People like us who already delve into niche series or the likes have plenty with similar attributes to compare it too where it doesn't look as favourable, but if you do compare it with other mainstream western-release anime, i.e. Naruto, Bleach (those are exactly the void that SnK filled out), it landed like a bomb.

 

Let's not forget that SnK is as popular as it is because it does have a huge following from the audiences that don't have TBs worth of anime libraries on their PCs or stacks of Blurays in their rooms, let alone would know what a Visual Novel is.

Just because it is mainstream in the west does not mean it's simplicity, overuse of cliches, having a by the books generic shounen PC and horrid pacing can not be criticized.

And I didn't mean that it couldn't. I'm just putting into perspective that a majority of SnK's following don't criticize it's shortcomings because they likely never happened to see something better than it and that Snk is definately a step up from other popular western release anime.
