Ok not to interrupt the 36 different conversations going on right now. But could I ask for a recommendation?

I just got done with re-watching/finishing up Claymore. And I'm really digging the dark and gritty fantasy vibe and the character development was good too. So uh.... Whats in that ballpark that you guys would suggest?

You may want to ask the others, I prefer Gundam above all else and so on and so forth.

As someone who likes but for the most part doesn't love Gundam, 08th MS Team is great, better even than Zeta.

Oh, and G Gundam is awesome, but it's not really a Gundam show. It's a martial arts show that happens to have mecha in it (and the finale of GBFT made me need to rewatch it)....

I liked the 08th MS Team, but Zeta will likely be my favorite forever. The extremely high death count (I think 6 out of a cast of about 30 survive), the war having 3 factions fighting all at once and

. Zeta was full of surprises and I just found it to be amazing because of that. Never knew what was going to go down in Zeta, Zeta did Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones was even a thing.

I prefer my mechs to be more realistic in size(aside from Gurren Lagann for obvious reasons) which is why I have always prefered shows like Escaflowne for mech fights.

Now and Then, Here and There is dark as can be. It's an older anime, but it's really well done. The villain is insane and sent chills down my spine. I'm going to straight up warn you that it has a rape in it.

Darker than Black is a good one too, it involves beings with powers called Contracters and the main character hunts down and kills them. It's somewhat dark and sad.

Hellsing: Ultimate is decent if you like vampires.

I think you might enjoy Darker than Black the most of the three. I haven't watched a lot of dark and gritty anime.

Yeah, Zeta was awesome, definitely the best of the TV shows. I just love the smaller scale, almost realistic nature of 08th MS Team.

Well, Higurashi: When they cry is a dark, gritty fantasy with good character development, so I recommend you watch that. Really is something special, it tips back and forth between being adorable and chilling in such a manner that these parts compliment one another in the best possible way. Best horror anime I've seen. Watch it right now. It has a reputation for being extremely violent, but don't let that put you off, it's more subtle than you might think.

Claymore and Berserk are always mentioned in the same sentence.

But you need to read the manga for Berserk, anime is not an option.

Wolf's Rain is good.

I added pictures to the original post, so you could see the art styles. It took longer than intended because BSN was being a real wiener about not liking the image extensions.

That's fair. It was the most realistic out of the Gundams, it didn't have any of the newtype or coordinater type stuff. It wasn't supernatural in any sense. I thought the ending was fantastic too. I really enjoyed the bond between the 08th MS Team

Yeah, the anime isn't the best for Berserk. I lost interest after 2 episodes.

Gundams, though are some of the more powerful mechs in the entire history of mecha, but have two weaknesses.

Their size and the fact that they're bipeds. That alone calls for a strong tripwire or something like that and you could bring the thing down. Orbital Frames would be in your lot since they're a lot smaller and more powerful. (Zone of the enders).

Armored Cores... I guess before 5th gen they are around 40 feet. That's 20 less feet than most mobile suits.

You can't say Gundam is bland compared to other animes due to the amount of series, the depth of the UC timeline and the fact that Gundam evolved the bar for mecha, and defined the real robot genre. However, it's success lies largely in Japan, which is why they won't market a lot of things easily to the US. Wing brought it to America but G Fighter kinda harmed it. Not saying G fighter is bad, but it was a different kind of Gundam. This threw the audience off. 079 was too dated for many as well.

Of course, the main robots in America are Transformers... and I hate them. But Michael Bay raped the series so I feel a little bad.

Coordinators are something that is possible...

Newtypes and Innovators... I doubt it.

The first rule of Gundam is to expect a character you like to die. That happens a lot, which is good because in war not everyone is supposed to survive.

I'd agree with you in terms of Coordinators being possible if we exclude SEED Mode from the equation.

I don't mind Newtypes when they're done on the level of the original series (basically just psychic communication and excessive skill with mecha), with Zeta (a bit of physical manifestation of their powers) pushing it about as far as I can live with, but I hate it when their powers get to the levels seen in stuff like Char's Counterattack or Unicorn. Really detracts from the main aspects of the show -  awesome mecha and the horrors of war - when "superpowered space magic saves the day".

And yeah, I was expecting exactly that with the end of 08th (possibly slightly influenced by the fact I watched it straight after Victory....). And despite usually loving that kind of thing, I was actually really happy that they didn't do it.

I guess I look at the economical and processing ore part to make the Gundams. That is a lot of metal, and the amount they make would take all of the Earth's resources very quickly. I know of the the mining industry on the astroids, but still, something that size isn't economical.I liked the Armored core series when I played the games.

I guess the main reason I say it is bland is because I am tired of the main characters saying peace on Earth and all that blah blah non-sense. They went over the top on it which turned me off. As for Transformers, I never cared for them either.

I don't either, it was just nice to see the "normies" kicking ass and taking names for once.

It was my first. I also watched Seed and the sequel to it along with one other. I am not going to watch every single thing with Gundam in it to see if it's good or not. I am the type that if I don't like something the first time I try/do it. I'll never touch it again.

I liked Wing, but I didn't take it seriously either (I really couldn't when Heero would self destruct his Gundam while standing on it and come out unscathed). I looked at it from a fun angle. Heck, Wing even had Wolverine in it.

I immensely disliked Endless Waltz though (all the Gundam movies suck for some reason).

Everything is dumb tropes.

Everyone can be broken down into collective tropes put together by life's stitching.

I wasn't complaining about tropes. I was complaining about these particular tropes.

But yeah, traps can be mean. And screw one-dimensional characters. And being more a fan of personalities, I don't like it when creators make young "attractive" girls just to make older audiences feel attracted to that. I'm over 20 years old, I don't need to think that 14 year old doing weird things to that popsicle is attractive.

Whatever about 'traps.'

Part of the problem with these tropes is that the trope becomes the end itself and the characters do end up being one-dimensional. Also they're just dumb, but that's a YMMV.

True enough about the rest. Lolis are terrible. To Love Ru is terrible.
