I don't think it's dated.Some Geth wrote...
I don't like the movie one that much, it is both dated and suffers dramatically by comparison to the manga. I can't take it seriously in the first place. The worst part is Kushana, it's bad enough that she's such a weak comparison to the manga her, but her character here is dumb to begin with. I mean what the f*ck? She had a grudge against bugs?? Nauiscaa herself is boring as well. She's too perfect and innocent. Where's the Nausicaa that commands the God Warrior to murder an organic structure god thing after having a last supper with her worm handler disciples who she sort of lies to in telling them to pass down her messiah like wisdom of dooming the human race to certain extinction to avoid spiraling down the path of insane hubristic self-mutation. Also Namulith is not in it lol. Frankly they aren't even related since they share virtually different everything but appearance.Megaton_Hope wrote...
Nausicaa is really very good. A little weird. I think the animated version captures the written one better than Akira does. Certainly better than Appleseed ever has.
Now, Dominion Tank Police, THAT'S dated. (Although ironically, the old one is more watchable than "New Dominion.")
Or Dirty Pair, that's pretty dated.

But how do you feel about missing out on some shows, due to bad voice acting?
Like Neon Genesis Evangelion for example. I would never be able to withstand the whining of Shinji in the dub. xD

And then you have the fact that Shinji is "whining" in both Japanese and English, so both voice actors did get it right.
Translation is an art that most people do get wrong, from dubbing to subbing you can never get a perfect translation. BUT! you can get it close if you know what the original was going for like Shinji's "whining", also knowing Japanese can help.
I also think people who say subs are too "fast" are funny.

That in itself wouldn't be SO bad, if the dub would be done well. In NGE, it is NOT well done, even you must agree on that.
And it's a helluva lot of anime's that have horrible dubs (Dragon Ball comes to mind... and many more). SO my question was rather that will he forsake those shows, or try them in subs.

Anyway, western dubbers are nothing, compared to Japanese VA's.
Besides, it's good for your reading skills to read subs, and you can easily make it quick enough that you read it in a moment, and get to see all that's going on. Hearing dubs degrades the quality (always), and doesn't give you any progress in anything... neither in learning Japanese, or reading.

To the Japanese, Shinji's whining is annoying whining, just like in the dub.
Now that is not to say which voice actor is better because I do think Ogata is better but Spencer did get what they were going for with Shinji's character.
What about the Rebuild movies? they have great dubs but they still have Shinji's dub voice actor in them.
And it is kind of arrogant to say western dubbers(I guess you mean voice actors?) are nothing, compared to Japanese voice actors. Or that hearing dubs degrades the quality.

Yeah I don't get that, unless the original is somehow really bad.eroeru wrote...
Yup, it's kinda arrogant, and a bit of an overstatement.

And since we were just talking about Eva's dub I feel the need to post this.
Also the "congratulations" part really does show the worst of the dub, was the small side-characters.
Still Spike's rant always gets me.

And it's actually not so bad. I guess it got quirkier and unnatural-like more in the battle-scenes, intimate scenes and such.
But that part before the rant was really pretty decent, save one or another secondary character.

Yeah that's the thing about the dub in my view, it gets better as you go along. Then by The End of Evangelion you could even say it's a good dub.eroeru wrote...
^^ Damn that's hilarious. (YYY)

And when Funimation took over the dubbing with the Rebuild moves, Eva got a great dub for the first time. Shinji and Misato were great even if they still had the same voice actors from the old dub.
Makes me wonder when they get up to Asuka, if they will get Tiffany Grant back since she does work a lot with Funimation.

But about dubs - maybe it's a bit of a cultural thing. Where I live, the very lively american dub usually sounds very unintelligent-like, whilst the Japanese have more restraint in their voice-acting. But the restraint and hidden colors in the voice is absolutely a plus, no matter how much cultural implications play a role.

I do think that English dubs have been improving by leaps and bounds lately. In the olden days, you couldn't find an English dub worth watching, ever. Cowboy Bebop kinda broke the mold there, only Edward was actually painfully annoying to listen to. And that's kind of in-character anyway.

Not only was she made for the role but her German was much better than Miyamura's and somehow even better than Asuka's German voice actor. Then again German voice actors are very meh to me and Germans, believe it or not.eroeru wrote...
Yup, Tiffany Grant is made for Asuka (or is it the other way around?), as far as I've heard.

Yeah it can be a cultual thing, but some other stuff plays into it as well. So that's why something like Funimation makes their dub directors and writers watch every episode of whatever show they want to dub or are already dubbing.
So they never get something wrong again, like they did with Dragon Ball.

Shinji's supposed to be hysterical when he's whining, on account of how most of the time he behaves as if his emotions were dead to cover up for his years of social isolation and neglect.

Yeah, but in the dub I don't get the hysterical thing behind it. Whining is a lot different than personal struggles - but in the dub they don't seem as struggles, only as some meaningless bull**** whining.
But about anime in general - is it only me or are 3-minute animes getting a lot more popular? Like 5 years ago there weren't any, yet now there's a lot of those. When do they show them, anyway? Like in a specific hour where there's a bunch of these, or...?

Are you set on finding out about the most horrendous pieces of garbage in anime history? Or are you just a tiny bit interested in these shows?
I for one quickly put those previous "recommendations" on my watching list. Hahaa...

Mainly because it's hilarious to watch with a couple of friends and analyze just why they suck so much.
It will also make whatever I watch next seem amazing in comparison.
(and I'll get a lower average score on MAL
Garzey's Wing
Saishuu Shiken Kujira
The Laws of Eternity
Smash Hit
Love Love?
Koi Koi 7
Run=Dim
With You: Mitsumeteitai
Lovedol: Lovely Idol
Blue Flames
Angel Links
Ninja Resurrection
Have these babes left and really (not) looking forward to it!

I've decided that THE WORST anime is Initial D. Picked it up at a video store once because it was cheap. Horrible. Street racing seemed like a good premise for a show, but...no.
Been reading the Nausicaa manga again, because I had forgotten the characters referred to above. It's one of those ones that's full of political machinations and intrigue - these are things that are difficult to convey in a feature film or less worth of time. That's why Akira makes so little sense - compressed six volumes of manga into a couple hours of cartoon.

Armada was halfway watchable, but pretty crappy. The one that came immediately after it, with the "Terrorcons," was just garbage. Haven't improved since.
