No they weren't. The plot, while having same structure, is disjointed from the books, wherein certain events happen at different times during different places in a lot of scenes. Certain characters, most prominently Aragorn, Elrond and Gandalf were substantially altered from the books. Aragorn for example, is a badass in the movies, but lacks a lot of depth that the books touched upon and why he truly was the King to be, not just of being the heir. Glorifindel and Bombadil are never mentioned. And several plot threads were missing.

Two Towers was worse, since it changed and/or removed character development, major plot elements, which carried into return of the King. And don't get me started on themes being different from movies and books.

Compared to other books that have been adapted? Yes it is. Same in anime. UBW IS one of the worst adaptions I have ever seen in an anime, hardly any better then DEEN in my eyes . It's only better then DEEN as a anime because it can still be responsibly enjoyed without knowing the source for it's fight scenes and other stuff.

I have a different take on adaptations. I separate the movie/show from the source material in my mind because I know they will never be the same or close making it easy for me to not get mad at it because it didn't do "blah blah" right. People put too high expectations into this type of thing. Just accept it for what it is. They will never be the same.

Anyway, that was a rather disappointing episode. Sex scenes aside, what I found to be the most gripping was that the show reverted to its "this is not Saber's route", especially since there has been an actual build up for Saber on the sideline of the primary plot. I was expecting her to now reflect upon her identity with the revelation of the Grail and what has transpired, and have Shirou and Rin ask Saber about her past involvement in the previous war, but there was nothing of the sort. Instead it decided to leave Shirou (and the audience) clueless and just have Saber be content with everything. Missed opportunity right there, since I don't see this fitting into the last two episodes.

 

The intimacy in Rin's room was not as bad as I expected, though still a bit disjointed. The build up with their bickering was cute and silly, which is basically how their relationship has been during moments like these. It is evident that the both have feelings for one another, and they are both too stubborn and / or shy to actually take that first step. Though they have been dancing this little game of theirs for the entirety of the show, so was little disappointed that it didn't consume here since I found it to be the most appropriate of times. But then again, both Rin and Shirou showed their determination, so one can always argue that neither of them feel the need for "our last moments" speeches and such. Would have still been nice, but there is time for it to come properly into fruition.   

 

I really don't see why the show feels the need to use sperm dolphins. Yes yes, I know there is symbolism to be found in it that correlates to some extent certain themes that the story takes up, but why the heck are they used as a substitute for sex? This is stuff you use for kids shows. At least it had a dream scene which showed that even Rin felt a bit of admiration for Shirou, and that it wasn't simple Shirou who felt such, as he brought up in Ep 13, so that was nice. Still though, I was left more confused over what was exactly going on and just left me in a "sooo... did they even do it?"Lame.

I like how that dojo scene with Saber really added nothing, time they could have used so the meeting was not rushed as hell, or give the true purpose of that high jump scene (Chewin is only scratching the surface) This is why you don't show a scene that is only explained in another route in a anime....

 

And no Chewin, they didn't do it.

There's so very little to say about this episode. Disappointing for sure and almost all of it comes down to the sperm dolphins and the choice Ufotable made there. A kiss, something else, just.. not that. Otherwise it was a slow paced episode that had some cute and fun moments with Rin and Shirou. As with the VN I also here wish they'd move a bit more away from the super shy stage but it's their thing now so I can let that pass. I know I'll be pleased in the end anyways.

So.. hope the few remaining episodes can match up to the VN and give this unimpressive season a worthy finale.

For all my complaining the last two weeks FSN UBW the anime still manages to get some things right. Even if they changed some things in the Answer battle Anime only viewers still managed to understand what the whole event was trying to convey for Shirou's and Archer's character and the whole part with Aimer's Last Stardust was very well done.

 

They also did an amazing job with Episode 15. No matter how many times I watch that episode a part of me always breaks when I watch it, certainly the emotionally heaviest episode for me.

 

Well I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though it has some flaws as an adaptation it still is a good anime on it's own and I'm glad that people that haven't read the VN are enjoying it.

Yeah, Illya's goodbye was depressing  .

 

Combine that with Kirei mentioning how he will kill anyone in his way now that he became Kiritsugu to reach his goal and this is one of my favorite endings just because of how dark and disturbing it is.
