If your first experience with Fate is Fate Zero then that scene might not seem that important but if you've read the VN you know that that's not true  .

After the mud falls on Gil, Gils body is destroyed and his spirit converses with Angra Mainyu inside the grail. They have a talk and Gil rejects everything from him. Angra Mainyu then spits Gil out with his new body(True Incarnation) that is heavily connected to Angra Mainyu, just like Kotomines heart. Kotomine and Gil are now connected to Angra Mainyu because of this

 

This convo and some details on the Body and Heart are not in the anime.

When I was watching the last few episodes today I tried to put myself in the shoes as someone who hadn't read the VN and I kept thinking; "this doesn't work, what is going on"

That's cos the manga is done by Hiromu Arakawa.

 

Also it's based of the novels by the same dude who wrote LOTGH.

 

But then that dude wrote Tytania too

 

I've just watched two episodes of Tytania and it was uninteresting and kinda weird.

 

There was a Dragon related anime by him too which looked interesting. But there was not enough "seeds" to watch it.

A lot of anime is turning more and more into nothing but fetish-fuel to pander to the most extreeme otakus, going over the top and showing it EVERYWHERE. Zero subtlelty.

It can be fun to laugh one or twice, but when a show is built upon it? Frak it.

Frak Iliya and frak Kaeleneid (or whatever it's called)

Um you do know that Archer worked out extensively in his life alongside his heavy use of projection. He just didn't devise his weapon style or became good with a bow over night. All of that is from when he lived and his brutal training.
