Yeah no. It's not that type of series, it's trash.

The only reason the anime is getting a bad rap, is because fanboys hate the funky animation style they are going for. lol Since you know, the manga was great and everything!

Aku No Hana looks like **** and the cast sounds half Dead. All I have to say on it. Plus I'm watching like..12 other shows that are airing right now I think.

Well, from my recently finished shows - Psycho Pass has a great soundtrack that's highly pleasurable to listen to all by itself. Normally I just like the animation and music in unison but Psycho Pass' one is an exception. Dragon Ball (z) was also really fitting. Though they should have freshened it up more often.

As to all-time favorites... it's the same as my overall favorites really. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent and FLCL. In any order. Honorable mentions go to GITS 1995 movie, Clannad, Baccano!, Ergo Proxy, Gantz, Hachimitsu to Clover, Death Note, Asatte no Houkou, Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei, .hack/SIGN, Ghost Hound, Air Gear.

Edit: after seeing some outtakes from the manga I cannot stand by my opinion which was formed by one episode of the anime...

Original post (which is aimed only at the first of the anime... though I'm really hesitant of it as of now): Aku no Hana is certainly not about many metaphors aside the obvious "flower of evil" stuff (though if you ask me, that's a pretty powerful metaphor as is). It's more of a real beautiful, maybe somewhat more introverted and sighful look on things. Certainly not the usual ADD or fun stuff Japanese do like lately. I really like the voice-acting and art style. More of a high-art, maybe realistic approach. Overall it's not for everyone, but I'm certain it easily could be given some tolerance of or interest in the "strange ways of theworld/life/people".

Oh damn. I now saw some of the manga. Pretty worthless and trite. I hope they are redoing it all for the anime. As in, from scratch - as they've thankfully done with the art...

edit: oh god no it really does seem trashy... How (and more importantly, why) in hell's do they produce animes that immediately appeal, out of what seems to be junk?

(which wasn't a change of heart really.. just that the manga being a real different beast left me confused)

I've looked at the manga and while its not steller its much better than the show. Maybe I like pretty colors

Then again I never liked the more strange animation shows. And the character voices just seemed flat and lifeless, nvm the rape face dude.

Well, yeah, I'm quite a bit confused right now. I already recommended the show to many acquaintances who would not like that kind of manga... Yet some of them will probably read it.

Didn't read it proper myself though. Just saw a scene that has something to do with rape, and some of the first chapter - which is nothing like the show really.

As to shows with pretty colors - they're ok. Just that I'm really really tired of 'em.

From what I seen over on MAL the common view is when seen side by side the Manga is better. Not by much. Least its art work is.

Yes and if you read the manga first that would be an issue I'm sure.

Ehh least make it look half nice. Reminds me of a huge ****** off post that was going on. That ugly ass girl with the redish brown hair looks MUCH nicer in the Manga. Why they didn't just copy the manga art is beyond me.

Nah, it does have a funky style of its own. It's rough and sketchy realism, with beauty-details, really does its stuff well (it's sketchy and rough as by anime standards... which means it's still smooth and resembles impressionism more than realism per se). Yet even though I love that art-style - I cannot but wonder why they went on to change the original completely. It just doesn't make sense. Why not make such an anime out of a work that's... actually similar in what it tries. This is all so very darn confusing... :/

From what I heard the head artist on the project was a fan of some European Painter that did surealism work and he wanted that as his inspiration. There is a topic on it over at MAL I'll dig it up later, common view of his time was his art sucked lulz. Funny how history repeats.

I loved it, but the ending to the series seemed a bit abrupt... or at least, it still felt like it could of been longer, IMO.
