Seriously for a moment.

Shinsekai Yori. Is the dub any good?

I can't fathom any other voice than Taneda Risa voicing Saki so never actually even considered the dub

Aye, just a few to keep up with.

We just change avatars all the time instead.

I change mine in a schedule (every Friday of the US), and have a list of characters I will use as avatars on my About Me page, I try to help those that most commonly identify posters by their image.

Seriously for a moment.

Shinsekai Yori. Is the dub any good?

Not sure, but I'm skeptical, with a show like that.

Not me though.

Ok that's not strictly true, but I tend to keep Xanatos as my primary one that I use.

I always thought you just were Xanatos.

As I actually do have experience with SSY's dub (morbidly curious and decided to look at it), I can say you're much better off sticking to the sub, Dee. I hopped around past the first time skip and can say that only two characters aren't bleh compared to the original cast (thankfully Saki is one of them, for those curious).

He is like a very bad hiei from YuYu Hakusho

Guess I can't like all the people from Phantom Troupe.

From what I remember and heard the SSY dub is very hit and miss. Some good VAs and a few cringeworthy ones.

I think now is the  time I go for my first try at a review here. I will likely just use the official English translations, official spellings of the characters names and stuff. Also my reviews will be heavy on spoilers, I mean when you are dealing with a series where most people know who‘s a main character, what happens in the story,  it feels like there is no point to do a spoiler-free review. I will put SPOILERS in bold if it’s something really big, but I can already say that’s not going to happen in this first review.

A little history first.  In 1995 the hit manga Dragon Ball had ended, and with that  the next few years the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump had a throne with no king. Slam Dunk, as big a hit as it was, it ended a year after Dragon Ball. So there were three people who had the best chance to go next for the throne: Yoshihiro Togashi with his manga Hunter x Hunter(1998), a newbie, Masashi Kishimoto with his manga Naruto(1999) and last of all, one more newbie, Eiichiro Oda, who by the age of 17 won several awards, including second place in the coveted Tezuka Award. Those helped get him his job at WSJ as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki. Some years later he got two one-shots out, called Romance Dawn, the one-shots would later become his manga One Piece(1997).
Anyway flash to now, Togashi got a bit lazy and messed up his chances to get his manga on the throne, Kishimoto’s manga did become popular, but not enough for the throne. For Eiichiro Oda’s manga, One Piece did not just take WSJ’s throne, but Japan’s throne as top manga as well.
So is One Piece really worth all the praise and popularity? Well let’s take a look at it with some reviews.

One Piece: review part I. The first saga East Blue chapter 1. Here have some mood music.

The first chapter is named after the one-shots, Romance Dawn. It starts out with a page that sets up the overall feel of the story. The first page shows us Gold Roger the “Pirate King” who had achieved it all. Wealth, fame and power had all been his. Now he is at his execution, for an entire town to see. He had inspired adventurers throughout the world to sail the seas. So not surprisingly the final words he spoke before his death were. “My treasure? Why it’s right where I left it… It’s yours if you find it… But you have to go to that place!”. From the happy people in the town to the  narration, we learn that the world is about to go into a new era - “The Great Age of Pirates”.
It’s a simple page, but it already gives some history to the world and what’s going on.

Next we have this color spread. I like it, as it shows us our main hero, his role model and his crew and it gives us a preview of what our main heroine will look like.

Now we go to a small harbor village, where the narration tells us that one year ago. a pirate ship made the village it’s base, and that the village is at peace. We then see that on the front of the pirate ship, is a boy… A village boy by the name of Monkey D. Luffy, and he is holding a knife. The pirates ask him what he is doing, and he replies that he is sick of them not taking him seriously, that he is going  to show them how  tough he is. The captain laughs at this, saying “get it over with! whatever it is..”. Luffy then goes on to stab himself under his left eye, and that, of course shocks the pirates  with them then yelling at him. We cut  to the next scene, at a bar., where the pirates are having a toast to Luffy’s courage and to their great voyage. The pirates are having a great time, drinking, eating and singing. A fun bunch of guys.  We see Luffy is tearing up and says that stabbing himself didn’t hurt at all. The captain then replies with calling him a liar and saying that it was a foolish thing for Luffy to have done. Luffy then goes on to say that he is not afraid of getting hurt, and that he wants to go the pirate crew’s voyage, that he wants to be a pirate too.

At this point I like Luffy, he is a cute silly kid.

