Berserk!
So Berserk is basically a story that deals with the nature of fantasy as well as dreams. It uses both of these things to show you (quite effectively imo) both the best and worst of humanity. When dealing with dreams you see peoples hopes, aspirations and goals as well as their fantasies for the world, the flip side of that is you see the darker aspects of the mind, the worst things people are capable of and the monsters that exists in each person deep down inside.
The story challenges you to question right and wrong, it takes it's protagonist and puts him in the role of the typical black knight. He's rash, selfish, violent, unsociable and shows you some of the greatest aspects of humanity through him, well it takes the villain and puts him in the role of the white knight who is a born leader, charismatic, beautiful and larger then life and through him shows you the worst things that a person can do. What it does so amazingly between the two characters is how you can always to some degree understand their actions for good or bad whether or not you agree with them or not. Despite the magical nature of the story all the motivations are quite human. It can take something despicable that is done in the story, and use that to later do amazing and wonderful things making you truly question what morality is within the story, as well as show you people who strive to make the right choice and be good people eventually causing much greater and darker tragedies then you'd imagine. It's morality is complex and cannot be simplified.
The setting explores many different kind of typical fantasy settings from high fantasy to dark fantasy to many inbetween. The world goes through a certain evolution which is arguably a larger part of the greater story. The world as it starts off is cold, based in reality and war well the later series progresses that into something more fantastical that cannot be understood quite so easily.
Berserk is a story that has managed to connect with me on great emotional and personal levels. It is both terrifying and yet awe inspiring. The world has an intriguing and engaging setting especially for someone who is drawn to fantasy settings in general. The art style is simply put amazing. It nails many different types of fantasy art styles from the eldritch horror type to the high fantasy dragons and elves and such type.
So yeah, if you're like me and drawn to fantasy in general and themes like dreams, and if you can put up with some disturbing content then I'd definitely recommend giving Berserk a go. Even though it's incomplete I consider it one of my favorite stories of all time and would give it a solid 10/10
(Could gush more about things like the characters and specific arcs but trying to keep this generalized)
