Yeah, considering the stuff I know about Nero I'll stick with Arturia. They did it on purpose to trick people into thinking it was the same Saber so when people picked to have her as their servant in Fate/Extra(you have a choice) you would be expecting the Saber from SN only to be surprised by a haughty, egotistical and materialistic emperor.
She also bitches about Arturia in the game too.
There are only three characters in the Fate/ verse that I genuinely like, which would be Kiritsugu, Saber and Rin.
The rest I either dislike, feel indifferent about, or not in a position to make a full judgement yet (Archer, Kirei, Gilgamesh, Illya, and basically the entire Stay Night cast).
Iri, Waver and Rider are the only Zero unique characters I personally like.
Rider ;_;
I've never really bothered to think about it but yeah the FZ unique characters didn't really manage to impress me.
Well besides Waver and Rider.
Those two are cool in my book.
I am actually quite fascinated now about hearing who Fate Extra Saber is and how she is portrayed, considering the historical figure has been quite heavily mistreated and his deeds widely exaggerated.
He was certainly terrible, but not as bad as people like to visualize him, and many of his good deeds are simply ignored. Hopefully Extra does him justice.

That's very often the case with historical characters. "Good" people get their better traits exaggerated and more problematic people are somehow closer to being devils than humans

This is in fact brought up later in the game. Even she feels that people overlooked the good things she did and just focus on her mistakes which pisses her off.
Really, considering how Fate/Zero treated Lovecraft it's not like they're the most accurate when it comes to how they portray this stuff.
The Necromomicon summoning Cthulhu. What a joke.
I'm sure I haven't gotten the full story with Nero. But what I've read about him makes him sound like a genocidal maniac that needs to step away from the horses.

Um considering the fact that if you dig deep enough you will see the public loved him but officels hating him, Nero is a classic case of the victor writing history. Yes Nero made mistakes, he still did good and that should not be ignored. It's no different then Arthur losing every single knight he had and having little to no allies at his death because of stupid decisions.

If that's your view.. then it's an understatement on a momentous scale that you don't have the full story

Pretty much, and in this case, he was unlucky with most writings surrounding him being recorded by Tacitus, who apparently held a biased opinion on him (even qualities that would be considered good he wrote as being bad) and Christians who despised him (for obvious reasons of course, but could have easily influenced them).
Anyway, little to no sources exists on his most brutal acts and it is easy to take it all in face value.
Still prefer SN Saber, but yes Extra Saber and Mo-chan are based as hell!
Archer I assume b/c of his philosophical rant in UBW? Well no worries, wait till next season arrives (which is very soon!)
Nah.
Archer is the character in SN who fascinates me the most in the story, but that particular scene with Shirou and Saber irritates me b/c the impression I get from Archer is that he is quite intellectual and concise--he knows what to do, how to do it in the most effective manner, is accurate with his remarks and doesn't bother with unnecessary talk (ignoring the fact when he is in his snark mode).
So for this guy to suddenly open up and go into a minute speech about a simple concept that he can can explain with a single sentence and go into a philosophical rant, feels very out of place for me, unnecessary and unimpressive.
I view Archer in high regard, but I am keeping the my "distance" in terms of character appreciation. I had a similar approach to Kiritsugu, who I didn't particularly like that much but ultimately fell in love with him in the episode finale, and how it all came together with his "character arc". So I am expecting the same treatment with Archer.

I'm sure. But the persecution of Christianity was still a thing at that time.
Maybe not entirely Nero's fault. But it was still a thing.

Very well said. Nero suffer from having most of his records written by someone that despised him more than anything on this Earth and that's hardly a source to be trusted.
Nero is a very problematic and likely not the nicest person ever but his history is so full of holes and inconsistencies that it's quite depressing

Ah you'll see why Archer did that long convo, I can't say why but you'll see why he is extremely harsh on both Saber and Shirou and why he draws out his conversations, he does it on purpose. He knows he could just do it in one sentence but he does not and you'll see why.

And Fate delivers!
God, I love this franchise!

To be honest, Fate is quite accurate with its portrayal on history. E.g. Gilgamesh is pretty much taken directly from the Poem, Rider is probably one of my favorite depictions of Alexander b/c while it is bombastic, it is in fact very true to the source material (Alexander as a historical figure is quite exaggerated, and his more "unfavorable" attributes and characteristics are ignored or downplayed). Rider is basically what a lot of historians believe is how Alexander behaved, especially during his later years (since he suffered from megalomania that had a great influence on him).
Of course it isn't perfect (they play with the Arthur legend more than simply a gender swap), but I lift my hat to Fate doing quite an original, interesting and largely accurate take on their characters.

This puts me at ease.
Thanks, Senpai!

They did so well with their potrayal of Alexander that when I now think of him.. it's their depictions of him as Rider that comes to mind first. They completely nailed the exaggerated "I'm flippin awesome" aura that he carried with him.
Keep this up Fate, making historical characters treated with respect is something I can never have enough off

Sim, you don't comment on based Kirei images ()?

Don't forget how acurate Gilles de Rais was portrayed.
Except for the part where he raped young boys, but I can understand why they couldn't include something like that in the anime.
The fact is this, majority heroes, legends and famous leaders all made mistakes and all met a bad end. Not all heroes and such went out in a blaze of glory like Cu did, some like Jeane, Siegfried, Arthur ect had a crappy end.

Unfortunately my knowledge on Rais is superficial at best, so can't comment much on that. But I did like how he complemented Ryuunosuske (or however you spell it) with his pious views and murderous nature. Even though they are the worst duo in the show, they are hardly terrible characters each and I like how they work as a "catalyst" of sorts within the narrative to portray the worst case scenario of contenders in the Grail War.
Yeah, Zero is one of my favorite anime for a reason. They get so many things right on so many levels.

Oh just wait till the second half of UBW(Caster does even further damage) and HF. What some people have plotted and set into motion makes Bluebeards stunt a little game.
