It all comes down to taste, I can respect your preference, and I don't mind Moe in small doses. I am mostly referring to the Moe blob however, the shows that have no substance and just cute girls. Not entirely bad... but when the medium is flooded with them...

However I am an old anime fan, my preferences stretch back to the days of Legond of the Galacic heroes, Gunbuster (not diebuster. >.>), The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and similar. Sure I like cute but I need some interesting stories and situations to keep me connected to a series, not just eye candy you know?

K-On! started the Moe blob (or more accurately kicked off the craze, lucky star and Azumanga Daioh were probably the true start), but I wouldn't consider them one. K-on actually had some light story telling behind it, and was enjoyable for its time.

I'm different. I find it easier to connect with "everyday life" anime like K-On and Lucky Star than those sci-fi series. :wizard:

I have seen Lucky Star and I dislike it. Nichijou was okay I guess.

I think you misunderstand, I am not talking about slice of life comedies when I am talking about Moe blobs. A moe blob sacrifices EVERYTHING for the sake of having cute characters doing cute things, including a slice of life story. Which is what the general state of the industry is doing.

I like slice of life comedies, for example one of my favorites is Minami Ke!

Miniskirt Pirates looks like a take-off on Captain Harlock. Or, if you're a Frenchie, Albator.

Oh yeah, everybody who likes anything should watch Gun X Sword.

I...like....this....thread. :P

*ahem* Anyways, I find myself a bit bored now that the Bleach anime is now gone off the air in Japan. *at least for the moment* It'll be a while before we see it again. Current arc in the manga is going to take a while according to the internetz. :P

The editors at Shonen Jump keep yelling at Kubo to end Bleach quick, so they can make room for better manga. Sad thing is being "quick" just means five to ten years for Kubo to end it, since he does need money for food and sunglasses... And he has no clue on how to pace a story.

So go watch the new Hunter x Hunter anime is what I am saying.=]

Personally, I haven't minded big-boobs characters since I noticed that ten-year-olds are used as fan service characters. At least Asuka and Rei are going through puberty, Japan.

I can tolerate giant gag boobs (to a point..I don't like that trope really), but I utterly DESPISE fan service with child characters.
Such things should be clensed from the face of the earth together with the people that made it AND those who watch it.

With that said, for good sci-fi anime, I'd reccomend Planetes. Very, VERY hard sci-fi with a godo plot.
The most realistic take on starship combat I've seen has to be Starship Operators..altouhg its' kinda ..slow at times.

You know, I finally realised what Shepard needs in the fight against the Reapers: big a** mechs! A fleet of Gundams and the Reapers are history! :P

As much as I love anime, I haven't watched a single Gundam series yet... (though a few other mech-ones, if Escaflowne and Macross are to be counted). Any recommendations? :)

And, I just finished the third episode of Zetman. The series does not make any sense. The manga seems far better.

I would recommend Gundam 0083 and Gundam Wing. Both have great stories, mech action, and political/military intrigue. Enjoy!

Well, that's cliche'd but that scene at least has some tongue-in-cheek value to it.

The worst cliche'd moments are from Bleach. This for example. Or this.
I couldn't watch them thoroughly through, so I don't know if Ichigo even says (shouts) "I'll protect you" or "mamoru!" in those, but they're pretty awfully cliche'd still. Save the music - Shiro Sagisu knows his craft.

Also, I'd bring an example of some ecchi-filled, school-life oriented flick, but I sadly don't know the names of any.

Strawberry panic is pretty horrible, and cliche'd - but it's yuri rather than shonen. So it's really not so much about the demographic - shonen works can also be done awesomely well, like Death Note and Hunter X Hunter (and I personally vouch for Air Gear).

You know, i'm going to recommend an offbeat anime.

Akagi. Set in the 1950's, it is an anime about a young man (who seems like a devil sometimes) who conquers the world of mahjong in all its deadly glory. A good mature series filled with suspense and psychological warfare.
