It's been a few years since I read the VN but yeah I do remember the Near side having better routes.

The first half was alright, but it really picked up during the second half. All in all a very enjoyable show.

I didn't watch it because I heard it was kinda shitty. All angsty and gory with no depth. Though admittedly MAL reviews aren't exactly the most reliable source of info.
The movie is kinda meh, but the series is great...

Escaflowne I have really fond memories of cause I loooooved it growing up. Thing is, I was young and ignorant to the fact that the dubbed version was mangled all to hell and then they cancelled it. 
I've been meaning to sit down and watch it proper though, since I really would like to see how everything plays out.
ETA: If the music that Fate sensei has given me is any indication, I'm right there on board with wanting the Mahou translation to someday be complete too...
