A lot of media in general tries to be "edgy"

Hm that's a good point, it's not really limited to anime. It seems to be especially common in anime (also Japanese stuff generally) right now though.

Watching When Marnie Was There now. Ghibli film so, you know.

Sounds like something for me!

In seriousness though. Making something edgy to bring in kids is bad.

I feel like "edgy" is this weird idea that in order to be cool you need to have lots of sex or violence or something, because you know that's what most people do they **** and kill each other left and right, right? No.

It also just seems uniquely unsuited to Japan, which I've never thought of as this kind of super trendy on the cutting edge iPhone Galaxy Note 9000 place with super-piping hot sexy phone apps delivering the latest beats. I'm pretty sure thats South Korea....

Japan is like land of the Shinto shrine and cherry blossom paths through the forests.

And that's why their birth rate is going down.
And worst of all making Lisa the most prominent Simpson.

Well even assuming being edgy was a good thing or whatever they're not very good at it anyway (see injecting things randomly with sex or violence).

The only anime that was sort of recent "edgy" seeming that I kind of liked also was Elfen Lied probably, all the other ones... eh, even then I still prefer certain Ghibli movies over that.

It depends. Remember I was a Kid in the 2000s which was by and large the "Edgy" dark age. So I know what I'm talking about.

If it fits the tone of the show, and it's well written then there's nothing wrong with being more mature. See Batman The Animated Series.
But I'm also a desensitized maniac. So take that with a grain of salt.

No but I'm questioning what "mature" even means, I mean, what's something "edgy" you liked? (like in anime) I'd probably hate it to be honest, not because it was "trying to be more mature," but because every time I see that kind of thing I see all these "mature themes" are kind of just a crap facade to me for the most part.

I mean honestly I heard the DA developer call DA mature fantasy and ME kind of more T rated I'm like it's basically the opposite there. In fact whenever someone or something is going out of their way to call themselves "mature" or something that tells you all you need to know.

I don't care as long as the story is good, it just so happens most of the "ow the edge" stuff isn't good.

mmm yeah I think you have a warped view of modern Japan, lol.

It's as much still a land of that stuff as the US is Little House on the Prairie.

Eh I mean I don't really know anything for sure but someone I know who lived there for 3 years said it was a lot calmer than a lot of places, people weren't always in a rush to do this or that necessarily, more serene, etc, compared to for example other Asian countries, or especially the U.S.

I would edit to say "exclusively" the land super phone app land, it's pretty trendy at times but I think of the US and again something like SK as kind of superheated.

I suppose it depends on where in Japan you live, but I'm pretty sure Tokyo of all places, where pretty much all of the cultural exports we talk about here are born, is very much the trendy iPhone whatever-other-words-qualify-as-descriptors-to-you land that you think it isn't. Metropolitan Japan isn't much different from metropolitan Korea or metropolitan anywhere else for that matter.

Mature means it cuts the crap. Characters have gray morality and you can understand their sides of a conflict. And violence is presented properly without much fantastical stuff.

Marvels Daredevil
Fate/Zero
Cybersix
Triguns 2nd half
Gurren Laganns 2nd half
Dark Souls
90% of Gintamas story arcs & The Final Chapter
Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan
RoboCop (80s)
Star Wars Clone Wars (Season 3 onwards)
Heavens Feel
There's more. But I think I forgot where I'm goin with this...
Man, Clone Wars was a good show. I miss it so much.

Yeah, Gurren Lagann is one of the first things that come to mind when I think of non-fantastical violence.

Wait but how did we combine "edgy" with "mature?" I think that's a bit of a jump first of all. Er secondly a lot of that stuff is really old I think it was more about whether it's a recent desire to be edgy.

But whatever assuming these are franchises with goofy underpinnings that are trying to be "serious" and edgy.

Trigun, Gurren Lagann, and Gintama I just kinda disagree really, not much else to say. I'm not really sure how hard any of them try to be serious or mature necessarily, but I can't say any of them actually are any more serious or mature than something like Samurai X or Evangelion or even Gunbuster or Vampire Hunter D or other anime from earlier periods (are they all earlier, I don't know).

I mean, I like them more than most anime, but I don't think any of them stands out ultimately among other anime for trying to be mature or something. Yeah Wrath of Khan is ok-ish, Robocop is frankly just ridiculous to me sorry. Clone Wars haven't seen. I saw the Daredevil movie which (probably doesn't count for anything) but it was kinda lame I thought. Cybersix I read about she seems cool don't really know comics as well.

I agree on Dark Souls though, it tries to be "mature" and is relatively "mature."

It's funny you mention Fate/Zero because I was just making a point about that somewhere... it tries so hard to be mature that it consumes the substantial story elements and ends up worse off than Deen F/SN, which doesn't even bother at all. Yeah it's slick but where did everything else go?

That's the kind of phenomenon I find bothersome. I mean ultimately you either can raise the level of magnitude or you can't, but forcing it is worse than anything.

I don't think the average level of "edginess" of "maturity" in anime/comics has really improved at all over lets say the past 20 years, in all seriousness. A lot of it is still kinda the same substance. The impression that it is somehow edgy has increased, saying doesn't make it so though.

I forgot what I was doing around that point.

It's fine, not 100% sure what I'm doing either at this point. Honestly I thought you were going to throw out things like Tokyo Ghoul or Akame Ga Kill or Higurashi or something so I completely didn't expect that at all.

Eh yeah it's fine, honestly wasn't really expecting to think about it so much, I think I'm just thinking about how if I want some super edgy (or whatever) it's going to be from the US or SK or something. No matter how "edgy" or "mature" Japan gets it just feels like they will always trail behind, Japan (or... really whoever is making anime kind of stuff wherever they are), is cool to me not really when they push the limits or the outliers but make a satisfying harmonious thing in the middle somewhere. (Samurai X, FMA, GTO, whatever)

That's not to say they shouldn't try to be all things but I don't really seem them as getting very close I guess is my point, perhaps even going backwards in some instances. Like lets say... Tokyo Ghoul is about as edgy as Pokemon or something, it's a strictly superficial appeal to "edigness."

I mean isn't pretty much everyone's favorite anime here some older (or at least less edgy) thing? I'm sure there are some exceptions but it's been mostly LogH, or HxH, or maybe even GITS or something, or possibly Ghibli movies or whatever. PMMM is more recent and I guess where the edgy thing worked, but it's building off a base from 20 years ago (Sailor Moon),

Doesn't that make the point? Tiger and Bunny isn't edgy at all really.

Sorry I don't know if that was your point, your comments are pretty cryptic to me right now for some reason.

Also I should probably watch this the trailer is pretty hilarious.

It's mostly comedy yes.

But Barnaby and Lunatics backgrounds aren't...particularly happy...

You should watch it though. Great series.
