Sim likes mainstream anime just fine, but only if they are good.

I haven't watched Elfen Lied, SAO or HLP, but from what I have gathered, they suck.

Well, I haven't watched much Elfen lied, so I cannot say.

SAO's first arc was fine, then... fairies.... Kirito was a Gary-Sue or whatever you call it.

HLP doesn't suck, but isn't for everyone. Like I said, ecchi Harem. That turns off some people. It's a funny anime, and highly enjoyable. Even Liam said he heard it was genuinely good, which it is.

But I'm different. Everyone has different opinions. A friend of mine hates JoJo dearly and some of the other animes you guys watch, but we all have different tastes.

Thing is what counts as mainstream is kinda complicated so there is no real way of answering that. I mean is PMMM mainstream? What about Jojo?HunterxHunter or even Gintama? or do only massive shows like Naruto, Bleach, One piece, SAO and AOT count? It's hard to go off.

Perhaps I worded the question wrong. I kinda meant the massive shows like Naruto and SAO, but again, I was perhaps too general in the question.

Sure, there are factors like personal and cultural preferences that underlines something that you enjoy and define as good, and while I don't believe in the concept of true objectivity, it is still an ability to be able to come to a different conclusion of the quality of a show based on several aspects, despite if you enjoy the show in question.

One can appreciate a show's production values, a certain trait that you can identify with the characters, humor, etc, and be content that they are enough of a reason to your liking. While "limiting" one's view to such is just fine for you personally, that doesn't mean excluding parts that are important as well; like narrative structure, thematic elements, characterization, tone, setting, etc, and how well these aspects align with the central story that the show is trying to tell. Having an understanding of how these aspects work and the level of importance to the show in question makes it easier for you to distinguish whether the show is actually good in what it wants to tell, even if it may be to your liking.

I myself have plenty of shows and movies that I would give a low rating, or say that they suck, yet I wouldn't mind seeing them again since I found something that I was able to enjoy, despite their flaws. But just because I enjoyed them doesn't make them good.

I agree with Chewin. I mean I love the everliving **** out off Expelled from Paradise and when I'll get the BD I will definitely rewatch it multiple times every year but I'm not blind to it's flaws.

I finished Unlimited Blade Works, but by the end, all I could think was "what?" I mean maybe if I rewatched the whole series, the plot would make sense, but I suspect I'd have to read the VNs to accomplish that.

And Chewin is right. I feel the same about HLP, sure it's one of my favorite animes but I can point out it's flaws. I also know not everyone will like it. But before I jump on an anime I give it a chance.

And sometimes you enjoy them because they're so bad. Plenty of movies like this (The Room, Plan 9 from Outer Space and such)

That CGI isn't very encouraging.

What do you mean? That game looks super hype!

No it looks super stupid. I don't even know why it's a crossover.

I really need to get watching SU. It seems like it would be an easy one for me to get into and watch. Also all the anime references would make me smile so much :D

Yes you do. Though I've been saying that for a while now. :P It's kind of fascinating to chart how the series found its footing and it really is an excellent case of a series aimed at kids not overlooking the target audience's intelligence. Mind, it's not always super emotional, there are generally fun episodes too but the last two Steven bombs (aka where we get a new episode every day for a week) have become progressively more holy **** and I love it.

Do that! We got compleyely different views on the movie but someone should absolutely love it. Flaws and good sides is what made that movie what it is. That and pretty visuals

Watching remarkably bad shows is almost as much fun as watching genuinely good shows

Well something has to set the standards on how NOT to do things. Kind of why I get a kick out of reading Bleach still.

Exactly, and even really bad shows tend to have one thing going for them and in the midst of all that awful it's so much easier to notice it and remember it when good shows come around.

Sim.

I wonder.

Are you not fond of most mainstream anime? I'm not trying to start a war or anything. Just curious.

I believe you don't like Elfen Lied, you don't seem very fond of Sora No Otoshimono (HLP) and I'm guessing you don't like AoT and SAO.

Nah I like AoT. I think it's very good.

I make a post about its monthly chapters when it comes out.

I just mentioned HLP cos from what I've seen it looks like something I wouldn't touch with a 100 feet pole. It looks like it has every trope under the sun that gives a lot of people the wrong idea about what anime is.

But I could be wrong. I did mention that.

Look at PMMM/HxH... appearences can deceive. However, you and I haven't built that kind of relationship where I can trust your advice yet. Isi, Chewin and a lot of the guys here have good taste I can trust and we know what we all like somewhat.

But I can eve like bad anime.

Like Naruto.

I like it.

Though it's bad

A lot of the times Kishimoto has like... good ideas, but doesn't know what to do with them. I can talk about that Sasori stuff for ages.

Anyway I just like good anime. Mainstream or whatever.

One Piece is mainstream I guess... but I f*cking love One Piece.

Sim likes mainstream anime just fine, but only if they are good.

I haven't watched Elfen Lied, SAO or HLP, but from what I have gathered, they suck.

Well yeah.

This.

Everything I've seen of Elfen Lied leads me to believe it's tripe, thus I avoid it.

SAO gets a lot of smack talk here, from people I trust as well... so yeah...

Started the Greed Island arc.

This isnt gonna be like SAO right?

C'mon Milan...

A few episodes into Greed Island and it's not bad but it suffer so much just because the arc before it was Yorknew. It would be a hard task for almost all arcs to live up to it and Greed just.. don't have it. Will most likely still be good but so looking forward to Ant arc

Yeah SAO gets much deserved curb stomps. Even I've admitted to only watching it for a single character.

And progressive does fix a few problems. But that doesn't mean much since the main series is bad and progressive is just a spin-off.

What Sim said. After a while you get to know peoples tastes and vice versa and you learn who will give you solid suggestions for stuff. There's a few people in this thread if they suggest something I'll add it to my list without even having to look it up because I trust them and know they know my tastes.

Yeah, I mean like Geth's given me three things that have ended up in my favourite things.

Jojo

Vagabond

HxH

And possibly One Piece when I get further into it.

So this thread is pretty based

@Impulse

I can't help but feel you play into the "I'm just different from people" thing a bit too much. I mean I get it, we all have different tastes, some of us more then others and that's fine but a lot of the anime suggestions you get are ones that are widely well received and it would be easier to figure out what you like if you watched some more stuff others here are familiar with.

I mean look at me and Lotion. *very* different people but even we share some common interests like we both think LotGH is amazing. Everyone here shares some degree of common tastes. Just trying to figure out what they are. You really should take a look at some of the critically acclaimed ones that have been recommended to you here in the past. You might be surprised at what you end up enjoying.