We now know, thinks to a title box(get used to seeing these) that the captain is named “Red-Haired“ Shanks. I like his design, those scars over his left eye are cool and the straw hat works very well on him. Anyway he laughs at Luffy wanting to be a pirate, saying that it’s impossible for him since Luffy can’t swim that would make him a pretty crappy pirate. Luffy replies, saying that it does not  matter as long as he  doesn’t fall overboard, and states that he is also a strong fighter and he has been training. Saying that his punch is as powerful as a pistol. Shanks, of course, does not believe him one bit - to Luffy’s annoyance .Some of the crew start to dance, telling Luffy to calm down, because pirates always have a good time, and that there are lots of islands to explore. And that the best thing of all is that pirates have freedom. Luffy is amazed at that, Shanks then tells his crew to stop putting ideas in Luffy’s head. The crew then says they  should take Luffy at least once. Shanks says that is  okay , but one of the crew has to stay behind . Then they say sorry to Luffy and start partying again. Luffy humorlessly gets angry at them.

Shanks says Luffy is just too young, and that maybe in ten years he will give him a chance. Luffy again gets angry and says that he is not a little kid. Shanks tells him not to get upset, then he offers him some milk. Luffy cheerfully takes the milk and drinks it. Shanks starts to laugh hard at him, saying that a real pirate would never drink milk. Luffy just gets more and more angry at the captain.

I like these types of scenes, they are quite funny, and shows that this manga will have a lot humor to it. .

Next, The First Mate says to Luffy that the captain is just doing what’s best for everyone. Luffy  asks what he means by that. The First Mate replies, saying the safety of the entire crew and ship rests on the captain’s shoulders. And that being a pirate is not just fun and games. There’s lots of duties like… Pillaging, hostage taking, heavy drinking and swimming  Also that the captain knows about the dangers of the sea,. That it can kill you in a thousand ways.. He goes on to say it’s not that Shanks wants to crush Luffy’s dream. Luffy does not believe this and thinks Shanks just likes to make fun of him. Shanks - on cue then yells “Hey, anchor!”- at him.

Next we meet Makino the bartender, who is happy to see Shanks and his crew having a good time. Shanks then adds that he just loves making fun of the kid  humorously Luffy then points at Shanks, the First Mate says he is now starting to believe Luffy may just have a point. Makino then offers Luffy something to eat, Luffy replies, saying just put it on his “treasure tab “. Shanks says that he hopes Luffy is not trying to swindle her, Luffy replies saying that he will become a pirate and find lots of treasure to pay her back. Makino cheerfully adds that they will both celebrate when that happens.

On the next scene we have Luffy asking Shanks how much longer his crew will stay at the village. Shanks tells him about two or three more voyages. Luffy then goes on to say he will learn how to swim by the time they leave.  Shanks, not paying much attention to him, says that’s good and he should do what ever he wants.. Suddenly, one of the bar’s doors is kicked off right into the bar, and a gang of men walk in, but we can‘t see what they really look like yet.. One of them says this is the first time he has seen pirates, and adds that they look like a sorry lot.. On the next page we find out  that this gang are Mountain  Bandits, and that their leader is named Higuma. Higuma says to not worry, they’re not going to bust up the place, they just want to buy ten barrels of grog. Makino, still in shock, replies that she is out of liquor.  Higuma then wonders what the pirates are drinking. Makino says that is true, she gave the crew the last of it. Shanks adds that he feels kinda guilty and says he is sorry about that. Then he offers Higuma the last unopened bottle. Higuma, who then looks mad, slaps the bottle, breaking it; the liquor gets all over Shanks.  Shocking Makino and Luffy  who happens to be eating a strange fruit - more on that later. The crew does not seem as phased.

Now we are starting to get into some jucy stuff.

Higuma, annoyed, says that Shanks is trying to take him for a fool, that one bottle is not enough. Shanks is more bothered by the mess then he is of Hiquman being a jackass. Hiquma then pulls out a wanted poster of himself, he is worth 8,000,000 berries (the money of the One Piece world, it’s probably close to yen I would guess), he goes on to say that he has killed 56 people, mostly fools like Shanks. Hiquma then states that Shanks and his crew, if they’re smart, should sail away soon. Shank is still more bothered by the mess and asks Makino for a rag. Hiquma then breaks the rest of the bottles on the bar, saying  “So, you like to clean? That ought to keep you busy for a while”. Higuma and his gang start to leave, as they do, Higuma bids farewell as well as call the pirates cowards.

