Yeah, I suppose, but that's the reason I never know what's going on in that show. Every time I DO see it there's nothing going on.

Sarcasm? :o
I know there's a lot of anime that does that. I mean, that's one thing people who hate anime like to complain about, but most of the action series I watch have quite a bit of action in them. Like Gurren Lagann, for example. There's a fight in most every episode, if not all of them.

Don't get me wrong, I like non-fight based stuff too, but if it's about these badass warriors I'd like to see some actual fights more often.

Action/fights are great as long as the animation is good.

Action/fights are as awesome as the characters participating and overall mood/direction behind it.'

As to DBZ filler, I liked all of it. Don't remember much though, aside Gohan going to school for a sec.

Yeah, Some Geth's point is more important than the "fantasy" or "mature" part of it.

The show is actually a deconstruction and commentary on shows that take child protags as a lead (and from then onward gives us a very bloody, moody and interesting story).

I still hate kids with spiky hair.
Which is what I originaly said. There are certain things that I just don't like. Certain types of characters or certain design decisions. Even if I end up liking the story.

For example, I kinda like Saint Seiya. But I utterly DESPISE the main character. In each and every series.  And I utterly hate the newst art style with a passion. Ok, the entire series has been on a decline and hit rock bottom, but still.

I'm trying to make a point here.
Ugly character designs are a negative point in my book.

Well I don't think you know what an ugly character design is. But have you ever thought maybe, just maybe there is a point to the character design?

Not gonna lie, the design of Air Master puts me off. It looks like it was made way before 2003.

I like that sort of design, for a change. Just yesterday was watching some Tenjho Tenge and Tsukihime, last I saw them was years ago. And certainly, odd unnatural-feeling pacing and likewise settings ftw!

Doesn't make that main character look any less silly or ugly.

You yourself say that the series as a deconstruction and takes a serious approach to a more childish plot. Which is good....but that makes it even harder to take it seriously when the main character looks like a porcupine.

Drama is harder to take seiously when people make silly faces. Thats one of the reasons One Piece's tragic moments always felt..forced..fake. When a guy screams in agony/sadness, and open his mouth wide enough to swallow a tanker (making a funny face actually) I'm having trouble discerning if the show wants me to laugh or to cry.
Drama and comedy dott' mix well at the same time.

As little as I've seen the One Piece anime, I'd agree with that.

edit: Yet obviously for many people it works, and though I haven't really gotten to that, I bet there's some different kind of approach and intent there to portray drama!

So you are the judge on that?

Yeah it is a deconstruction and does take a serious approach to a very childish story type. And what do main characters look like in those story types? Like Gon. Would it be a true deconstruction of that type of story if he didn't look (and act) like those main characters? I would say no, manga is more than just the writing you know, the art tells the story too. Beileve me if you read HxH you would end up taken it and Gon's character seriously.

You might end up seeing him as scary at times too.

As for what you are talking about with One Piece, I may as well post the page you are talking about so everyone knows what we are talking about.

I said in the past that I agree that the face was a bad choice on Oda's part. But I get why he did it. Luffy never had anyone die on him in the story, we the readers had no clue what kind of effect it would have on him. And Oda wanted to show us just how hard Ace's death hit him. So that is why we have the face above.

He was never going for comedy with that scene, so I don't understand your problem. Sure he could have picked a better face design, but I think he got the point across at least. I mean kids will understand, so adults should understand it as well right?

And that and maybe Chopper's stuff are the only tragic scenes in all of One Piece to have characters open their mouths in such way. So want to fill me in on all the tragic scenes of One Piece again?

Yes. If you realyl want to argue that it doesn't matter, it's a debate you have already lsot before it begun.

Unless you think if I took a drama...like Dead Poets Society.. and replaced the main character with bugs bunny (with his facial expressions), it would make no difference in atmosphere?

Like Gon. Would it be a true deconstruction of that type of story if he didn't look (and act) like those main characters?

Yes. Because spiky hair is not necessary for deconstruction. The plot outline and behavior is what is important for deconstruction.

I would say no, manga is more than just the writing you know, the art tells the story too. Beileve me if you read HxH you would end up taken it and Gon's character seriously.

Nope.. super-kiddies in incredible worlds and incredible roles don't work for me. The more redicolous the character (and world) design, the more redicolous motivations and behavior are, the harder it is to take things seriously.

I actually like that One Piece art.

What would bother me more in the anime were the more comedic "drama" scenes where the character would just be angry or something and yell.

The scene was worse in the anime, they had Luffy's mouth moving in a very strange way.

I think those drama scenes you are talking about might be gag scenes. :P

Why must you two always bring this up every few pages? Really. You two never have, and never will see eye to eye on this, and all it does is run the risk of locking this thread.

Do I need to send Pedoro over there?
