I considered picking up season 2 but went with SNAFU instead so will be waiting until the season near the end before I pick it up. The first season was good so worth giving a shot for those that have not watched it yet

On another note

 

I took a look at the top 5 best seasonal anime on animeranking (see here http://www.animerank...hp?id=356&li=1)and I noticed that Nisekoi S2 is 5th. Anyone watched that? I know it's a harem but I don't know anymore than that.

 

Apparently it's a great comedy thing but it kinda splits opinions due to it especially just being filler.

Great episode! It managed to hit almost all the right notes, and far exceeded my expectations.

 

There are several reasons for why I enjoyed this episode, though the biggest strength for me was adding a connection to Zero, which I initially feared it wouldn't. As much as it was vital to bring forward Illya's motivations for being in the war, the relationship between her and Berserker, and her role as an homunculus, what really makes the episode stand out is how it establishes F/SN as a functioning sequel through various causes and aspects. Illya--just like her mother and father--is a tragic character, more so than her parents. What separates her from Kiritsugu and Irisviel, is that she a remnant of the previous war. She is a mere tool to be utilized, and why Irisviel found a reason to exist due to Kiri, Illya is alone. Why Iri and Kiri did love Illya, she wasn't someone neither would truly risk their life for since they both saw something more important in their own ideals and managed to (partially) support each other through what unfolded. Illya--just like Kiritsugu--once knew love but had that taken from her, and is left alone to struggle, but with nothing to cling to. That is of course until Berserker is summoned, in which they both find themselves to be only pawns, both in life and in a conflict that the Grail War represent, and through that revelation manages to support one another.

 

While I would have loved to have Illya and Shirou meet up and talk, since arguably they both could have brought something interesting to the table, I was however pleased with the outcome; since the events were well-executed in characterizing Illya (and Berserker to an extent) and shedding further light how large of a hole the climax of Zero had for people. The episode didn't make me care about Illya or feel particularly sad about the incident, since I rarely tend to do so with characters that gets most of their identities revealed in their very last moments, but it made me appreciate her as a character, instead of her just being a "cute, murderous loli" that I initially saw her as.

 

Another reason that made me appreciate the episode was Gilgamesh himself. Yet again he is facing someone of worth, and while his respect for his opponent is an appreciated characteristic, what resonated with me was how it mirrored his confrontation with Iskandar in more ways than one. Gilgamesh is facing someone who not only can match him in combat, but also someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves for someone else. It is even made powerful of those who are familiar with Hercules legend; who was someone who killed his children by the whims of the Gods. In this fight, Berserker is desperately trying to save Illya in anyway possible. Gilgamesh, who quite clearly shows knowledge of Hercules' legend, knows this and is continuously berating Berserker to abandon Illya. I didn't see it as a mere taunt to have Berserker fight him for real, but also a method to challenge Berserker mentally--to challenge his resolve. By the end Berserker dies, sacrificing himself as a way to attone for his sin. I truly enjoyed that there was no laughter from Gilgamesh, no mocking remarks, only a dead, cold stare as he killed Illya. The scene is made ever so powerful when Illya is still despite it all clinging to Berserker, and having Gil standing by her side as she states her dying words, I couldn't help but think of Gil's words to Waver; "Your loyalty is splendid. Never tarnish it." I believe that Gil, who had referred to Illya simply as a "doll" throughout the episode, couldn't help but sense a sense of respect for someone like her.

On the plus side Chewin, all that stuff for Illya will serve as a good prelude for HF when she gets an insane amount of content and a massive role in the story, along with Shirou and Illya talking about Kiri.

I think few people realize that Gil is generally quite accurate with all his statements, pretentious as most of them might be.

 

On the plus side Chewin, all that stuff for Illya will serve as a good prelude for HF when she gets an insane amount of content and a massive role in the story, along with Shirou and Illya talking about Kiri.

Really the fact that almost every single time he is summoned, he's connected in someway to Rin probably just makes it harder for him. Tied to Rin forever, poor Shirou XD

Good to hear. Most of his actions (while frustrating at times) are a part of his character, since while he may come across as rather "desolate", he is quite an emotional person. Though we already know that, and I'm just waiting for that step wherein he makes progress as a character. It has been "standing still" for a few episodes now, so hoping to see something substantial down the road.

Many of you speak highly of him, so I'm curios to see how it develops.
