- Archer acting like he's acting. We know that he is OP like Gil, so why all this running around?

If either of them wanted something, they could have gotten it on day 1.

Gil is in no rush I guess, Caster isn't either (and doesn't really want to kill everyone in the city either).

What exactly is he trying to achieve? He could have killed Shirou a thousand times by now, and his surrender to Caster ultimatively accomplished nothing.

1. He wanted to get rule breakered by Caster so he got rid of Rin's command seal were she told him he can't hurt Shirou.

2. He wanted to get Saber to make a contract with Rin (although only after he dealt with Shirou)

3. Archer only really wanted to kill Shirou after his talk at the ryudou temple but he still needed him alive so he could help Rin with the Caster situation (that's why he told Caster to let both Rin and Shirou go), Rin alone wouldn't have been able to deal with Kuzuki + Caster

The greater grail is way to the root. The root is the place every magician wants to reach. The normal grail is just something the families made so they could make a opening to the root.

Archer's swordspam isn't even that good against normal servants and would be at most an annoyance but against Gil it's the perfect counter.

He could have easiyl killed Shirou a hunderd times before

And while he is commanded to not attack Shirou, he doesn't really need that seal lifted. All he has to do is let Shirou get killed on his own or goad another servant into doing it for him.

There was nothing stopping him from letting someone else kill Shirou and he could just then murder everyone. It's not like Caster can stop his surprise attack.

 

The simpler answer is that he really doesn't want to kill Shirou, just get him to snap out of his self-destructive world-view.

Attacking him at the temple, from behind - he could have easily scored a fatal wound, but he didn't.

 

Like with Caster, what he DOESN'T do tells a lot.

It's been a long time since I read the lore parts from the HF route but I'm pretty sure it gets explained in that route. But I think House sensei can explain the grail part a lot better.
