Finished Watching Squid Girl (Ika Musume) last week. Long time since I watched a fun anime (fighting animes aren't really my thing :3) , and this one's cuteness level goes up to eleven XD

I've been watching One Piece lately.

Luffy sometimes just makes me really angry, but overall the series would've been one I would've enjoyed had I the time to devote to watching more then one episode every few weeks back when it started.

I don't hate Luffy though. But God Almighty does he sometimes act like an idiot -- not a lot, just occasionally. And I don't mean that he is an idiot, but there are times where he has moments that just seem idiotic.

But he's definitely awesome.

Being an idiot, adds to his charm.=]

But yeah that is not all there is to him, he has great camaraderie with his crew and he takes no sh!t from anything or anyone.

So anyway what episode are you at?

25 I think. I took a break from watching the series, but I've got the last episode I was on in my favorites tab so I know where to pick up again.

Cowboy Beebop. Do watch it. Just be warned that it's sorta episodic in nature and some episodes are hit-and-miss. There are two or three episodes that are really...weird. The reat are great.

I like a good monster-of-the-week show. It's a very strong format, as long as it's done right, and it's not mutually exclusive from an ongoing storyline. (Although trying to turn one into the other can be a real problem.)

What I like about Bebop is that most of the story you need to know kind of seeps in around the edges, even if it's not a "big plot" episode. Without watching every episode, for example, it becomes clear that Spike has a violent past he's been running from and that he hasn't emotionally come to grips with. Or that Faye has reasons for the things she does, and for her general refusal to trust people - she's just not particularly interested in sharing.

Me too. Character driven episodic shows with loose overarching plot is what works best for a television series.

Personally however, I think Champloo did a far better job at it then Bebop. They're both good though.

^^ Yeah, it is quite confusing - but it'll clear up by "half-the-episodes" mark. Like most anime does.

Just now I found an interesting title. Gilgamesh.

I was originally put off by the overall low score on database-sites, but as for episode one, it's definitely great. I haven't seen originally artistic stuff in anime for quite some time.

Btw, this is what I was talking about when going on about anime/manga that "throws me in a life" without much explanation, for me to fill the gaps myself. It doesn't feel it caters to the low-end crowd.

Episode 25? the one where Sanji fights Pearl, yeah that's an okay episode in a very good arc.

Are you watching it on the Funimation stream or their DVDs?

I've been watching them on a website called justdubs.net. I think it's the original dub, because IIRC there are two dubbed versions.

From what I can tell, they've got every episode in the series and ignoring the occasional buffering issue I can easily watch them.

Here's the thing if you are watching the original dub by 4Kids, I am going to help you by telling you this.

Do. Not. Watch. It.

The 4Kids One Piece dub is the worst anime dub in the history of anime dubs. From killing the characters(Luffy, Usopp, Sanji, every bad guy and more) to edits that make no sense(no one dies they only get taken to the dungeon) and then to make it worst, they were giving characters somewhat racist/stereotype voices(if she has a cowboy hat, she must be from Texas!). Also they got rid of some story arcs, that made some really bad plot holes cuz of that.

Here if you want to watch a dub, watch Funimation's dub.

http://www.onepieceo...os.aspx?&v=2181

Because unlike 4Kids, they know what they are doing. Hope that helps.

And once more, the edits 4kids did really made no sense.

From this.

Oh, no in that case I've been watching the Funimation one. It's got actual guns pointed at people -- that episode definitely had one -- and not spring-loaded hammerboot thingies.

I remember reading that in a different episode Usopp's friend -- the one that was in a depression -- points a gun at Kuro, but in a different dub it was something else.

The one I'm watching had a gun used in that episode.

That's great to hear then.

No one should have to go through David Moo's bad voice acting.

Well yeah, Vale understands Sanji's character and he is a good voice actor, it's just really hard to compare to Hiroaki Hirata.

Even if the subs are meh(lol that's not my point), you can tell Hirata puts a ton of emotion into his acting.

