I sat through the 2003 series of Fullmetal Alchemist, and I'm on episode 6 of Brotherhood. Brotherhood has been really good so far, but as of right now I prefer the 2003 series. I don't know why the 2003 series is so polarizing. I know the ending gets flak for

trying to tie in the fictional FMA universe to the real world and ending on a bittersweet and ambiguous note

, but I actually rather like the ending. I was hoping to see Conqueror of Shamballa before starting on Brotherhood, but I can't find it on any streaming services, and I refuse to torrent. I do prefer Father from Brotherhood as an antagonist over Dante in the original series, but the Homunculi are better, I feel, in the 2003 series (except for Gluttony, Gluttony is better in Brotherhood) from what I've read.

 

Overall, FMA is one of my favorite anime series. I even enjoyed the RPG games on the PS2 (even though the first one has a terrible difficulty curve in the latter half of the game and becomes Dark Souls, cast in the FMA fiction).

I've watched Brotherhood and about half of FMA and the things that stand out to me are 1) FMA has more filler 2) the secondary characters are less developed. I thought FMA was a pretty solid show but I also haven't found the motivation to finish it. I know FMA has a special place in Isi's heart.

I've watched Brotherhood and about half of FMA and the things that stand out to me are 1) FMA has more filler 2) the secondary characters are less developed. The filler in the 2003 series is less filler, and more the series branching away from the original manga, since the 2003 series started while the manga was still in its earlier stages. Only the first 15 to 20 episodes really follow the plot (albeit somewhat loosely), but it wildly diverges past that. As for the secondary characters, I would say it depends on the character in question. Rose, whose role is very minor in the manga/Brotherhood, is ascended to a major player in the original series toward the latter half of the show. Same goes for Shou Tucker.

 

edit: after watching through the Laboratory 5 arc in Brotherhood, I have to say I like it more in the 2003 series. The Slicer brothers are more developed, and Barry the Chopper is more entertaining to watch.

I will admit I'm very bias with FMA(2003) series as I didn't like that they diveraged from the manga(it annoys me alot when studios do it) and I just found Arakawa's story far more interesting, enjoyable and more memorable then what some random smuck at BONES did

Beating up all these video game characters with her paddle. It would be GLORIOUS. And hilarious. Just imagining it, I can taste the bitterness of the rabid smash fanbase getting angry that some random unrelated anime character took a spot that could have gone to something more relevant.

I'd never use another character again. Just her. Ara Ara ufufu-ing my way to victory.
