There is Rin: Daughters of mnemosyne.
It has quite some yuri stuff in it and the story is quite interesting. Not your average anime.
But you'll just have to see for yourself if it interests you or not.

In some respects, I guess that my issue with anime is pretty much the same with any traditional American media, be it literature or television. It's just there's not a lot of LGBT protagonists or shows of good quality. Granted, I've seen the L part of the acronym addressed in anime before many times, but not necessarily the G portion, which I obviously resonate with more.
SSY handles it pretty well, but it's not really the focus as in, homosexuality is really just there to build the world more and how their society works.
And no, it's not the same ol' "homosexuals are people" tripe where a couple is prosecuted and somebody calls on their bullsh*t.
It's actually really refreshing.

Given how much I'm liking it, I probably will read it. Been a while since I've read manga too but I feel like picking up an old hobby of mine.
Another favorite character of mine is Dr. Franken Stein. So sadistic I love it.

I don't know to what depth or if it'll show anything or not. You might be better off waiting and asking Isi if has any good scenes or not.
It's funny (and stupid, and annoying) because a lot of people got upset over it. I've heard several people comment they felt they should have been warned that it would happen beforehand so I often like to joke around by saying the episode should begin with:
WARNING: the following episode contains copious amounts of gay. Watch at your own risk/pleasure
Personally I think it's a completely ludicrous complaint. As if people need to be warned X3 I've never heard that kind of bitching over straight couples.
All in all it's a fantastic anime though. One of my all time favorites.
