I just saw the confrontation scene between Kariya and Tokiomi again and jeez Kariya is an idiot.

He should have told Tokiomi what happened to Sakura.

 

Even though Tokiomi is a traditional mage I'm sure he would have helped her.

He would have. This is explored further in the LN and how it explains that both Rin and Sakura have dangerous potential(UBW and hF proves this) He wanted Sakura to have teachings for her magic and thought the Matous who where old friends was a good choice, he didn't know the full details, Kariya did and Kariya being the selfish idiot he is just caused more damage. He could have easily saved Sakura but nope. Heck even in the LN they show that emotional, Tokiomi is not doing well. He really misses his daughter.

 

This is one side plot that was horrible done in the anime because it skipped so much content that the LN explored. The other ones being Kiri and Maiya relationship and
