I don't know what happened. This series has gotten a jump-start and ever since that arc the rest have been amazing. It's like it's jumped up and down and has now suddenly found its medium.
It's always been good, mind you, but the word 'master piece' never came to mind, but it might just now.
That neo-nazi rubbish did a lot of harm for me though.
Thank you, friend! :3 It's technically the third time I've attempted reading it but the upgrades to the VN and reassurances that the Fate route is fairly baka compared to the hnnngh of the rest is enough to keep me motivated to trudge through it. Fate-sensei House is making sure to keep me regularly hype trained so I'm excited. X3
But yeah, with Monster it's been the same thing for me so far. There were definitely points I really enjoyed (not sure if the anime covers it but Anna's conversation with Russo was a big one even though it was just a one shot chapter, same with the criminal psychologist part) but it still hadn't quite hit the point where I'd call it amazing yet (still really curious what they'll do with Tenma. I've basically rambled at Isi about how I really hope they eventually do... more with him though I'm still wondering if he's basically supposed to be the one generally good person in a world so filled with ulterior motives and such). Having Johan finally become more active instead of just the background character on everyone's lips is something I am generally excited to see play out. Especially considering at least the first chapter he moves into proper focus lets us see a bit of the charisma that's been discussed so much. So having you say you've felt it's bringing the score up a fair bit definitely excites me.

Tenma at the moment is really struggling. I suppose it's always been like that for him since the moment he set out to kill Johan. But I'd really wish he'd talk about his struggles as a Doctor who's foremost principle is saving lives when what he is aiming at is to end one.
Like, I could easily say him saving so many lives on the journey is his way to reaffirm his ideals... but then again, that's just conjecture and nothing he says proves that other than the fact that he has an almost compulsive obsession with saving lives. It goes beyond moral obligation or ethical principles, it's almost a freaking opiate for him.
Which I understand.
But it's left to us to sort of beat around the bush instead of telling us (in one way or another) what is actually going on in his head.

Right. For me there *is* that fascinating dynamic of him saving so many lives while technically on a quest to end one. His undoubtedly massive sense of personal responsibility on the matter (of saving Johan and what that lead to) is a point I do very much enjoy, but much like you I do wish they'd let us into his head a little more. I do like the fact that fifty chapters in, I'm still not really all that able to predict end game, I'm mostly just hoping that Johan being pushed forward will break the current plot pattern of Tenma helping people for better or worse and leaving a trail of people fairly loyal to him because of it.
*If* the manga/anime does touch upon how both men build their loyalties through entirely different methods, I'll be happy.
Definitely glad to hear the dub is great too. Liam's a fab VA in general even though I'll always think of Aki when I hear him (which makes him voicing a ton of nameless NPCs in New Vegas kind of hilarious to me
). Going to have to look up who they chose for Johan since I have a certain sort of voice for him in my head as I read, so I'm curious if either casting choice felt the same.
