I wish I was just making an exaggeration. lol

I was raised on the dub, straight on through from Raditz to Boo, and GYAAAGGGHHHHH is the dub bad.

Some people prefer old dub Freeza to Kai's new dub Freeza.

My mind struggles to comprehend how.

And then you have the people who like Falconer's music (the one where it sounds like some idiot's banging on a synth repeatedly)

The Vegeta is Pissed theme was pretty cool, but everything else kind of sucked. I can't believe that there's people that not only like Faulconer's music, but think it sounds wrong without it. (And people also think the dub is good, so... whatever.)

www.youtube.com/watch

And it was apparently named "Hell's Bells". Well, it just lost some of its cool.

And actually, its kind of terrible at 3:30 minutes. It's cool for 30 seconds. Never realized it was that long before... because it sounds the same all the way through.

The Spanish dub was actually pretty great. And uncensored.

And somehow pulled ahead of the English dub, and I ended up watching a Spanish channel locally for it. The characters actually like, emoted and stuff.

And did not have Sean Schemmel. Who even after 15 years and redubbing the series like 4 different times, is STILL a terrible Goku. And a far, far worse King Kai.

So yeah not impossible to make a good Dragon Ball dub.

On another note I love the idea of Kai. Just wish they'd done it right. Stick to the manga and only the manga, unless it was *really good* material that's generally beloved, like early character introduction moments or possibly some of the extended fight stuff that isn't nonsensical. ... or if you just need to pad an episode for 30-60 seconds to get to a cliffhanger moment.

An average 18 page chapter (counting title page) takes about 8 minutes to showcase in animation... a little longer if there's a lot of talking, (common in One Piece, less in Dragon Ball) a lot less if there's a lot of action.

Should have had 3 chapters an episode no problem for *most* of it... 2 if it was a talky one with a lot of exposition. (The Upwards max of 2 chapters per episode would be 160 episodes which is about what they're hitting... but that's still leaving a lot of padding per episode, including some terrible filler like Bulma and the frog Ginyu.

The original anime managed 291 episodes based on 325 manga chapters. That's just ridiculous. Kai is going to clock around 160 when its done, which is a lot better ... but still not great. Cutting 130 episodes SOUNDS amazing, but a huge chunk of that is largely gained from cutting the whole-cloth filler episodes like Gohan and the robot, children in space, Bulma and the crabs, and Garlic Jr.... rather than tweaking the pacing of the main material.

Hey, I actually like Faulconer's music. I was actually just about to post that the only thing I prefer in the dub is the music.

Faulconer can be quite corny, and it's most certainly not the most high-quality music ever, but it did the job. It managed to set a mood, a slightly different mood than the original Japanese DBZ music set, but still a good mood. I think I prefered the mood of Faulconer's music over the mood of the Japanese music.

All by all I think the mixture of rock and trance worked quite well for Dragon Ball Z.

This is my favorite Bruce Faulconer track:

If there was an option to watch DBZ with the original Japanese voices but  with Bruce Faulconer's music, I would definitely watch that.

I still think it's dumb that Dragon Ball is the only dub still worshipped by 24 year old manboys who otherwise only watch subs.

I just noticed this. My feelings are now hurt. You have made an eternal enemy, Geth. Be afraid, be very afraid.

At least a few of his tracks sounded kinda neat in 16-bit form for the Legacy of Goku trilogy.

What the Japanese score does best is set the atmosphere. Not every scene in DBZ is "WHOA WHAT AN INTENSE FIGHT". The Falconer score just plays nonstop "hardcore" music that most of the time, does not fit with the scene in question.

Kikuchi knew what fit the series better.

That is not true at all. You need to rewatch the DBZ dub series son.

Also, it's Faulconer, not Falconer. ;)

Speaking about anime music: Which animes have the best music in your opinion?

My favorite anime OSTs are:

1. One Piece (my favorite track)
2. Fairy Tail (my favorite track)
3. Naruto (as much as I hate the anime, the music was great, here's my favorite track)

No thanks, I already read Bleach for my self-torture.

