Apart for some questionable changes, it is still a solid anime on its own. It may not go down into hall of fame for best adaptation, but saying that it has fallen into the pit of doom is just silly.

An episode with a lot of good and a lot of stuff I'm conflicted about. First and foremost the pacing has become very weird and after last weeks very rushed episode it needed to quickly return to the pacing it had in the past and this weeks episode don't do that and it don't have that many episodes left to get everything in order. It's not too late but where there once were no concerns there are now some.

I love Lancer, not nearly as much as Medea but the scene with him interfering with Shinji being a creep cracked me up. That was just spot on and easily my favorite part of the episode. Good to see Kirei getting to be part of the story once again. Really enjoyed this part in the VN due to him being a very fascinating character that upset the status quo like none else.

This weeks episode did have EMIYA playing so at least I now know that Ufotable is aware of its existance. Now they only need to use it in the right scenes and not repeat the graveyard failure from a few weeks ago. Get your act together Ufotable!

A slow episode, without much actually happening but still significant in filling some characterization for several members.

 

The clash of conflicting ideals between Saber and Archer was splendid for several reasons; managing to both further characterize Saber and Archer, in addition to their interactions reflecting upon Shirou in quite a meaningful way. What makes the scene so powerful is how stark of a contrast they both are to Shirou and how they both carry similarities to each other. Shirou's belief is a borrowed one, something that he dutifully decided to inherit from Kiritsugu, without ever really knowing what Kiri's ideals truly entailed. Throughout the show Shirou has struggled with his ideals right from the beginning of the show, with Archer being an active member to repeatedly challenge it and pointing out how it will only bring him despair and regret. Both Saber and Archer are individuals who upheld solid ethical views in their lives and both suffered in the process. They both regret what they did, and seek to atone for their sins in their own ways.

 

However, while Archer is the ghost of Shirou's future and a direct representation of what he might become, and Saber is the embodiment of Shirou's ideals, Shirou is someone who has committed himself to never regret his actions--which is something he brought forward in Episode 13. Even though he doesn't understand his beliefs, he is determined to the core that it is still something worthwhile. As he has stated himself, as flawed as it might be, it is clear that to him his ideals are what brings him fulfillment in life and is something that he sees worth pursuing. He silently listened to both Archer and Saber's exchange, and has now his mind is completely resolved on what he is fighting for. He has accepted whatever fate it might bring him, along with the consequences.

 

Lancer's scenes were both hilarious and tragic. How he acted towards Shinji and his smug attitude towards Rin made me laugh, and his death came as a shock to me. For a moment I actually thought Rin would be the one to die, so it was an interesting twist to see Cu go down in a similar fashion as Diarmuid. I finally understand the full extent of Class Lancer's infamous E ranked Luck. It is certainly sorrowful, since he added a nice touch of warmth to such a cold conflict. Was nice to see Kirei reveal his true identity to Rin, and what role he actually played in the previous war. I must admit, a part of me smiled in how confidently he delivers his line when he announced that it was he who killed her father. Will be intriguing to see what Kirei has in store, now that he has entered the ring (officially).

 

And of course, next episode will certainly be worth its fair share of gold (or blades).

Personally, I have alot of issues with this episode outside the scene with Cu and EMIYA theme at the end. Shoehorning Saber stuff that frankly killed the pacing(because this scene was not written with these additions in mind so this stuff feels waaay too out of place, it's ep12 hostage scene all over again)  and the unnecessary changes to Archers past along with it being explored in too much depth(along with stuff from Fate/Extra Archer being used) just killed it for me.

 

I don't think Ufotable got the memo that SN Archer and Fate/Extra Archer don't have the same past.

Quite frankly, I didn't find Saber's involvement to kill the pacing at all. It fitted the context nicely, since it both fleshed out her as a character further and strengthened the exchange between Archer and her, making it more fulfilling. 

 

Can't speak of Archer's past and changes made there, but I personally have a clear view of his character now and how it resonates to Shirou (I also liked that his dialogue was similar to what the Grail brought forward towards Kiritsugu in Fate Zero, which was just awesome!)

 

EDIT: Considering all these changes that they've made along the way, I guess one could say that as an adaptation Ufotable has done an adequate job at best, but as an animated production in the TV industry, it has succeeded in taking key essentials when it comes to filmmaking to make it more than just good.

The pacing already felt a bit off since last week and while I don't think this episode made it worse it didn't get things back on track either which is a shame considering the fact that the show don't have unlimited amounts of episodes left to work with. 

 

The Saber stuff.. Don't care, it's there for the people that has not read the VN and while as a VN reader I'd love if "other" things got those seconds it's an adaptation that need to cater to more than the crowd that I'm part off. This is one of the main struggles an adaptation deal with. Is it an adaptation for the previous fans or the new or will it try to reach both camps and Ufotable clearly do try to reach both with.. varying results. As a show I still consider UBW great but as an adaptation it's decent which is not a surprise given how insanely difficult it is to be both awesome as a show and adaptation.

Hey everybody, I am getting ready to follow Puddi's suggestion and check out Nagi no Asukara and I was wondering if Kissanime got over its Adult Friend Finder nonsense before I click on the site and risk getting a virus. If not, I'll just watch it on Crunchy Roll, but I prefer Kissanime because it doesn't have advertisements that cut in during the show.

Good Fate episode.

I enjoyed it per usual, and the characterization, at least to me, was pretty well done. I like how Saber contrasted Archer in that Saber is filled with guilt and Archer feels deep regret. I was really struck by the scene where Shiro is looking up towards the grail and asking for a chance to become a Guardian. It heavily echoed the later scene where we saw Saber reaching out, on the bloodstained battlefield, to what is presumably the Grail.

 

It was a very ideologically heavy episode. While that area is not normally my forte, this is one aspect I always like seeing explored in Fate.

 

In regards to Archer's past, damn, that is so effed up. He effectively became the janitor for humanity and pretty much a drone to carry out the orders of the Masters that summoned him. It became his duty to kill, kill, and kill. I really liked seeing him forced to use his abilities on so many different people. I truly can see how that could seriously warp a person's view of the world.

 

To that end, where does that leave Shiro? I keep thinking to last week, where Rin asked something of Archer. Something along the lines of "where the people who were close to you and why didn't they try to help you?" As a result, I think Shiro has already changed the fate that was destined for him, the hell that Archer was forced to inhabit. The fact that he had Rin, this present universe Rin, to smack some sense into him, could have been the defining change that altered his world view, or at least lessened the consequences of what could later befall him in life. The way that Archer spoke made me feel like he had truly found himself to be utterly alone in his desolation, as result of either not keeping close to those who cared for him, or that they had possibly even died, which deepened the hole that he had dug for himself. At its most base, I feel like Archer is just hurting. The betrayal of his ideals wounded him so deeply, that his only recompense would be to prevent his ever becoming a Guardian and to save both himself, and this current Shiro, the pain that could destroy him.

Thanks for the offer, but there is no way I could commit to more than 4 (5 at best) hours of watching in a 48 hour span, so it'd just go to waste. 

It's been the exact same with me. I've kept up with the thread, but I haven't really had anything to post.
