Let me put it this way - it's like suspension of disbelief.

While it doesn't make it impossible for people to be invested, it make it harder for most people and it does raise the necessary treshold. Raising it does no service to anyone.

Heck, emotions can be conveyed in many way. One can simply have the words "sad" float above a character too

And, in reverse, just because you can enjoy something, doesn't mean it's normal or that most people will experience the same.

 

To be fair, your 'suspension of disbelief' is a pretty hard to deal with. The limits where most people find a 'okay that's enough' are waaaay beyond yours.

I think the funeral of the Merry was rather poignant in terms of how it represents the best values of eastern animation -- The reliance of audio, whether it be silence or knowing exactly when to have appropriate audio play to create a state of being for the viewer to embrace. It was sad because of how it properly reflected the sadness of each crew member in such a way that it fits their disposition. It's clear to anyone that all of them are immensely upset but they each show it differently. One could argue that Merry having a soul is perhaps a tad bit on the odd and quirky end, but it was already implied a long time before that actual part that the ship seemingly had a soul of its own. Souls is an interesting recurring trope for Japanese animations, or maybe the term 'anthropomorphism' would be more appropriate -- It's the concept of granting human characteristics, motivations, strictly speaking; a soul, to inanimate objects like plants or animals. Something Hans Christian Andersen was particularly adapt at doing in his fairy-tales

It's always been the heart of a lot of anime though, where key words like say 'Souls' or 'after life' perchance relating to hinduism or Japanese myth is heavily emphasized in fictional works.

Nowadays the Japanese have broadened personification builds on this tradition with manga-style characters that personify everything from cities and neighborhoods to local landmarks, railway lines, and even computer operating systems. The cast would assist in bringing life to the image of what a place, or an object, has in the popular mind, with physical features and a personality to match.

In regards to One Piece it worked really, really well, especially in the anime, with the funeral of the Merry I think.

I don't read comic books anymore, japanese or not, so the anime I suppose -- I was merely commenting since I had watched it already and people were talking about it.

Well I read the manga.

 

Then I take breaks.

 

Then I read it again for 100 chapters or so.

 

One Piece is awesome.

I kind of assumed OP would be = to Bleach and Naruto but I've heard too many people I trust gush about it that I do believe it's better now. I just need to focus myself and actually sit down to start reading it again.
