Now this is what I wanted to see! After two rather lackluster episodes--which served more as a build up to this one--I was getting scared that the climax would ultimately prove to be hollow and not deliver on certain accounts that I felt were critical. Well I am so glad to be proven wrong, since this is indeed a worthy climax to a series, since it brings the focal aspects of the show that it built up right from the beginning into a satisfying conclusion, and I couldn't be happier.

 

I argued in the episode before that I found Gilgamesh to be a rather lackluster of a villain. While I can see the "symbolical value" of him serving as the final antagonist, it isn't worth much if he doesn't serve a purpose aside from that; serving no further opposition to Shirou aside from being a threatening enemy on a physical level. Well I am glad that this didn't end up being the case, since right of the bat we have Gil reiterating the struggle that Shirou has faced up to this moment, who in turn confirms what it is he is fighting for. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, nor should it since the conclusion after all is a summary of the ideas and concepts that have been the driving factors within this show, which it does splendidly. Shirou has struggled throughout the show and through these challenges, they have managed to build upon Shirou's conviction, which has become a defining trait for him as a character. At this point in the show Shirou knows exactly who he is as an individual--he knows his strengths and his flaws, which proves to be a key reason as to why he manages to defeat the King of Heroes himself. Gilgamesh loathes characters like Shirou-- individuals who tries to exceed their stations in life, trying to be something they aren't "supposed" to be. In his eyes, highly idealistic people are inherently blind to life, since they refuse to accept the "ugliness" of the world and how flawed humanity is as a specifies, and thinking differently--like in Shirou's case--about "protecting everyone" is wishful thinking. Shirou proves to us, just as he did to Archer, that while that may be right to some extent, that doesn't make your beliefs weaker for it, especially if they are a borrowed one. Just like Archer brought up that Shirou's admiration for Kiritsugu was his reason for fighting was hollow, Gilgamesh tries to achieve the same outcome, that Shirou should just accept what he is and isn't. Gilgamesh, just like Archer, is being proven wrong, since what Shirou fights for in this state is not his admiration for his father, but what he thinks was the inherent ‘goodness’ of the act of salvation. Shirou is fully aware of the fact that his ideals can never become reality, but in his opinion that doesn't make them worthless, even if his ideals are "fake". 

 

And he is right. Ideals, whether they are borrowed ones, doesn't make them less valuable. It is important to understand them, know why they apply to your personal viewpoint in life, but simply because you held someone as a moral example and absorbed their view of life into your own, doesn't make you less of an individual in society. That is why the fight between Shirou and Gilgamesh becomes so powerful, since it gives the whole "real vs fake" a nice resolution and of course looking f*cking amazing while it does it! Seriously, when Shirou summoned his own version of the Reality Marble, proclaiming if Gil has enough swords at his disposal, later laying down the law on him while simultaneously having based Emiya soundtrack starting to play in the background, I had frikking goosebumps like I haven't had for a long time with a show! Glorious!

 

I have to say, I did love the different chant Shirou had when he summoned the Reality Marble. While I am certain there is a more of a direct translation to what exactly his words symbolizes, to me at least it sounded a lot more optimistic in nature compared to Archer's, which is a nice contrast that showcases their own personal values they have on life. Shirou's whole chant is basically one big summary of what he has experienced in his life (within the context of the show) and it is very fitting to see how the words reflects upon it and to outright hear the conclusions he has reached and see the consequences of his character development translate into something tangible, which is exactly what I wanted the show to do for Shirou since the beginning. The Marble is essentially a representation of Shirou's beliefs, and it acts as a nice way to showcase the difference between his ability and Gil's, e.g. in how plain all of Shirou's swords look, while Gil's are shining with golden light. And I just have to love Shirou's smugness in this confrontation, stating how "fake" the Reality Marble looks, but doesn't make it any more deadlier than Gil's ability, in addition to how Gil is a one-trick pony. Gilgamesh gradually losing his cool was oddly satisfying, and just witness how the pacing in the fight became faster and faster was epic! The musical score, the animation, the action, everything! I was at the edge of my seat through the whole sequence. It was also nice to see that Gil, even after being beaten to such a pulp, was able to state that the victory belongs to Shirou. Honestly, while I knew he respected strong individuals, I didn't expect him to go that far in such a state, so I commend him for it.

 

Archer's reveal came as a surprise. Perhaps a bit of an asspull, but it doesn't make the ending feel weaker on my part, since his involvement simply made the ending more happier, and it wasn't needed for the main characters to come on top (b/c Shirou would have cut off his arm and Saber would have used Excalibur either way). Would have made for a cool bittersweet ending, but I am content with how this ended. Plus seeing that Archer has become content with Shirou and himself is a nice send off for the character, since ultimately we get to see that he changed as well through the course of the series, further showcasing how much of an influence both Shirou and Archer ended up having for each other.

 

Speaking of being content, I am also happy with Saber. While I do think that she should have been involved a bit more, that Ufotable should have gone through with additions they had already made with her in the story, I am still satisfied enough by her role and development that we left off with her back with Zero. Saber fits into UBW thematically because her story is also one of idealism, which world view is similar to that of Shirou's. Her story is linked between the two shows, between Kiritsugu and Shirou, and the contrast she brings and evolution of her character is a nice addition, even though improvements could have been made. But considering her role is minimal at best in the VN, and I was never expecting Saber to have much of a role in the show, I am still pleased that Ufotable decided to add these aspects into the show. 

 

And that's basically it. Gonna be interesting what the epilogue has in store. I guess tying in a few loose ends and such, but it doesn't really matter that much since I am more than content with the entirety of what the show has done. Gonna wait until the last one of course before I start with the VN again.
