There seems to be some misconceptions about the Berserker fight...

 

Saber did not use Excalibur, nor did she slice Berserker with Excalibur without Invisible Air. She used Invisible Air. Invisible Air is the wind around the sword that she can release into a blast, that blast however is Rank C, it is not the Excalibur blast so it is imposable for that to even harm Berserker. Even before the graveyard Saber was kicking his ass yet in the VN before she got to the graveyard she was getting her ass kicked on par with the fight in Fate and HF route, she was only able to get to the graveyard thanks to Archers support who was firing uncharged Hrunting arrows. Even at the graveyard Saber was still having issues, that is why Illya was amazed when Archer took one of Berserkers lifes with Caladbolg II which is an extremely powerful A rank attack that causes a massive explosion. However because Saber somehow was able to kill Berserker with Invisible Air, Archers attack is made pointless in UBW(2014) along with Illyas fascination. Saber became the star of that fight instead of Archer.

 

Saber is also alot more cold in UBW then she is in Zero, yet in UBW(2014) Ufotable portrays her exactly as she was in Zero with hardly any of her coldness and making her an innocent Lilly who is a victim.

Saber: Shirou, let Taiga go.

Saber outright tells Shirou to let Taiga die in the VN. That small line changes the atmosphere of the hostage scene big time and changes Saber from the tragic victim to a agitator. In the VN Shirou was the true victim at this part as Taigas life was on the line and his own ally outright supported letting her die, which caused him even more pain. This was omitted from UBW(2014) for clear reasons, Ufotable wanted Saber to be the victim. I can understand why anime only watchers at first bash Shirou for this scene only to talk with Vn readers and pay more attention to the scene to see who was truly in the wrong because Ufotable tried too hard to make Saber look the victim and make Shirou look like the "villain"

Ok, I'm finally going to ask this. It's not particularly related to this. But I have been meaning to ask this, and this seems like the best time. (It's about Archer so there's legit spoilers here. Read at your own risk)

From what you've explained, the age of the legend dictates how strong a heroic spirit should be right? That's why Gil is the strongest heroic spirit. He's from the first epic poem.

I get he was a powerful warrior when he was alive, but he's also future Shirou. So that means technically he's the youngest spirit, and by proxy the weakest right?

But he's seems fairly capable regardless, how does that make any sense?

I mean say what you will about other Power Level discussions, least I have actual numbers and constant factors to work with normally.

There's just no consistency I've seen with Fate as a whole.

There's just no consistency I've seen with Fate as a whole.

Battles in the Fate universe are situational.

 

The abilities and strength from a servant aren't just based on how old they are.

To be fair though, I found Saber in UBW to be more distant than her counterpart in Zero. This is both a pro and a con, since on the former case it is understandable due to the events that transpired in Zero and perfectly in character for her not associating much and circumventing around Shirou. However on the latter, it makes her too absent-minded and remote from the story, especially in terms of giving her proper characterization. While she does portray an aura of benevolence towards Shirou, her initial introduction is quite cold and guarded.

 

I didn't get that far into the UBW VN before I dropped it, but I got a few days in to notice that Saber is quite side lined and remains largely the same in the very first few days, while in the anime version she has shown some developments quite early on. Also replacing Sakura and her dialog about Kiritsugu with Saber instead asking the question was a change I favored and worked better in the anime's case.

 

Well I haven't finished the VN, so this is simply my personal views on it.

Interesting. I have to agree, this turn of events would have been a lot more stronger, especially regarding Saber's positions. This would also have made Saber more pro-active during the incident. Well a shame.

Seems to me that instead of old = win it's more that "age" is one thing that goes into their favor but a battle is always decided on multiple grounds so one need to take into account so many other things and to top it all, there's always a bit of randomness in battles. 

 

Makes the fights if anything less predictable and I do prefer the chance of an upset even if it may be small.

Archer came into contact with every NP in the holy grail war. that includes a almost 50% of the blades Gil had in his vault(he can also project Exaclibur but it would kill him if he did which is why he won't do it and he can not project Ea because it's materiel are 100% alien to him) when he was Shirou, he also came into contact with ALOT of other noble phantasm and conceptual weapons when he became a "hero of justice" as he worked closely with the Church. He is also able to create his own weapons because of his UBW, and he has a crap load of unique tracing techniques that he has applied to all of his most powerful weapons. He also trained with Saber back during the war so his instincts have been sharped big time. You could in fact call him a modern Gil as he has collected over thousands of weapons and ideas, he however does not need to own them thanks to UBW and his unique form of projection. To give you some examples.

 

There's also his armor. Because he worked closely with the Church, Ciel gave him the holy shroud as a gift and the armor he wears is created from materiel that will be made in the future. That does add to his defenses and he has the Eyes of mind skill which in short is a very high danger avoidance ability that he gained because of the crap he went through during the grail war and his hero of justice days in his life.

 

Another key thing is his Origin is Sword. When it comes melee weapons, Archer and by extension Shirou can easily master it's concept and use(not that it makes him a master swordmans, more he can use weapons and project weapons with little training because that is what both of them are geared towards.

Yes, I find GITS to be extremely boring as a franchise. Everything about it puts me to sleep. Now, I'm not saying it's bad but it easily puts me to sleep to the point that I haven't finished Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (even though it's the best part of GITS).
