Ok, so a group called Aimer is doing the opening for Season 2, and Kalafina is doing the ending for UBW.

Aimer did an okay job with Gundam Unicorn.

Closing in on finishing up Utena. Got 5 episodes left and might just watch it and write a very small summary. It's been a rather unique watch so far and hopefully the show can end it a bit better than the last couple of episodes have been.

Done with Utena and it's a very special show. Will mention that it got a fantastic OST with a few tracks that get played often and has such good quality that they get rather memorable in which the OP has suddenly started playing in my head during random moments during the day. It's very catchy!

The art really fit the kind of story the show want to tell and while the show don't have the best of animations they're rather unimportant and quickly get overshadowed by the things the show do well. The show got a very clever story and got hidden gems in every corner and while I can't say I understood them all I did understand enough and I will research a bit on the rest. Within the show there exist well written characters and I got to learn about them through different ways and the ways was not always direct. There are easily things about them that research can clarify or show in a different light but they were a rather weird bunch.

 

Utena is a show that wouldn't work for a viewer unless they had a liking to stories that got hidden meanings and talk a lot that could be seen as nonsense without some explanation and research. It was an interesting experience!

 

 

The show did showcase some very special sibling relationships which is possibly the thing that entertained me the most for large parts of the show

DragonBall Z: A Review (I'm not too good at these)

Opening Statements:

Dragonball Z is one of the most well known anime series to the common public. This along with Sailor Moon and Pokemon can be seen as the start of the early 2000s anime boom in the west thanks to their showcase on Toonami.

So anyway, I took it upon myself to watch DBZ because I didn't have anything better to do really, and hey Resurrection of F comes out next month (And getting its English dub in the Summer), so what the hell right?

I kept it to strictly canon material, so the Garlic Jr Saga and Movies aside from Battle of Gods were Omitted.

I watched the Uncut Funimation Dub with US Broadcast Music.

The Marathon began Monday, March 9th 2015th at 8:30 PM and ended on Sunday March 15th 2015 at 4:00 PM.

So let's begin.

 

The Saiyan Saga

The Saiyan Saga is probably the best paced and shortest of the main sagas.

It's 36 episodes, and every episode has something important happening. And while it shares the common problem where, when the fights start, the secondary cast just stop being useful and watch the fights.

But I give this saga credit for having the human fighters (and whatever the **** Chiaotsu is supposed to be) a chance to at least give it a try.

 

This saga, of course, introduces the concept of Gokus alien race, the Saiyans. And from there countless parallels to Superman that I couldn't ignore. It also introduces the characters of Gohan, Vegeta, and King Kai. All of which became important in various ways for the rest of the series.

 

The fights against the Saibamen, Nappa, and Vegeta were well handled, as it manages to keep the stakes high, and the tension thick as they slow die waiting for Goku to get there.

And ultimately, leads up to a great rival bout between Goku and Vegeta.

 

Outside of the action, most of the Saga revolves around training for the arrival of the Saiyans, Gohans Journey back home simultaneously learning how to fend for himself, and Gokus run down Snake Way to receive Training for King Kai.

 

The Saiyan Saga is a strong start for the series. I feel it was well done, and had moments where most of the cast have their moments to shine, be it action or comedy. Overall pretty good.

Special: Bardock, The Father of Goku

It was a treat to watch this one again. The story of Bardock is fantastic.

As it's about a man who was too late to save anything in his life, while his psychic powers constantly mocked him about it.

To late to save his friends, to see his Son one last time, and to ultimately save his planet or himself (What SSJ Bardock Special? You make that up?).

 

It includes one of my favorite fights in the series set to my favorite music track.

In general it manages to have great character development, and show the tragedy of a man who found redemption for the horrific acts he committed for a sadistic tyrant before his death. Along with being well acted and scored. This is my favorite thing to come out of Dragonball.

 

Until DB Minus came out and turned Bardock into Jor-El.

**** you Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. You ruined everything. Hope you get killed off in Resurrection of F.

The Namek and Ginyu Sagas

As I've made it perfectly clear, I skipped the first part of the Namek saga, because it is so boring.

The entire escapade on the Fake Namek accomplishes ****** nothing, other than to pad out the episode counter.

 

However, once Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin make it to Real Namek, things pick up, introducing the villain Frieza, one of the better DBZ villains because of his connection to the main characters past, and his general presence and attitude.

 

It's also here where Vegeta goes on his badass rampage, killing Cui, Dodoria, and a whole village of Namekians. Before getting beaten to a pulp by Zarbon,

Then killing Zarbon later.

 

Other characters like Nail, Dende, and Guru are also introduced.

Who don't really do that much aside from Dende. But Guru starts off the annoying trend of Gohans "Secret" Powers being unleashed...sigh. 

Ultimatley the saga picks up, but the awful first section can't be ignored.

 

The Ginyu Saga however, is only slightly better. The Ginyu force are an entertaining bunch just for how batshit insane they are. Friezas reactions to them are, however, priceless.

The problem is though, Bulma's whining which never stops...ever. Apparently the Ginyu force can't kill enemies in a more timely fashion.

So it's mostly just Recoome taking his sweet ass time Recoome kicking them over like 5 episodes, before Goku shows up and shows them the business.

Then it picks up a bit more, what with the whole body switching thing and that.

The fights are pretty decent. But meh.