And I don't care for his music, so I don't care about his name.

Favorite ost is Cowboy Bebop.

Whilst the Naruto OSTs are brilliant, nothing, flat out NOTHING compares to Cowboy Bebop and GitS:SAC in terms of anime series OSTs.

And for anime movies, Mononoke Hime and Sword of the Stranger take the cakes for me.

edit://
Some ear candy examples:

Cowboy Bebop - Tank!
Cowboy Bebop - Bad Dogs no Biscuit
Cowboy Bebop - Cat Blues
GitS:SAC -  Inner Universe
GitS:SAC - I Do
GitS:SAC - Torukia
Mononoke Hime - Main Theme
Mononoke Hime - Legend of A****aka
Sword of the Stranger - Ihojin no yaiba
Sword of the Stranger - Aganai no yuki

Were most of those movie OSTs not blocked for me, I'd have given you some more.

I also have to mention that overall the GitS:SAC OSTs hold a very dear spot in my musical collection, they are just that good. Whenever I am reading something, those are playing in the background.

Damn, I totally forgot about Bebop. That anime had f*cking FANTASTIC music.

But yeah, the Naruto music is great, too bad the anime/manga isn't. :P

When we consider anime movies, I think Steamboy deserves a thumbs-up. That anime had superb music.

This song is without a doubt one of the most epic anime movie songs ever made:

Also, I'm getting f*cking tired of One Piece's slow pacing these days (anime). I think I'll leave the anime for what it is for now, and focus on the One Piece manga only. At least the manga still has proper pacing. The One Piece anime seriously needs a speedup, it's just waaaaaaaay to slow right now.

Who else thinks the One Piece anime is getting worse these days?

As you know, Impel Down is where I gave up on it.

The pacing has been way too awful for the last few years.

Repost because It took some time to find the youtube videos that actually work for me, duh. Also, Major lol at BSN censoring ASHlTAKA's name.

I also recommend listeing to Ihojin no yaiba when you have decent speakers/headset, because those drums really work magic when you have some bass in your system. That's some true grandeur for your ears right there.

Had never even heard of Hidan no Aria before. I haven't kept up with anime at all in recent years. I never watched much anime actually, mostly kept to the few shows that somehow managed to grab my attention either with a plot summary or their visuals.

I read even less manga. Out of the few I've read, the only ones I'd recommend would be Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, Aqua/Aria and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou

Edited because of a very dumb typo

Not my kind. How do I say this (really having trouble expressing that, so take what follows with a grain of salt, it's merely a rough outline) ... it's too soft. If you compared my linked I Do, you will hear that the soft, melodic tone and the vocals are intersected with more ... dense instrumentations. Pure soft melodies just appear boring to me, flat for lack of a better word.

I can enjoy more intense music as well. Most of my playlist is actually Metal, ranging from Death/Black metal to Symphonic Rock-Metal.

I also really enjoy orchestral music. Joe Hisashi's compositions for Miyasaki's movies are absolutely delightful, and the Sword of the Stranger pieces you posted are also very enjoyable. The GITS and Cowboy Bepop ones are good too, but not the kind of stuff I'd listen to in my free time.

One of the reason I enjoy Aria's soundtrack so much is probably because it's actually my favorite anime. Hearing its music, I can't help but think about the anime. But that last song, Nanairo no Sora o, is on a whole other level. Makes me tear up everytime I hear it.

I didn't mean intense music. I just meant it was too soft. It was all high pitches tunes, always dancing around the same octave (don't know if that actually is true, I am just emphasizing my point). I require a minimum level of variety in every piece or I get bored listening to it.

Oh, and if you haven't seen Sword of the Stranger yet, do it. Easily one of the best anime around you can see.

I came across this today, dated for release some time in July. Looks like it might interest a few of you~

"Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei"

"A group of 15 elite high school students are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you'll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?"

Starting with Ao no Excorcist right now. First episode looks very promising.

Awesome music too and you know that when you got a quality OST, the anime can't be bad!
