Mature themes can only be taken seriously up to a point. Not as much when explored by kids who have no buisness exploring them in the first place.
Well, if anything is to be taken seriously it's mature themes. What's with the "to a point" then?
Also, do you claim kids don't explore mature themes? Mostly the world around doesn't select what info or specific categories of experiences to "give" dependant on age. Say hello to child soldiers. That you deem the practice wrong doesn't make depiction of it wrong in any way (besides promoting it, and Hunter X Hunter certainly doesn't do that).
edit: Though to be honest, the themes in Hunter x Hunter weren't of child soldiers per se (I speak in past tense because of a personal bias towards the "modern" take on it, as exemplified in the current anime). But it *is* tied to related concepts - yet most of all it reminds me of a very pure work of imagination and fiction. One could compare to childhood fantasies (which are in fact often bloodier and more messy 'n violent than one might think) and/or nightmares.

Haha..wait till you reach episodes 70-80.
It's then the real shockers start.
Friandly advice: don't get too attached to any character. Plot shields seem to be nearly non-existent in this show.
Thanks for the advise. I'll be more inclined to socio-politics and military of the galaxy and their details. Still the characters are well written and the sum of these aspects make this series quite enjoyable.

Mature themes can only be takes seriously if explored seriously and if approached seriously.
An episode of MLP talking about rape does not make it deep and mature.
If a world is too silly to be taken seriously, if the characters are to silly to be taken seriously then how can I take the themes themselves seriously?
Only your characters have their place in stories, but that place has to make sense to begin with. Child soldiers - for example - appear in third world countreis, in fanatical and desperate circumstances. And even then they are not that common, since an adult will always make a more capable soldier.
So no, I don't like at all the avalanhce of child protagonists who fall into cockpits of supermecha or otherwise become saviors of the world or routinely engange in activites that are not for them and excell. Sometimes the anime manages to offer a somewhat/barely plausible explanation, but that is a rarity rather than the rule.

Really? So when you were reading the first chapter or watching the first episodes, did you pick up on any similarities to another famous anime series? Boy sets out on a journey to follow in his dad's footsteps and become a "Hunter."
When you first heard of the series, what did you think the characters would do by "Hunting"? The first chapter doesn't really give off a good indication as to what their world is really like; Togashi purposefully leaves it vague. After reading the first chapter, did you ever wonder what exactly Hunters do? What is this license supposed to provide for them? Why Gon has to be 12 in order to take the exam? Furthermore, he takes it in order to follow in his father's footsteps? Whom also is the "best" Hunter (according to Kite)? The new anime series even has Gon say that he wants to become the world's "best" Hunter too...haha. Does this sound familiar at all?
It's Pokémon. Hunter x Hunter is supposed to be extremely reminiscent of Pokémon in the beginning. The setups are near identical. Boy departs on a quest to become something that, truthfully, the reader doesn't fully understand. Meets some friends along the way, makes a rival. Wants to find his father. All of these things were characteristic of Pokémon.
This is something that might get lost in translation, but the word "Hunter" is always written using Katakana in Japanese. But by no means is it exclusively used to refer to the profession of actual hunting in Japanese; there are many other terms used frequently. Instead of becoming "Pokémon Masters [ポケモンマスター Pokemon Masutaa], the charaters are becoming "Hunters [ハンター Hantaa]. I'm fairly certain that the parallel and similarity between the words is supposed to be there.
There's similarities in the setup, but the first chapter also makes it known that things are going to go horribly wrong. Other than Killua, Gon is the only child taking the Hunter Exam. Becoming a Hunter is an adult profession, unlike a Pokémon "Master." The first arc slowly starts to introduce how deadly and scary their world really is. And then during the fourth phase, the true implications behind hunting start to reveal themselves. Gon literally has to allow several people to die in order to survive, and he's only spared because an enemy shows compassion to him. The show starts to show more and more of its hand and eventually starts taking its character psychologies incredibly seriously. Everyone who becomes a Hunter is literally crazy, in some way. They're extremely flawed. And it's not exactly the noble profession Togashi outlined in the beginning. Togashi takes something childish (even down to the stupid title... "Hunter Hunter"???] and applies a serious worldview to it.
Most of the other arcs actually try to take a common shonen trope and spin it on its head. For instance, the "Beyond" in the newest chapters and Beyond Netero are obviously channeling One Piece. The Heavens Arena Tournament (Tenkuu Tougijou)? The Tenka'ichi Budoukai.
I said this to eroeru once.

So I bought the seventh volume of Bakuman (I'm missing 3 now) and ordered the third online, along with the fourth volume of Death Note's Black Edition, and the first three volumes of Toradora, simply because I love that show, and I'd like to own them, heh.
I perused the store to my little heart's content, and started sifting through Bleach, and (this is for you Geth) I realized that there were (as you said) no backgrounds in most of the panels.
From the second volume of Bakuman, I gathered that your drawings had to be top-notch to make it in a weekly issue of Jump, but what Bleach is doing seems like an extremely lazy approach. Along with the dwindling story, I'm honestly surprised they're still making more. The character design is good, but that's honestly all I can see that's above average here.

The show is actually a deconstruction and commentary on shows that take child protags as a lead (and from then onward gives us a very bloody, moody and interesting story).

Bleach got popular fast. And when you add in the anime fandom (crazy fangirls who love that tiny ice guything) who buys all the Bleach junk, you have a series that Shueisha wants to keep around.Lightning Cloud wrote...

But Bleach the manga itself is less popular nowadays, Kubo has to do ass pulls to try and keep it in the top rankings.
As for above average character design?

Kubo really stopped trying.

Kinda sad though to be honest. I really did like the older episodes. And I'm sure the manga was better back then too.