After all that Makino goes to see if Shanks is alright, he says that he is fine, then he and his crew start laughing about what had just happened, almost like it had not  happened.Luffy does not understand what’s so funny, yelling that Hiquma made Shanks look like a weakling , and that Shanks should have fought him. He then goes on to say that they outnumbered Shanks, and that they looked tough, then he says “but what kind of a man let’s himself be treated like that then laughs about it? You’re a disgrace to all pirates!”.  Shanks just says “when you grow up maybe you’ll understand, kid. He just got some grog on me, that’s all. Needless killing doesn’t make you”. Luffy starts to stomp off but Shanks grabs his arm, asking where he is going. Luffy humorously replies “to find a real role model.”

Luffy still is trying to walk away, Shanks is still holding on to his arm, that’s when we see his arm begins to stretch really far. Shanks and his crew are shocked, but they look like they know what is going on. Luffy however is freaking out. One of the crew holds up one of his treasure chests, but it’s empty, and says that the Gum Gum Fruit is gone.  He then shows Luffy a picture of a strange looking fruit and asks him if he ate it. Luffy says yes and adds that it did not taste very good. Shanks explains that the  Devil Fruits are a rare secret treasure of the sea, anyone who eats one gets a power; in Luffy’s case his body is like rubber now. There is a downside to this - anyone who eats a Devil Fruit can never swim for the rest of his or her life. And with that comes Luffy having a big freak-out and Shanks calling him an idiot. All really funny how the scenes play out

Anyway I have been just going over what’s happening , since so far there have been no good openings to stop and give my thoughts. Well here they are so far on these scenes:  I like the interaction between Luffy and Shanks, it gives a good feel for the characters. Luffy being silly and stupid, where Shanks is being a good role model, ha! even if Luffy does not see him as one right now. I also do think it’s funny that Shanks pokes fun at Luffy.  On to Hiquma; his design really makes look like a jerk face, so it fits his simple character, nuff said.

I should also say something about the Devil Fruits, that they are more or less the gimmick for the fighting parts of this series. There will be a lot of unique and interesting powers that come from these Devil Fruits. As for what they are?  No one knows that yet, and I kind of like it that way, it’s a nice magic mystery type of thing.

We cut to a new day, where Luffy is going to buy some fish from the fish monger. The man there is surprised at seeing Luffy being so cheerful, all things considering what with him being a rubber boy who can’t swim. Luffy replies that he will just be a pirate that never falls overboard, and that he likes being a rubber boy now, showing the man that  he can stretch his mouth wide out from his face. Huh, if I had rubber powers I guess I would do the same thing. We also learn from this scene that Shanks and his crew are at sea. Next we meet the Mayor,  who pops over to Luffy ,saying that he will keep Luffy from becoming a pirate since it would bring shame to the village. He also adds that Shanks is not that bad of a guy but that Luffy should stay away from him and his crew, Luffy just puts his fingers in his ears and ignores the Mayor. He is really not the kind of kid that gives respect to his elders.

Next we have another cut to back at the bar. Where Makino wonders if Luffy misses Shanks and his crew.  Luffy says no because of how they were humiliated by the bandits. Luffy feels as though he misjudged them as being brave and tough, now he just sees them as wimps. Makino replies to him saying if he is sure about that, that some times you need more courage not to fight, and Luffy thinks she just doesn’t understand. The next panels show that Higuma and his gang are back for drinks at the bar.  Next we jump to a scene where Makino is in a hurry, and stops at the Mayor’s home to tell him about something going on with Luffy and the bandits.

Jump to the center of the village, where the bandits are beating on Luffy, making comments on how none of their punches or kicks are hurting Luffy since he a rubber boy. Some of the villagers are wondering if they should help Luffy, but if they did, they would surely be killed by the bandits. Higuma, as he beats on Luffy, wonders if he could sell Luffy because of his rubber powers. Luffy then picks up a stick and tries to attack Higuma, but it does no good, he kicks Luffy and puts a stomp on his head keeping his foot there, pinning Luffy down. Then Higuma says that he was only talking with his men at the bar, that he said nothing to offend Luffy. Luffy yells back at him saying that he did and he better apologize, then he calls Higuma a mountain ape. The Mayor and Makino show up, and the Mayor gets down on his knees begging for them to let go of Luffy and offering them money to do so as well. Hiquma acknowledges that the Mayor “knows how the world works” but says that Luffy has gone too far since he has done the “unpardonable” by attacking and insulting him  and Luffy then insults him again, ha! Higuma adds that does it, he is no longer going to sell  Luffy but is going to kill him,  and he pulls his sword out. Just then Shanks and his crew show up.  Shanks was wondering why there was no one to greet them at the harbor.

