Or rather, if I were to project my "shoulds" he shouldn't have started, or at least he'd stopped.

Light did play himself into into a corner, but it was boring and stupid the way it happened. There was no thematic edge to anything that happened at the end. Light got outsmarted and then died a ridiculous villain.
Light did need to die, but the way it happened was stupid.

I don't think he necessarily should've stopped. What he was doing was bad, but a lot of good was coming from it. What, a 80% drop in crime and stop to war? That's pretty good.
It was bad in principle. And believe it or not, smart people act on principle more than you think.
It's impossible to go against the whole world, and methodologically and philosophically really iffy to judge, moreso with a death sentance.
If Light were in this sense more "smart" (i.e if I'd project my maybe more personal "shoulds"), then he would have needed to look for a way to enhance his cognitive capabilities with some sci-fi device in order to be able to process all the info needed to pass massive death sentances (to take into account the various effects), and in succession he would have either found out that it's impossible to make such wide-scale decisions and effect-analysis for a person and would not have killed anyone (the more probable option me thinks) or found out this impossibility and started killing most people on Earth, out of sheer cynicism for humans.

He just died in the warehouse like an idiot. So Near and the readers could laugh at him I guess?
Light's profile if he was written into like a character profile would describe him as a sociopath, but the way he acts changes from sociopath to Snideley Whiplash.
If Light thinks he's Jesus, why does he do all those awful stupid evil grins. Like when he stares down at dying L, it should be this sort of "Justice is done" look. Not MWAHAHAHAHAHA.
Plus there's incongruity of when Light loses his memory and the way he acts then and every other time.
Light never acted like that before the Death Note, and not at first. He was always sullen and seemingly sociopathic. Nothing about his change to IM A GOOD GUY was credible.
Light should have at least been like Michael Corleone.
Hell Michael Corleone is a perfect comparison. Michael even "wins". He remains Don, and crushes all his enemies. But he loses everything he cared about in the process and dies alone and unhappy.
Would Godfather 2 (or 3 if you want to count that) have ended well with Michael flailing on the ground dying? Naw, than Godfather would be Scarface, and we'd be deprived of quality cinema.

Because I feel that Light could've easily of succeeded with his original plan if it weren't for the existence of L and the task force. He wouldn't necessairly need to make any of the deaths seem circumstantial if he didn't have investigators of the talent level chasing after him that he did have chasing after him. Even if the media stopped reporting names, Light already showed a capability of hacking Police headquarters and an ability to make people with access to information and power trust him.

Yet Death Note is a more out-there world and balanced accordingly. As far as I know from the anime, all behaved to a good logical pattern.

Except that it seems to me that the only person Light cares about is himself.
An uninspired and sad life nontheless - all in all...
Not to mention the inevitable moral tension which would prolly build his sociopathy into maniacal behavior. In other words: he would have turned considerably insane by doing what he was doing, no matter if there's a super-police on his trail or not.

I've also organized my room. A bit of "Spring Cleaning" if you will. My bookshelf has all my manga organized, along with my strategy guides, DVDs, and a massive stack of Game Informers, with a significantly smaller stack of my Otaku USA magazines.
I dunno why I'm posting all of this. I'm just really excited about how nice everything looks.
