Ghost in the Shell is a good choice.

But you should watch the Aria series. Aria the Animation, Aria the Natural and Aria the Origination. Or read the manga (early chapters are under the name "Aqua" instead of "Aria"). Or both. If you read the manga, do it while listening to the anime's soundtrack.

Y'all need to watch/read Aria. Now. Go.

I've heard only good things.

But this Aria: “The series has been praised for its calm pacing, optimistic worldview, beautiful art, and, for the anime, the quality of the soundtrack.",

Yeah that's not dark gritty deep enough for me. Though I may grant it the honor of my views, if only to laugh at how infantile it must be.

Does anyone have some decent anime they would recommend? I'm watching Stein's Gate just now and am thinking of watching Baccano, Ghost in the Shell and Fate/Zero.

Also has Naruto seriously not ended yet?

I'm also watching Steins;Gate. Very interesting and the characters are great. Based on what you're watching, I'd also recommend:

Ga-Rei: Zero
Mirai Nikki
Shiki
Soul Eater

Can someone check out my list and give me some suggestions on some shows that I might've missed?

Hanar,

Clannad and Kanon.
For all of you who've asked lately!

Also, and more obviously, EVA...

+ I'm surprised as to how few have seen Katanagatari and Tatami Galaxy!

If you give it an honest shot, and watch it from start to finish, I'm willing to bet that it will completely melt away your cynicism and preconceptions. :P

I've watched Soul Eater, and I recall Mirai Nikki having a good soundtrack, but I haven't seen the other two. I'll try them out.

When you say EVA are you referring to Evangelion?

Maybe he meant ethylene vinyl acetate? Given his avatar though (and Wikipedia) I'd assume Evangelion. BTW wouldn't it be NGE? Why EVA?

It's sometimes called eva, sometimes evangelion, sometimes nge, sometimes Neon Genesis Evangelion. A matter of preference.

It's just that I didn't see it on you list, The Maddo Hanar..

edit: in many languages Eva is Eve (as in Adam and Eve). Kinda fits the mythos.
(in the show the things that are pilored are referred to as EVAs. And they're... well... EVAs)

Ill check that out too, I've heard of it before and it sounds like a polarizing show. People either love it or hate it in my experience.

Yup. It's polarizing. Yet amazin if you know what's post-modernism, existentialist philosophy and get some jungian/freudian and biblical references with knowing what to laugh at and what to be mind-****ed or simply amazed about...

Nice list! Don't agree with some of the "trash" and "10" ones (though rating any show well doesn't seem bad really), but I did get a few more shows to watch, and that's ultimately the best thing about lists.

Should make a list of my own sooner rather than later. Kinda tried a few years back, though was frustrated with all the rating and listing of it.

Ehh the only one I rated lowly I think someone would have trouble with are like some of the ones like say SE Lain and such, I rate lowly as frankly I don't like the way the story plays out, such as time skips, or theoretical plots, if I can't make sense of it, then I won't bother with it. However if it has some good parts to it even if I don't like it, I will give it a 6 as to say "Meh you might like it, I didn't."

I might change my 10's to 9's as I said I don't find anyshows that good, hell I can't even rank games with a 10 for the most. !0's are perfections of that time. Like say OoT on the 64 I can give it a ten, given it was pretty much one of the, if not the best games on that system. Had a great style, great controls. However its rerelease on the GC I can only give an 8 maybe a 9 as frankly it sucked with the GC controller.

As to my Tens,

FMA Brotherhood I found to be MUUUCH better than FMA, dispite it being so long and at times boring I managed to finish it.

Akira. It gets a 10 as it STILL even after all these years matches up in terms of quality with most of whats out there, and was my first anime.

Fist of the North Star: One of the first shows to prove anime can run for a long time and not be mistaken as a kids show.

And lastly Getbackers, the first show I watched once I got back into anime that I really enjoyed. Though as I said almost all of those are more worth 9's. As frankly nothings perfect, though maybe I should rethink my raitings oh well.

And yeah that is the best thing about these lists, things to watch lol. Meh I'm up to suggestions all the time in anycase.

Off the top of my head.
Read or Die the OVA and the TV series, Eden of the East the TV series and both movies, the Universal Century Gundam shows, and both of the Fullmetal Alchemist shows.

Here's my list http://myanimelist.n...ist/soultaker65 the 10s, 9s, and 8s are my recommendation.

IMO Naruto has about 100 chapters left, so it should end 2 years from now.

So I made one of those lists too a little while ago. Feels like I've watched more than that, but I guess not. At least, not counting all the shows I watched occasionally on TV (but couldn't name which episodes or how many of them I watched), like Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, various Tenchi Muyos and Gundams, etc...

My list of anime to watch is pretty huge though... and that's just One Piece, must less all the rest of the shows on my list. But, yea, I'm open to comments, suggestions, outrage at what I've watched or how I've rated it, etc.

Okay. I just finished up to episode 12 of Steins;Gate.......ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

I'll probably watch the rest tomorrow. I can't watch any more tonight after that episode (and I'm too tired to read subs). But gawd fawking dammit....

ALSO, if anyone's interested in seeing what a real man's list looks like....

I know all of those things and I still think it's barely average overblown flick with fake symbolism.

Long story short, anything can be considered symbolic in the right frame
of mind. There are actual academic essays and papers about the
symbolism of pieces of art where none actually exists or was intended,
and some artists will even claim their piece has symbolism when they
didn't put any actual thought into it (they may or may not actually
believe it themselves).

Sorta remedied the quote there.

Though as an opposed view - do you actually know much about what Hideaki Anno intended or put into the show? You don't.

Your point is fair but doesn't say much in particular. A black swan exists. Many white ones do as well. In certain cases swans can be called even purple or yellow, even if not speaking via biology, it's still valid.
(if you get by my drift and the messy analogy...)

Things are *not* defined and ultimately understood through intent or "will of the creator" as much as they are in themselves, via a particular framework of viewing them.

I usually call it the show where every main character needs a therapist.

Welcome to the Subjective. I can't say I love the show for symbolism specifically; for me, it was more along the lines of human psychology with a bit of philosophy. If NGE isn't your cup of tea, I get that. A great portion of that show isn't more than above average writing whilst blowing up some aliens in strange and eccentric ways.

Reminds me of things some of the modern art propenets would say.
