You get to a certain age, it becomes tiresome reading coming-of-age stories about typical teenagers. Some Geth wrote...

@Train00 Beck is a shonen manga.
Plus, mystical, horror and science fiction elements are handled with more sophistication.
With the possible exception of Gunnm Last Order. That one's...special.

Anyway I was not just talking about shonen or shojo, I was also talking about Josei. Still what do you mean when you say "coming-of-age stories about typical teenagers"? Like I mean I can think of some great coming-of-age shonen/shojo stories but not one of them has anything to do with typical teenagers. That's not to say all shonen/shojo manga are about coming-of-age stories, I don't know why anyone would think that.
Hunter x Hunter is a shonen series that handles some of those elements you said well, but then again the whole manga is just one big deconstruction of shonen hero/battle manga. And that helps make it interesting(also fools people into thinking it's going to be "cute friendship adventures").
Death Note was also a shonen manga that had a chance to be more sophisticated but blew it by the time Near shows up.
And one more point, it's true seinen manga tends to be more mature and sophisticated, there are still a lot of immature sh!t seinen manga like My Balls and Gantz(and there are tons more). So really do demographics have anything to do with quality? because I don't think so.

If the author can keep the quality up til the end, SKR will easily replace Shin Angyo Onshi as my favorite manwha/manga. Imo Ken Kitano as a character has joined the ranks(epic tier) of Guts, Kenshiro, Eikichi Onizuka. He is what Naruto should've developed into as a character, and not the child of prophecy clusterf*** Naruto is now.

Yeah, Sun-Ken Rock is pretty good. The Hierophant wrote...
@ Some Geth - I finally caught up with the latest chapter of Sun ken Rock, and it is one of the best seinen manga series i've read in years. In case you don't know of the series, it's about a high school student named Ken Kitano who moves to Korea to be a cop, in an attempt to win the affection of his friend Yumin who's a decorated officer. Kitano flunks the police academy, and is instead hoodwinked into a local gang as their de facto leader. To further add to his worries his group draws the attention of Yumin's Gangs & Narcotics division.
If the author can keep the quality up til the end, SKR will easily replace Shin Angyo Onshi as my favorite manwha/manga. I don't know if Ken Kitano is what Naruto should have become. They are both different charactes from two different series. But you are right, Naruto is a shell of what he once was as a character. It's bad when you miss the times when he was a brat kid.
On the note of epic tier characters, I would also add Nausicaä(the best manga character ever), Luffy, Gon and everyone from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Because they are badass and they don't take sh!t from anyone.

Hajime no Ippo - Boxing. At about 970 chapters and widely considered the best sports-related manga to date. Mostly has a realistic feel to it with slightly extreme skills involved.
I haven't read them myself, but I also hear Whistle, Major, and Slam Dunk are pretty top notch.
Eyeshield 21 - American Football. Finished. Started off pretty realistic but everything got exaggerated as time went on. Still not that out of nature though.
Kuroko no Basuke - Basketball. Just recently caught up with this. Still ongoing at 168 chapters I think. Very unrealistic. Special moves everywhere.
Prince of Tennis - Tennis. Finished. Known for being the DBZ of sports manga because the special moves are basically impossible in real life. There's all the New Prince of Tennis that's being published that's a direct sequel to the original.
Inazuma Eleven - Anime about Soccer. Original series finished but there's a sequal called Inazuma Eleven Go. Just like PoT, very DBZish with crazy skills everywhere. Based off of a DS game.

Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo, Captain Tsubasa, Eyeshield21, Rookies and Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl are all great sports manga, with Slam Dunk and Yawara! being the best of the genre in my view.
Prince of Tennis is poop.
The weird thing about PoT is that I know that there are 100 things wrong with it, but for some reason I still like it. It's probably just the DBZ fan in me.

But the thing is, Dragon Ball is a not-so serious gag/batlle manga. The "problems" with it are more often than not, just people over-thinking a silly series where stuff like this happens.shadysnorlax wrote...

So yeah, nothing really wrong with Dragon Ball(the manga), however the anime with it's Toei filler sucks.
Anyway that's just Dragon Ball, Prince of Tennis is still poop no matter how you look at it.

Big Windup is a decent sports anime, as long as you can deal with the main character crying every damn episode.

Funimation's dub had a lot of miscasting and they had no clue what they were doing with DBZ, they themselves even say so. I mean they got a little bit better when it came to the Kai dub(like Freeza's voice) but it still had some problems. Such as Sonny Strait(Kuririn) can't pronounce the Japanese attack names, Eric Vale still sounds too gruff as Trunks and worst of all they still had Sean Schemmel as Son Goku(meh) and Kaiō(eroeru wrote...
^^ That scene and ones from the Dead Zone movie where Gohan gets drunk are best. Ever. (but only in japanese, in English they're dumbed down)
A shame really that I couldn't even find a youtube clip with the original Japanese version of the latter.
Like I get it, Sean is friends with Chris Sabat and most people over here think of Sean as Goku more than anyone else... But he is still awful with those roles, It's funny when the guy from the Team Four Star parody dub is the best english speaking (adult)Goku there is.
Anyway yeah it's kind of sad not that many people in the west are into the Japanese version(the only good one) of Dragon Ball, I say not many people in the west even get what Dragon Ball really is. However those Team Four Star guys do get what the series is all about, and that helps in making a great parody. Also even though they like the dub they still make fun of it and those are some of the best moments when they do.

It's a bit slow at the start but it picks up fast, they do a good job at impersonating the dub cast and really it's just funny, more so to guy like me who knows Dragon Ball in and out(Japeanse version, dub and behind the scenes stuff).
:innocent:
