I never really watched or played any anime or anime games. But I recently just finished Valkyria Chronicles and I have lost track of how many times the game annoyed me and drove me up the wall. (Doesn't help the English voice acting deliveries were quite awkward).

 

THAT SAID: There were so many tiny bits and pieces in the game that I really enjoyed. Especially the end-credits bit with

the whole segment was so well directed and it nearly made me feel choked up.

 

Since this is an anime thread, I was wondering if anyone else knows any other anime that does something like this (or better)? I tried looking before but I often get stuff that includes waaaay too much bikinis and other nonsense.

 

Valkyria Chronicles is pretty exceptional in my opinion in that respect.

 

The best anime as far as that goes are like kind of classical sorts of animes(older in general) such as...

 

Twelve Kingdoms

Scrapped Princess

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (Just an OVA so easy to watch)

All Miyazaki movies: (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, etc)

Haibane Renmei

 

Gothic dark fantasy like Berserk and Claymore are kind of in that category although honestly they get pretty tentacly at times.

 

Hunter X Hunter (possibly also Yu Yu Hakusho) aren't really high on fan service so much, but they're high on shoneny juice which I personally think is a different problem.

 

If you want experiences similar to Valkyria Chronicles you'll probably be better off sticking with other JRPGs or ARPGs like Shadow Hearts or Suikoden or something though (possibly even Zelda). If you were truly masochistic and wanted to go back in time you could play the Lufia series (1 and 2) which is an SNES JRPG series. Again though most of these things are older though.

 

As far as recent examples I think the best example is probably Attack on Titan. As far as games go probably something like the Souls series or Dragon's Dogma.

I love Ataraxia but it really wouldn't work that well in anime format.

In other news, I finally started reading this and even though I'm only a few chapters in I'm already digging the plot and and atmosphere.

Yeah, I'm certain after the success of Garden of Sinners and Zero Ufotable has certainly put itself as a major anime company when it comes to quality entertainment.

Unless any major changes are made within years to come, I'd expect some great stuff from them (at least animation wise)

A slow episode, without much actually happening but still significant in filling some characterization for several members.

 

The clash of conflicting ideals between Saber and Archer was splendid for several reasons; managing to both further characterize Saber and Archer, in addition to their interactions reflecting upon Shirou in quite a meaningful way. What makes the scene so powerful is how stark of a contrast they both are to Shirou and how they both carry similarities to each other. Shirou's belief is a borrowed one, something that he dutifully decided to inherit from Kiritsugu, without ever really knowing what Kiri's ideals truly entailed. Throughout the show Shirou has struggled with his ideals right from the beginning of the show, with Archer being an active member to repeatedly challenge it and pointing out how it will only bring him despair and regret. Both Saber and Archer are individuals who upheld solid ethical views in their lives and both suffered in the process. They both regret what they did, and seek to atone for their sins in their own ways.

 

However, while Archer is the ghost of Shirou's future and a direct representation of what he might become, and Saber is the embodiment of Shirou's ideals, Shirou is someone who has committed himself to never regret his actions--which is something he brought forward in Episode 13. Even though he doesn't understand his beliefs, he is determined to the core that it is still something worthwhile. As he has stated himself, as flawed as it might be, it is clear that to him his ideals are what brings him fulfillment in life and is something that he sees worth pursuing. He silently listened to both Archer and Saber's exchange, and has now his mind is completely resolved on what he is fighting for. He has accepted whatever fate it might bring him, along with the consequences.

 

Lancer's scenes were both hilarious and tragic. How he acted towards Shinji and his smug attitude towards Rin made me laugh, and his death came as a shock to me. For a moment I actually thought Rin would be the one to die, so it was an interesting twist to see Cu go down in a similar fashion as Diarmuid. I finally understand the full extent of Class Lancer's infamous E ranked Luck. It is certainly sorrowful, since he added a nice touch of warmth to such a cold conflict. Was nice to see Kirei reveal his true identity to Rin, and what role he actually played in the previous war. I must admit, a part of me smiled in how confidently he delivers his line when he announced that it was he who killed her father. Will be intriguing to see what Kirei has in store, now that he has entered the ring (officially).

 

And of course, next episode will certainly be worth its fair share of gold (or blades).

 

The less we see of Shirou, the better.

He knows what awaits him, he knows he won't accomplish anything and he still spouts "I wont' regret it!"

Newsflash: people have regrets. It is normal.

Insisting on pointless martyrdom is idiotic.

He desperately wants to be a Hero of Justice (even 10-year olds would be ashamed of saying that), despite not knowing how or what it entails, and realizing his ideal is unattainable.

He also wants to be one so bad that he NEEDS evil to fight (see Caster - he hates her guts despite her trying her best to not kill anyone and sparing him and Rin multiple times)

 

Archer is also being an idiot, since all he has to do it tell Shirou to NOT make a deal. But given how stupid Shirou is, he would probably make it anyway.

He also over-complicates things (could have killed Shirou and Caster a dozen times, and he laughably failed to kill him the first time. Incompetence.)

 

Both are pushing things to extermees, but at least I can understand Archer, since he is stuck in eternal hell.

Shirou is just an idiot.

The Saber stuff.. Don't care, it's there for the people that has not read the VN and while as a VN reader I'd love if "other" things got those seconds it's an adaptation that need to cater to more than the crowd that I'm part off.

You want to know something lotion? No grail war has been created by magicians, every single one has been created by a group powerful magus.So yeah, this is consistent with what is shown and known.

 

The only known time a magician even supervised it was the the creation of the Fuyuki cup, and he didn't even do anything. He was just there to supervise one of his students.

 

Magus. Magi. Magicians. Whatever. I know they have different level of magical knowledge, but it's beside the point.

It has been said that modern magic users are far less capable than old ones (kinda like how no sword can match Ea).

 

So a bunch of mages/magi decided to get together and make a wish-granting device (this somehow never occurred to the older spellcasters). And they decided to make a most  convoluted and user-unfriendly one.

This device (the Grail) would summon 7 Heroic Spirits (which were never summed before as far I understand, so would anyone even know they existed and so on..) and have 7 magi fight to the death for the wish.

WHY?

Why not just pump the Grail with mana? Why not all have their turn for the wish? Why all this circus?

 

It would have been FAR better if the Grail was never explained. Sometimes a mistery is better than an explanation when that explanation is grade A excrement.

Yup, the grail is NOT wishing device. It's a sham, simply to lure people like Kiri to fight in it. This is why Rin, Illya and Shirou by default are already better then pretty much every past master. They don't believe the grails bs and they suspect something big.
