Oh, boy, I was actually expecting a can of worms when I saw my notifications as I got home. I'm pleasantly surprised by the responses though.
But hardly an alternative.
Hell, it's like if the LOTR films went from Frodo meeting Aragon, skipped to Helms Deep and finished off when they bowed at Minas Tirith.
Yeah... the ending of that movie is only 300 pages into a 1400+ page manga.
It gets the point across in like, the 10 minutes the movie lasts (war, environment, messiah figure etc...) but it's so underdeveloped in all these areas that it comes off as... well, bad.
So watch the movie first if you're gonna get into Nausicaa. Cos after you read the manga you'll never want to go back.
But at the very least...
It's not iRobot bad.
God that film is awful in every way possible (as an adaptation, of course.)
Don't know your reasons...
But it's a shame.
You're the kind of dude who'd love Berserk and Vagabond.
Especially since you have a great eye for detail and nuance.
It'd come in handy with two stories that heavily rely on their art to tell the story.
Especially Vagabond.
The problem I have with comic books is that unlike novels, there are never enough words or space to set a stage for the audience, whether it be in terms of sound, atmosphere or a feeling. In novels you've got whole pages of writing that solely consists of setting the mood and building each scene in great detail for the reader and draw the frames from which the imagination can work from.
What I love about animation, cinema, even an interactive medium like video games, is how they are able to tell a story without words.. through the audio, or just the environment itself. In video games, atmosphere can count for a lot, and it's something you can't find in a non-interactive medium, as Christophe Gans discovered to his smelly baguette-eating cost, which is what makes video games stand out and one of the many reasons why film adaptations of the latter never work out. They usually forget to consider that it's important to provide interpretation with a personal touch that distinguish it, and make it feel like a new experience for all audiences, while also remaining faithful towards the source material.
I don't find comics to be all that engaging, I used to, anyway. I loved the Batman comics and graphic novels but comics don't do it for me anymore.
I think Miyazaki succeeded, anyway, at least at what he does best. Providing a competent female lead with a good supporting cast, a gorgeous art-design and fascinating creatures. It's a stamp of Miyazaki's style and I thought it was excellent as always.
You know, I can actually agree with you in a sense regarding sound and comics, Chris. Sound design is something I ramble far too much about myself. The way I personally counter that is to have music going while I read. I usually try and go for pure instrumental stuff for the most part, just because my brain personally gets distracted trying to process what I'm reading against the lyrics my ears are hearing. Sometimes it works out where the music fits what's going on in the scene far too well and my brain just runs with it. There's actually a proper Berserk speech there regarding atmosphere based against listening to all the OSTs for the series and movies while I read, but my brain still isn't awake enough to make it. ![]()
That being said, when it comes to Western comics, I'm intensely selective these days. Watchmen, half of Preacher and a little chunk of Sandman being the only ones I currently own, though I used to also have a good portion of Sin City and the Dark Knight Returns.
Also meant to mention that I do have Vagabond on my get to eventually list. The good buzz here intrigues me and I know I'm going to eventually need something to fill the Berserk Void (hurhur, I did a thing).
Aye, most people here are either under or little over 20.
Except Isi and Chewin who are in their 30s or something
I am actually 30 myself, and get off my lawn. ![]()
So many old people that are going to die before me here!
So old!

I thought you were Rah for a second there.
For half a second there I wondered if I had posted that without knowing
Scary!

Well, the interesting thing is that it doesn't even have to be instrumental audio alone -- It can be the sounds of a planet, pouring rain, silence, all of it factor into building atmosphere and setting a stage through audio. In the west you'd usually always find a wall-to-wall approach, whereas as in Japanese animation, audio & sound has been exonerated. They utilized it whenever they want. There's a memorable little moment in Miyazaki's Porco Rosso from 1992, where the music completely disperses, everything is silenced, until one hears the blowing of the wind, the rain pouring down or an engine running. It's such an incredibly tense thing to behold.
Rah: I'm not sure I should be sensei to anyone.
Beneath all the walls of text and general hurduring, there's the hidden darker side that I only ramble about outside of the public eye, X3
ETA: Chris, I remember a while back you had made a post with sound design comparing Eastern and Western approaches in film to how sound is used (the main point I remember being that Eastern films aren't afraid to use silence to build an emotional point around which I admit I'm rather fond of). I know I liked it when you posted it but it's also been something I've thought around, because sound really can make or break a moment depending on how it's used.

Darker sides are the best!

My masochist side is tingling.

I really do get what you are saying Chris.
Still wish you would give Nausicaä a read.
It has Miyazaki's writing at his best here.
Hahaha
Serious If I had the money I would even buy you it.
I might be able to force Sim to buy it for you tho!
I am actually 30 myself, and get off my lawn.
Pfft. 30's nothing, especially when you have a hip heart!
No, I'll never join you!I really do get what you are saying Chris.

No, really, it does -- In fact, it's stapled together with the stylistic quality that he'd later pour into what eventually became Studio Ghibli. I suppose one can argue whether or not it is among his best, but I'd argue it's a classic. It has Miyazaki's writing at his best here.
Hahaha
Go on.Serious If I had the money I would even buy you it.
I might be able to force Sim to buy it for you tho!
And House just summed the aforementioned dark side up perfectly. Yuuup, sensei Ani is just another one of the pesky masochists that live here in the thread. ![]()
It's me or Sim! I know, I too would choose death first.
Was talking about the manga there.
I really view it as the best comic ever made.
So I do mean it when I say it's Miyazaki's best writing.
The movie is okay, I would call it a classic too, but it's just not as good as the manga. The manga itself is more than just a classic, it's really a great work of art.
And 100% worth owning.
So Sim buy it for Chris.
Dunno if I posted this yet:
Akari?
Well that was faster than I expected. And I thought nobody ever paid any real attention to stuff I posted. Must have done some digging.
Yes, Mizunashi Akari is my favorite anime character. Actually, she's my favorite fictional character. No other even comes close. Though part of me wasn't too keen on sharing that. I can be pretty selfish when it comes to my favorite things, and I'm not necessarily inclined to discuss them.
I also thought nobody but me had watched Aria around here ![]()

This thread is home to masochists, sadists, lolicons, perves and crazies.
Best thread clearly.

Best thread clearly.
I want to point out I was unaware of my sadism until this thread and Plutia somehow became at fault.
I came here a crazy though.
