So here's a long-ass (and spoiler free) post about Monster.

So after some half-assed attempt at careful thought and consideration I decided to make a sort of long-ass post about Urusawa's “Monster.” It's a long show, numbering at seventy four episodes with so much going on that it's pretty hard to condense it all into just a few short paragraphs like I'd prefer, or rather, I would really like for some of this thread's members to watch or read it. I wouldn't be doing this story justice if I made broad strokes like “a study of the human psyche” because though it is, there's a whole lot more to it.

But knowing me, I'll just do that anyway.

Naoki Urusawa's 'Monster' is essentially a story about humans and how ourselves as individuals are shaped through social circumstance. I'm not qualified to talk about the psychological effects of the narrative but I do have some knowledge on how sociology works and the anime handles this with finesse.

What initially begins as a twist to the Frankenstein story progresses into something between Poirot's “Five Little Pigs” and Silence of the Lambs whilst still holding onto that frame. Admittedly, the mixture is rather obtuse since it is on the top of my head, regardless, the narrative (a tale of intrigue, mystery and twists) is handled masterfully employing the right amount of information at a pace to keep your curiosity peaked at every turn.

The quality of the narrative on a basis outside thematic significance never truly becomes “amazing” until the thirtieth episode or so. The story sort of fluctuates between average to very good to brilliant for that amount of time. At one point I was seriously regretting my decision to invest so much on this.

I'm glad I stuck through it.

However, this is not for those with little patience or a short attention span. This anime is even slower than Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The pacing might be good, but it doesn't mean that some might fall asleep whilst watching it. This is an anime that belongs (I guess) to the “anime not for people who dislike anime” category. It's a silly thing but I'm sure you all know what I mean. Ghost in the Shell, Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Cowboy Bebop would number amongst these.

In short, this would have no problem in being dramatised by HBO.

Despite all the praise I do have to mention that I was slightly disappointed on the 'end game' of one of the other players in the drama. It's very far fetched (but I suppose appropriate) for right-winged German extremists. Furthermore, the ending does have its issues that would stimulate quite a lot of argument amongst fans. Yet it does little harm to what is truly important about Monster.

Monster's true strength lies in its thematic consistency, and do I mean consistency. Every turn and event will always relate to the main theme: “the monster inside of me.” From Doctor Tenma's struggle between his beliefs and the ends of his journey to Inspector Lumegey's compulsive obsession with his work and how his familial life is destroyed because of it; Nina's uncovering of her past and Private Eye Richard's battle with alcoholism. Almost every character will be faced with a struggle or dilemma that truly challenges their moral principles and ethical responsibilities and the development of said characters are based on these decisions or mistakes.

The main theme is extended onto a social context. Like I've mentioned before, many times does ethnic supremacism and national extremism play a part in the plot, often a device to further strengthen just how double sided human nature can be as well as further deepen the lengths of its mystery. It's no surprise that it would be so effective as the entire thing is set in a post-Berlin-Wall Germany.

Other themes like the importance of identiy, duality, what it means to be human and a plethora (wow wtf sim) of other minor themes are underlined upon the main one. Still, this comes down to how f*cked I can be to write so much about other things that aren't the most apparent.

Another thing I enjoy is Monster's distinct awareness on where the line between extreme and moderacy lies. Fitting for a story like Berserk, but not exactly in a Drama about human nature. Extremes are performed underneath a layer of moderacy. The awful experiments performed on the children at 511 Kinderheim are drug induced, mentally and physically abusive. Still, there a clinical touch that creates a daunting atmosphere of dread and despair because you suddenly realise just how these things are an actual reality.

To finally wrap up this sh*t-for-brains post of mine, what Monster achieves is not only an astute study of human nature, its evils and its goods, but portrays it on a masterful level with complex characters that matter, compelling intrigues and a mystery written on the skill of a classic British Crime drama. There's really very little I can complain about, and there are many things that are worth lengthy discussions to grasp exactly what Urusawa intended for such and such a scene.

So yeah, woohoo.

Ugh... 2am.

So that's how much I could condense what's important without going into detail about each and every character, what they stand for and what they accomplish for the narrative.

I'll leave that sh*t to Chewin if he ever gets to it.

On a side note, the dub is fantastic and from all of Liam O'brien's characters, Doctor Kenzo Tenma is my favourite. He captures the body language and the mood perfectly. You do really feel that this is very good Live Action Crime Drama at certain points.

It's really an amazing watch. I don't think I'll ever find an anime like this again.

It will either make 5th or 6th in my list, before or after HxH.

No.

But I do have the entire Fushigi Yuugi VHS collection.

Probably cost me and my sister 700 bucks total to actually collect them all back in the day, and that's for just over 50 episodes worth. We'd just pool our allowance and buy 1 at a time. Took years to get the entire series.

Damn kids and your relatively cheap anime *shakes cane*

Saw the entire series on DVD the other week for less then 1 of the VHS tapes use to cost.

If it was about half of that I'd be ok with it.

$25-$27 isn't too bad a price considering how cheap the animation is.

Still a nice opening though.

Yeahhh ... just checked the prices again. Definitely over a grand.

With the current rates, I end up with a price of approximately 1250$ for the whole series. Before taxes and shipping.

Edit: And I'm pretty sure there's some that are much more expensive.

Meh, Both seasons of UBW had better OPs, and This Illusion in Ep12 was better then that remix tbh.

Another Heaven is still Tyoe-Moons best OP tho.

Also this was before you could just switch between dubs and subs at your own leisure or had extra features and ****. I remember once we got a VHS for Fushigi Yuugi that had 3 episodes and 2 were recap ones and I was just like "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"

This was also back in the day when I had to walk 10 kilometers through the snow uphill both ways and we didn't have the internet for forum discussions or pirating.

Also well I'm sure the show hasn't aged amazingly well, major props to having the first transvestite I ever saw in media, and double props for making them such a good character. This character ended up being the first time a show ever made me cry.

It's funny cause even as a younger kid I thought the way they treated homosexuality and such was demeaning and pointlessly stupid. It was refreshing to watch a show that didn't dance around it to protect our fragile minds <_< *cough* Card Captors *cough*
