It should be noted that Black Lagoon isn't a very consistent show in the way of having a clear design focus on what it wants to be. It is part action show, part gun porn, part love story, part comedy and part social criticism. It just happens that a big part of the social criticism aspect is focused in the character of Rock and how he acts/interacts, whereas the other aspects I mentioned are split pretty evenly across all characters, making Rock stand out.
I can see that, but I still hate him.
So about halfway through Hyouka. I've come to appreciate the kind of mystery this show deal with and how.. plausible it to some extent actually is

I did put it off for the same reason, was very skeptical of how they'd handle that kind of story but so far it's doing well. It do at least know how to do proper character growth with the protagonist.

Hyouka is a little bit slow and VERY "Japanese." If you prefer action-packed anime or comedy, it's probably not for you.
I really enjoyed it however. It is definitely one of my favorite anime of all time.

Hyouka is a solid mystery / slice of life anime. Though I wouldn't be surprised if an audience finds the show dull, due to the mystery aspects revolving around rather 'mundane' plots (e.g. why is a library book missing).
But I give credit to the show for managing to make each mystery entertaining enough, which it primarily manages to do with the cinematography as it uses it as an auxiliary to 'define' the narrative (people who have watched Monogatari series will find a lot of similarities).
I recommend it. Sadly the anime falls flat in the last episodes, wherein it simply ends. Nothing overly dramatic, but there is little to no closure and a season 2 is most likely a 'no go', as with many other anime. At least there are the light novels, which I might pick up sometime in the future.
Also, one can almost watch the show due to Chitanda alone. She is the very definition of "kawaii". Or annoying as f*ck, if you loathe her character stereotype.
I've watched more mundane shows before. Might as well give it a shot.
You'll very quickly understand if Hyouka is a show you'd like to continue watching or if it's unbearably dull.

Haha, just had the craziest dream I have to tell you all. It was about five people that were going to rob some super rich mansion on a cliff. Anyway all five of them were these insane parodies of movie troupes. Tough guy, smart chick etc. So they are all hooked up on a single rope scaling the cliff face and prankster guy reaches the top first* dramatic pause * he looks down with this crazy smile and pulls out a pair of child safety scissors( you know the bulky plastic ones with the different colored handles) and cuts the rope. I actually woke up laughing so hard my ribs hurt.
