kill themselves.

I've seen it listed as episode 17 on youtube though. Not sure which episode they skipped. Anyway, it's the one called "City of Illusion". I've watched a lot of crap, but this one is part of a special caste of crap.

LOL

The only anime that I've seen that's super horrible is the new Gundam, Gundam: G no Reconguista. I couldn't stand anything about that.

Vampire Princess Miyu as a whole isn't so bad though. Most episodes range from good to okay-ish. They were probably just really drunk when they made that episode. Or high. Or both. Also they were obviously on a really tight budget. Maybe because they spent part of it on drugs and booze.

It's all goooood.

Take your time with it, Vroom :-)

Only reason I b*tched Chewin into watching it because I knew pre-anime-thread Chewin loved the same stuff KoP liked so I knew he'd really like LOTGH.

Also my 'jeez' posts are jokes :D

So yeah, they're huge tasks, and you might find it slow at times (because it is a slow anime) but if you love politics in fiction then you'll definitely get what you're looking for.

So anyway.

Watched Episode 1 of Hellsing Ultimate dubbed.

Crazy ass awesome sh*t there.

I wish everything was just voiced by Crispin' Freesex.

Well, tbh, the dub fluctuates between great, decent and downright disgusting. It's not the acting itself, it's the...accents.

Not to p*ss in their cola but couldn't these guys find somebody who could at least pull a decent English accent? And here I'm talking about someone who seems like she's gonna be very important.

Police girl.

I feel so sorry for the VA having to force that terribad thing she calls an English accent. And hell, it seems like she's really struggling with it because sometimes I don't even understand what she's freaking saying!

It's like she's trying to pull a cockney accent with a burger in her mouth.

Crispin Freesex is awesome as always, Amaraki from Ghost in the Shell is there too, Irish dude is okay and Hellsing herself is fine.

But police girl? Ugh.

It doesn't help that so far she's very bland.

I thought the length would be an issue also, as well how old it is, but it's just a series which shows that ideas trump animation quality, structure, format, length, whatever, etc. It was pretty entertaining (as far as anime goes) for almost the entire show.

*LOGH snip*

Sim knows how to lay that sh*t down! There's a reason to why LOGH is one of my all time favorite shows in general, and you pretty much summarized it.

I love politics in fiction (not in real life) and can keep up with them pretty well, so I think I'd really enjoy LotGH.

*snip*

Aye, the length can be seen as a challenged, though I recommend breaking the series down. For example, watch only the first season (26 episodes) and then do something else (watch another anime or whatever) and then pick up where you left. That way you don't have to have a "1 episode down, 109 to go" kind of mindset.

Regarding LotGH's length I'll admit that before I started watching that the length was a concern but once I actually started watching became more of a blessing because it made it clear to me that the show take its time to do everything as awesome as possible so knowing that I had that many episodes of it to watch was instead of a challenge something really good!

It's a quite fabulous show!

If I were to start watching Anime where do I begin?

Good gateway anime?

Well... in my opinion, a good gateway anime certainly doesn't have to be the best, but it does have to break all misconceptions of what it really is.

Also, I don't know if you can handle English Subtitles just yet, it varies from person to person. However, if you do like the shows below, do try to wean yourself with subs, there's a ton of good anime out there that can only be found in subs.

So with that said...

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex + 2nd GIG + Solid State Society (watch in that order.)

Ghost in the Shell 1995 movie (same setting, same characters, just a different story. Watch this first if you want to.)

Death Note (not the best anime around, but it's a lot easier to "get" that the above, which really asks for your brain to be switched on.)

Black Lagoon Seasons 1, 2 and Roberta's Blood Trial.

Code Geass (a good anime that gets let down by its second season, R2. Still worth the watch.)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (my second favourite of all time, there's this version on the 2003 one called 'Fullmetal Alchemist' both are said to be great so watch which one you want. FMAB follows the manga a lot closer.)

Samurai Champloo.

Cowboy Bebop (considered the best anime ever made by many poeple.)

That's all I can think of right now.

These can all be found on kissanime or other anime streaming sites. The reason it's such a short list is because.... well, simply put, a lot of dubs are sh*t. Those above, though... they're really god tier.

Now pick which one to watch. The most... err "complex" one, is Ghost in the Shell. So if you want to pick something that's serious with provocative material, complex themes and such and such then go for Ghost in the Shell.

Not that the others don't have the above, but with Ghost, it's a lot more obvious that it's there. Cowboy Bebop has a metric ton of depth too it as well, even Black Lagoon explores themes like humanity, corrupt society etc...

The "simplest" up there is Death Note, which really is just a great game of cat and mouse between a criminal and a detective.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a fantastic adventure, something I, the biggest Tolkien fanboi in existence, put right next LOTR.

Now if you do wanna watch subs, then you're in luck because there are a TON of subs I can recommend to you.

P.S

DO NOT WATCH ATTACK ON TITAN WITH ENGLISH DUBS. IT IS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND SHOULD BE INCINERATED WITH LOTS AND LOTS OF FIRE AND STUFF.

So if you do want to get into subs, Attack on Titan is really good to start with.

I'll leave the honours of explaining Madoka Magica (god tier anime) for bro or Isi or Anima.

Of course, there's Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but I don't know if you're up to 110 episodes yet xD

But all ze drama.
