Personally I though TTGL was meh.

And why did you think that my friend? I think TTGL belongs in my top 10 favorite anime of all time, maybe even in my top 5.

Speaking of a top anime list. I'm sure you guys have done this many times over, but once more cannot hurt, can it? Let's all post our top 5 anime! No Some Geth, I know this usually gets out of hand with you, posting a top 100 because you can't pick your favorite 5 :P, try to keep it at 5 and no more.

My top 5:

1. One Piece
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Death Note
4. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
5. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Hey anime fans! I have a question for you guys. I was planning to make my own thread, but then I decided I could also just ask it here.

I have currently plenty of free time, so I'm watching some anime again. Because ME3 reminded me of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (reapers = anti-spirals) I decided to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann again (it has been a while since I last saw that anime, so it was fun to watch it agan).

I'm currently finished with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (only 27 episodes) but now I'm craving for more mecha awesomeness.

I've already watched pretty much everything related to Gundam Wing, but besides TTGL and GW I haven't watched many mecha anime (because most of them suck).

Can anyone here give me a few tips on mecha anime that don't actually suck? Which are the best mecha anime out there besides TTGL (which is obviously the best) and GW?

Eureka Seven is very good and also Space Runaway Ideon if you like some of the old school mecha anime series that one has a great story.

Thanks!

Do these 2 series have lots over-the-top action like Gurren Lagann? Or are they more focussed on drama, like Gundam Wing? Or perhaps inbetween?

Probably more similar to Gundam Wing with deep character driven plots.

Can I make it a top 5 manga list?

My top 5 anime list never keeps itself in order but Cowboy Bebop is always at the top of it.

But I have never really made a top 100 list of anything just great stuff to good stuff to bad stuff to REALLY BAD stuff.=]

Luffy is also a fight-all-you-can character but a lot more interesting than Friend of All Living Things Gon from Hunter X Hunter, or Goku from Dragonball (who is also a Friend of All Living Things).

Basically, I hate "Friend of All Living Things" characters.

Also,lLife doesn't suck, life is awesome. I love life.

Because "normal" characters are more realistic and therefor easier to relate too. But I wouldn't say Tali is normal. Far from normal. There are many things I hate about Tali.

Basically, what I want for my characters, is flaws. And not the typical cliché flaws that aren't flaws (e.g. flaws that never really hinder the character at all). No, I want my characters seriously flawed and I want those flaws to bite them in the ass from time to time. Those characters are awesome.

A good example of a cool but flawed character would be Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher.

I was mostly (half-way) kidding. In fact, I knew I was younger than you (from some other thread... I just got 22 myself, though people think I'm way older, from my mannerisms and whatnot) and yeah, maybe it's just that I like the Friend of All Living Things.:P

(the life can suck part was partly humor, partly true... you got to have had some hard times yourself)

Geralt was a good example. I love the character - though probably for other reasons. I saw a similar do-good-unto-death principled look in his personality and motives.

A tough pick. Tengen Toppa is at the top 20 at least, but as for the top five...

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Paranoia Agent
3. FLCL

Now it gets more difficult... but I'd have to say

4. Clannad
5. Ergo Proxy

(the fifth can easily be Kanon, Honey & Clover, Baccano!, GITS, Tatami Galaxy, Nodame Cantabile, Vision of Escaflowne, Noein, Air Gear, Eden of the East, .hack/SIGN, Asatte no Houkou, Darker Than Black, Gurren Lagann, Death Note or Gantz as well)

I don't really get how Goku is a "Friend to All Living Things" since he beats most living things up.=]

Now Gon was somewhat that at the start of the series(still is), but all great Hunters in the making are good with animals... but then you got something like the Zaoldyeck's "pet" dog, that was more or less a monster, no making friends with that!

Actually, I take that back. I don't know one Friend to All Living Things who'd I really like, with the possible exception to Goku and such more diverse ones (not to mention real people - if they're not plain unintelligent)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.:P

I know what it means. I'm using it correctly.

TV tropes backs me up o nthis...you might want to look under ANIME EXAMPLES...

Hard to explain. Just didn't. Maybe becaue it tried to be too serious later on, while still being exceptionally silly?
Never liked Simon much either.

Aa, I forgot Ghibli.

Well, you can say Princess Mononoke and Totoro at least are candidates for the fifth place. :)
Actually, most any Ghibli release can fit the spot, but these are the two I've had the most long-term relationship with.

@Some Geth

Glad you posted it - I'll start my manga-reading with those titles then. :)

(as soon as I've finished my now-forever on-going one - Eyeshield 21)

Is it the top four?

And I know some of these shows I listed are there because of a sort of bias towards music and such. Gantz and Air Gear more obviously the examples.

And what about your list? :) (sorry if you've posted something like this before, I don't remember at this point - and, it's nice to re-read this kind of stuff nontheless)

^^ What I've seen from that list, I've liked.

With the possible exception of One Piece and Eureka Seven - though I've really not given them enough effort.

Goku is a friend of all living things, even according to the TV Tropes website.

Goku only beats the badguys up and even when he kicked the badguy's ass he often refuses to kill them. Goku is pretty much against killing. That makes him a Friend of All Living Things.

Gon is also a Friend of All Living things for the very same reason as Goku, with a small exception here and there.

Well the top 5 was actually about anime series, not anime movies.

My top 5 anime movies would look completely different.

My top 5 anime movies:

1. Ghost in The Shell
2. Steamboy
3. Akira
4. Howl's Moving Castle
5. Grave of the Fireflies

Anime that didn't make my top 5 but also deserve to be noted: Spirited Away, Laputa Castle in The Sky and Tales from Earthsea.

Fun Fact: I usually watch all of my anime in Japanese with English subs, but for Steamboy I actually prefered the English dub over the Japanese dub. The English voices with the typical brittain accents fit the Steamboy setting so much better (after all, the story takes place in the UK).

Again if TV Tropes says something it must be true right?

Hell all TV Tropes says on their "Friend to All Living Things" page is that Goku is one in a random movie that no one cares about because it's just Toei filler.

And then they say something about his speech to Freeza, my guess is they are talking about the dub speech, because that version is the only thing that they could mean. So yeah TV Tropes is full of it.

Also once more Goku just wants to fight the badguys again because he loves to fight, nothing to it but that.

So he really is not that much like Gon.

@eroerru You should try the One Piece manga like I keep telling you to do, but if you want high class art you should go for reading my top 5 list soon.

I am going to link the Daicon opening video now:

Gainax made these for a scifi convention, basically their first-ever animation. I like the later one better, it has Batman.