So yeah Hiroaki Hirata>>>Eric Vale>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>David Moo.=]

Even though I prefer the english dub of most anime I've always liked that the original Japanese sounds less forced with emotional scenes. I guess "sounds more believable" is what I'm trying to say actually.

I just watched the episode that Sanji scene was a part of. The Baratie arc was pretty good.

I have to say, Nami is probably my favorite character of the crew. It's either her, Roronoa Zoro, or Sanji.

Japanese actors and voice actors, the good ones that is, try to come off natural, even in silly cartoons or Tokusatsu. You can see what I am talking about if you ever watch the first Godzilla movie, the original version I mean.

@The Ethereal Writer Yeah I like the full cast a lot, but overall I like Luffy best but only because he plays off the rest of the cast really well.

I also really do love Nami even if she is more of a fanservice character nowadays, she still is cool and a great person though. Sanji nowadays is not as cool as he first was, but you are still a ways off from his "I NEED LADY!" character.=] Zoro is a badass nuff said.

^^ Personally, I think that's the most important thing to have in mind when talking to a person who "hates" anime.

In such situations I ask myself whether
1. Is he/she lazy enough to not bother with subs (or whatever other reason you might think for this - either way I view this as a negative), in which case I will refrain myself from recommendations (I hate dubs that much that I'd never recommend them), or try to persuade the person to try handling subs (as it often pays off immensely, intellectually); or
2. start talking about how his/her view can very possibly be influenced by a dub.

I know lots of people who hate anime because of the dubs (and they've not watched the originals). I'd probably hate it myself, or at least wouldn't be interested, at all, if it were in English in the likeness of common dubs (there's only very few exceptions).

Not to say the person hating dubs better or anything - but I still hold the view that originals are so. And understand fully those who dismiss anime based on the voice acting.
As said, I would do so myself, if I weren't informed of subs' qualities and would have dissed Japanese for some unknown reason.

That's fine and all but like I have said in the past, it's hard to find a bad anime dub nowadays.(but you can still find bad fansubs everywhere...)

I mean, we are way past the days of 4kids and Nelvana.

Any good voice actor can make the character real, Japanese or not.

And most dub actors, do voice act in American cartoons already, so eroeru if these people are into animation from the get go, they should not have a problem with the voice acting.

But if these people are not into animation from the start, they will say anything to get out of watching it. Like saying the dub voice acting is "bad" or them saying reading subs is too "hard" and my favorite "Anime is for kids"(they are right somewhat).

The point is people like what they like and hate what they hate, it is still good if you can help them find new likes, but if they do not care for subs and you want to get them into anime, you should show them the great dubs then. I mean look at me I do not care for FMA in Japanese much but the dub? The dub is great! and a lot of people think the same as I do about it, it just works better in English.

If you don't want to go it that way, just tell the person they are dumb for not wanting to read subs...=]

Just finished watching Durarara...

I'm surprised how well it works, despite the strange plot.
And damn, how I want to see Izaya get his face smashed in by Shizuo.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm still amazed though how much more "for kids" I find the dubs, whether good or not. It's not only that it's more simple to get into, it's also that the english-speaking voice-acting tone is often enough associated with cartoons that are for kids. And we (I) often cannot get over that association. It doesn't help that it's paradigmatically over-dramatic.

@Lotion
Durarara is pretty well done, but I always compared it to Baccano! and hence thought somewhat worse of it. You've seen Baccano!?

Watch the dub of Cowboy Bebop or Baccano! or even some DC comics cartoon movies sometime, that will help you get over the very odd thought that the "english-speaking voice-acting tone" is for kids.:?

Most really bad dubs are of anime for kids to begin with, so that is most likely why you think that.

And something else, I like Trigun better in Japanese but when it comes to Wolfwood, Jeff Nimoy is the voice of the character for me. All the tones to his voice help, from when Wolfwood is being silly to when he is being mature and serious, it alll works. His last episode always makes me cry, not just because I like Wolfwood as a character but because Nimoy made him such a great character.;)
