Kinda funny how Rin became a much stronger mage under Kotomine's teachings then she would have under her father,  oh how she would weep if she found out her father was just a second rate mage who just bs.

Funny enough, Rin learned more from Kotomine then she did from her father. Nasu stated that had her father still been around she would have been vastly different in SN.

 

It's why Rin has no issues resorting to underhanded tactics and trickery in SN, that is Kotomines small influence. She was also taught some martial arts from him too

 

And yet seems to have zero respect for the dude.

Wasn't Tokiomi quite knowledgeable as a magus, but possessed little talent in being able to actually perform them? I recall reading somewhere he was respected on that level at least.

Yes, his knowledge was very good, that's why he does appear to be a first rate mage, but people who know him personally know that when it comes to practical use, he is just not that strong. Rin has already surpassed him at spellcasting and performance in SN, same with Sakura.

To be fair though, it's not like he's been exactly forthcoming about everything with her either.

He also  gave away most of her fortune to branch families on purpose to teach her the lesson of poverty as she grew up(hence why she is stingy now)
