Well guess I'll post my impressions then.

 

But before we start, could someone pick up that phone?

Ever since Archer revealed that he had no aspirations for the Grail to Shirou back in S1, it put forward the notion that he is the least dangerous in the game, considering all the other contestants harbour a personal need and will put their own interest before any other in their quest for it. However, it raises the question what if Archer acquires something to gain throughout the game, especially during the wrong moment for Rin--which as much transpired in this very episode.

 

Before we get to the Church incident; I'd like to talk about what the episode brought up in terms of its theme--which was 'regret'. This episode served as a proper continuation from where we left off, putting emphasis on both Shirou and Rin's emotional weight that they are currently feeling. Shirou contemplates on his ideals and motivation from starting on his very quest to be a hero and for taking up the task of fighting in this game. While brief, it not only acts as a method to nicely put the viewer up to speed on why Shirou is doing this, but also why he feels the need to keep fighting. I'm glad that this was brought up, since I found it vital that the show addresses on Shirou's feelings and where he stands. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, nor is it needed, since it establishes that he is determined to see this through and that there are no rooms for regret. Rin in turn has up to this point seen what the Holy Grail War truly means, and is feeling the weight off it as well. The events on the bridge, and her actions towards Shirou most prominently. She is struggling a lot more with her emotions, and seeks guidance from Archer as a means to balance her feelings. It has been clear right from the start that this game has been a much larger bit than she could chew, wherein she has constantly been balancing on a thin line regarding her "moral orientation" in this game and where she should fall. Archer--the cynical person that he is--sees what Rin is capable off, but his answer is still rather interesting considering the events that have taken place during the journey and takes place in the church. From what I gather, Archer knows that Rin has problems with her emotions, so it is rather interesting that he repeats the same statement towards Rin that he has said before; that she is capable of moving forward, despite her "problems". While I do think he is genuine, ultimately I believe he manipulated Rin a bit in the garden so that she would have a "straight head" for what would come (and not see his betrayal).

 

Now the incident at the Church; well I didn't see it coming even though I had my suspicion of Archer pulling something off. It certainly puts the story (and his character) in an interesting place. Considering the stunts that he has pulled off, it should be evident that he is willing to achieve his goal in what he believes is the most effective way possible. He has switched sides, so naturally what is on everyones mind is "why". Either he has found something to fight for and sees that he can't win it together with Rin (that one line of freeing Saber being the switch that set him off) or his mindset hasn't changed at all, and simply sees this method being the best way for winning the war with Rin on top. I suspect it is the latter, which I hope is the case since this way it would really put forward Archer has a proactive character who properly analysis his situation, since Rin is not as apathetic as she potentially should be in this war and is something Archer considers a weakness. So instead of him simply hoping that all the pieces fall correctly in place with luck, he takes the helm himself through the aid of Caster. This would at least make for a very compelling scenario. However it might be, Archer finding a goal to fight to win for himself or still aiding Rin, all is in character for him and which is something I enjoy since it puts the viewer in a "yes or no" situation.

 

That last scene with Shirou and Rin was not only tender, but also compelling and fitted nicely with the narrative b/c they both have suffered. They both have experienced and endured the Holy Grail War and what it means; they have both lost their Servants and have both brought up the issue of regretting everything. In this moment they are--again--balancing each other as individuals, and finding the motivation to keep fighting. I especially loved how regret came into play here as well, with Shirou stating: "That belief is a mess of patches". And he is right, it ultimately up to you and what you believe in. You alone make the distinction of what you regret or not, and if you want to move on. It isn't always easy to distinguish what is right and wrong, especially with everything that transpires in the Grail War. 

 

So UBW S2 is off to a solid start, and while I don't know what the VN did differently, it worked for the anime and I am glad for it. It is certainly good to have another reason to wait for the weekend!