The Frieza Saga

This is the saga where Arc Fatigue started settling in heavy for me.

The whole saga, is a fight. Just the main characters (Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, and later Piccolo and Goku) fighting Frieza. All while cutting back to Bulma ****** around with the Ginyu Frog. Because lord knows we needed that.

 

It's not very well paced. The infamous joke is Frieza says it'll take 5 minutes for Namek to explode, but it really takes several episodes is true.

 

But there is a light at the end of this tunnel. The Super Saiyan transformation, and with one sequence the entire series changed forever.

 

So it gets points for that, and while I like Frieza as a villain, it just went on too long.

Special: History of Trunks

Ok, another good special.
So we go into the future. 20 years to be precise. To the post apocalyptic world, where Goku dies of heart failure, and the Z Fighters were all killed by two Androids.

The special focuses on Vegeta and Bulmas kid Trunks.

The true starter for the OC template if we're being honest.

 

But for now, the special shows the friendship that forms between Gohan and Trunks, before Gohan is brutally murdered.

But all in all, is very well done, it's scored fairly well, action is solid, and has a good amount of emotion to it.

The Android Saga

Fun fact about me. I don't much care for villains that brag about how great they are. So it's nice when they get smacked down like Dr. Gero.

So, Cyborg Frieza shows up. Trunks kills him. And warns Goku and Friends about incoming killer death robots.

So everyone goes off to train, and drive cars.

 

This one is a good refresher from how overly long the Frieza saga was.

Killer robots, and badass one-liners are ways to get on my good side.

So seeing as those are both here, I'd say this was a good one.

The interactions between Androids 16,17, and 18 are entertaining.

And the fights are pretty good, and brutal.

The Cell Saga

The Cell saga is ok.

 

Cell himself is a decent villain, if a bit generic. But I can see what they were going for. He's basically Gokus ultimate arch nemesis. A dark reflection that's all of Gokus worst qualities turned against him, so it makes sense that Goku isn't the one that beats him.

Nope it's Gohan with Secret Power awakening number TWO! Where he goes SSJ2 and yeah, kills Cell.

 

Thing about this Saga is that it's another long one. It's actually 3 sagas, which it isn't that bad. Has some decent fights, and Cell playing to the characters psychological weaknesses. Which is a plus.

 

The character development for Gohan and Vegeta in this saga is probably the best. Gohan learning to man up, and Vegeta to accept living with his family

 

The saga has a good conclusion. And if it was intended to be the end of the series like the internet assumes. Would've been good.

The Buu Saga

This saga is over 90 episodes long.

OH GOD WHY!?

 

So anyway, this one starts off strong, a fun series of episodes where Gohan becomes the super hero. GREAT SAIYAMAN!

His identity is found out almost immediately.

So he has to go attend the world tournament, with the other characters.

And it's all fun and good.

 

Then Supreme Kai shows up and ruins everything.

 

From there on comes the long cycle of constant failure.

The Pinnacle is Gotenks.

The result when you leave the fate of the world in the hands of two stupid kids.

He does nothing but waste time and doesn't try to take out Buu because it's not "Fantastic" enough.

The worst.

 

So basically, lots of staring, talking, some fights, and heavy arc fatigue.

 

Leading up to Goku killing Buu.

 

Then it cuts years later. Uub shows up and Goku takes him off to train the next Earth savior.

Because let's face it. Can't trust Gotenks to do anything right.

 

I'm gonna be honest. I just wanted this one to end. Doesn't help I hate Gotenks and find the Kais completely worthless.

But it just kept going, like a bored Energizer Bunny.

 

Buu himself isn't that great a villain, he just shows up, and doesn't have any kind of connection to the main characters like the previous villains. He's just...there.

 

So all in all, wasn't a fan of this one

Special: Yo! The Return of Son Goku and Friends

Yes. This is canon.

 

This one was fun, short too.

It's basically just a little adventure, that unfortunately has more Gotenks. But he gets his ass kicked so it's fine.

 

But not really alot to say about this one.

Vegeta has a brother.

Who knew?

Movie: Battle of Gods

This movie is decent.

Has a strange mythology, and the SSJ God thing makes the SSJ forms even more confusing. But it was ok.

 

The animation is solid in this one, the fights are pretty entertaining.

 

But a big thing I want to mention is the Dub. Everyone is on their A-Game for this one, and it's fantastic.

Sean Schemmel in particular was great as Goku.

 

And Lord Beerus is a great new addition to the cast.

 

So yeah. Check this one out if you get the chance.

 

In closing DBZ is ok. Not anywhere close to the best anime I've seen though.

The slow pace and volume of episodes leaves alot to be desired. But from what I've head Kai handles that problem better.

The characters are good. Just not all that dynamic, For example, Gohan has like 3 power awakenings (Guru, SSJ2, and Mystic) but there's nothing more to his story than that.

And Vegetas arcs pretty much are "Stop being a dick" on repeat.

Other than that. The strongest arc goes to Piccolo in the first saga, which is genuinely good. But after he fuses with Kami he doesn't really get to do anything other than rightfully yell at Goten and Trunks for being brain dead morons.

 

Falconers music rocks.

 

So yeah, my summed up opinion on DBZ can be described best as.

Yeah, pretty good I guess.

 

But I'm sure as hell never doing something like this again. Took way too much out of me.
