Basically 4Kids got the license to dub One Piece, but only knew the series was popular. Not what it was about (other than Pirates, and Pirates of the Caribbean were at their height at the time) or whom it was popular with (Teens).

As such they heavily censored the series more than they ever had before. Which I always found weird. Because TMNT and Funky Cops were broadcast fairly uncut in comparison to 4Kids' Anime jobs.

 

What money tho!?

That had the title of worst dub before One Piece.

 

The sending of Bellemere to the dungeon instead of being killed, cutting out Laboon and Little Garden made tons of plot holes, the endless horrible jokes and puns, bad voice acting, David Moo as Sanji and yeah characters also got changed too.

 

All this and more just made it so bad.

 

Tho it's funny as hell now with the Funi dub being around.
