I'm enjoying it rather unironically tbh.

I just don't really mind him being a douche.

Me and my douche tolerance is putting me at odds with you guys increasingly often tho.

 

I'm less concerned with him being a douche and more so that he keeps claiming it's for the princess.

His actions alone would be fine if his reasoning wasn't so bad is what I'm saying.

 

What I'm trying to understand in what way exactly are his actions going to make her happy? How does that little puzzle piece fit in his head?

 

I want to like the guy, I really do because I live and breathe on grey characters, but I'm trying far harder then I should X3

I'm saying in terms of me accepting the character. I'm fine with characters in fiction that do terrible things when I can at least understand their reasoning for it (Example: Griffith)

First goal was to gain power to protect her, regardless of how much he had to violate her principles to do so. Straight-forward.

Second was to make her happy, made doubly hard by goal #1. Practically impossible, decided he may as well salvage it by giving her the world she wants regardless of what she thinks of the methods he uses to get there. Doesn't matter if she hates him for it as long as he can give her that result.

"Winning her heart" barely factors into it at this point.

And yet he keeps talking about making her happy. How long can he protect her for? What does he think will happen when she does recover? She didn't want world domination, she wanted peace. Giving her the world she wants  and going to war with Terrans to take over the world seems like an awfully disingenuous view of what she wanted.

 

How did protecting the count originally factor into all of this? The same count who admitted his goal was to kill her beforehand. The same count he killed for actually trying to go through with it (the 2nd time I might add)?

 

I'm not looking for something profound. I'm looking for some shred of logic which he sincerely seems to lack.

Not so much disingenuous as the only thing he feels he can do. Some of this is from the last episode so we're not exactly on the same page to start with.

He's not really the brightest idiot, but he also blames Inaho for putting the princess in danger/trying to manipulate her etc. That's why he keeps trying to kill Inaho and protected the count that one time. Since he didn't know who to trust at that time, or whatever. Yeah, it's stupid.

I don't think it's going to fit into this 'grey' box you want it to. He's just a stupid teenager who has way too much power. It's a common trope, and they usually aren't Griffiths or Xanatos in implementation... as one might expect of a stupid teenager.

Not trusting Inaho is one thing, but the count made his intentions to kill her absurdly obvious, and actively saving him was a terrible decision.

 

I would argue he is in fact a grey character, they come in all different types after all, he's just not one I find myself being drawn to like I typically am, and I'm trying. Again it comes due to trying to connect his motivations to what he claims he wants.

If he wants to create a better world then fine, but he's not going to make her happy and he damn well knows it which is why he's so scared for her to discover the truth.

As far as terrible decisions and not making her happy... like I said, I fail to see the problem with it, as far as accepting him as a character goes. I suppose they were going for tragedy. YMMV whether applying such a label is utterly laughable or not.

 

*shrugs* we disagree on the grey part but ah well, just a difference in what we consider a grey character I suppose.

 

I'll agree on them going for him being a tragic character at least.