Shanks then is cheerfully surprised (being smug like a badass) to see the bandits, then says to Luffy that he thought Luffy’s punches were as strong as a pistol. Luffy just goes “Not now, cap”.  Higuma, surprised to see the pirates show up,  starts to make fun of them again. Saying that they should back off if they don’t want to get hurt, if they come closer they will kill them. Shanks walks closer to them and then one of the bandits points a gun at his head. Shanks has some of the best scenes ever here , saying to the guy with the gun, “Are you willing to risk your life“, and the bandit just says “Huh? What are you talking about?” Shanks then replies ”Guns aren’t for threats, they are for action. This isn‘t a game.” Just as he said that one of Shanks’ crew shoots the guy by pointing at him in the head from behind. The bandits say that isn’t fair, then Shanks’ First Mate replies “Stop whining, you’re not dealing with saints here”. Shanks then says “We’re pirates! And we don’t play by the rules!”. One of the bandits says that this was none of Shanks and his crew’s business.  Shanks replies “Listen up… You can pour drinks on me, you can throw food at me… You can even spit on me. I’ll just laugh that stuff off. But… Good reason or not… Nobody hurts a friend of mine!!!!”. Luffy is shocked  in a good way to hear himself being called a friend.

I really like this scene, as it shows Shanks is not just a silly guy but that he can be serious when it counts.

Higuma laughs Shanks’ speech off, he starts to say that pirates who are at sea on their little ships are no match for mountain bandits. Then he orders his men to kill the pirates. They start to charge with their swords. Shanks’ First Mate decides to take on the men alone, and does take them on with style. Putting his cigarette out on the face of one of the bandits, he then beats the rest of them up using his rifle like a club by holding the barrel. After that the First Mate is pointing his rifle at Higuma, he starts to light another cigarette, then  says, “What was that about pirates and Mountain bandits? If you wanna fight us… You better bring a battleship”. Luffy is amazed at how strong the First Mate is. Higuma starts to panic, saying that Luffy started it, but Shanks replies it doesn’t really matter since Higuma has a price on his head. Higuma, in a last ditch effort, throws a smoke bomb.  After the smoke lifts Higuma and Luffy are gone. Shanks, comically, is surprised that Higuma got away and took Luffy, one of  the crew tells him to calm down.  The First Mate looks like he knows where Higuma went.

We cut to the sea , not too far off from the village. Higuma and Luffy are on a tiny boat. Higuma comments that nobody would expect a mountain bandit to hide out at sea(what an idiot). He then adds that he only took Luffy as a hostage but now he no longer needs him. Luffy starts to try and attack him again, but unfortunately Higuma kicks him off the boat. Luffy, as he is falling down to the sea, starts to think about how unfair it is that he couldn’t get one punch on Higuma. We then cut to see a short flashback  back at the bar, where Higuma and his men are laughing about Shanks and his crew, mocking them. Luffy then stands up for Shanks, saying he should not call Shanks a coward. So now we see how the whole mess started, with Luffy wanted to defend Shanks’ honor.

Luffy, now in the ocean, can’t swim one bit thanks to the Devil Fruit powers he has. Higuma just laughs at this all, when suddenly a serpent-like sea monster shows up behind him and eats him and the boat. The poor jackass is now dead, oh well! The sea monster then sets his eyes on Luffy and starts to swim fast at him,  and we see a panel of the monster taking a bite. The next panel shows Shanks  holding Luffy, he must have swum out there. Shanks then gives the sea monster a very powerful looks stare, and says  “Get out of here!”. The sea monster does just that and leaves. Strange, and I would say maybe there is more to Shanks then meets the eye?

The next few panels are still of Shanks and Luffy at sea, Shanks saying the he found out from Makino that Luffy stood up for him to the bandits. Then Shanks cheerfully adds that Luffy is a tough guy and should stop crying, Luffy can’t seem to, as he points out that the sea monster took Shanks’ left arm(he was left-handed, too) during that panel where it took that bite. Shanks replies that  it was a small price to pay,  it was just an arm, and he is more glad to see that Luffy is safe.  Luffy continues to cry anyway , he is a just  kid after all, but I think everyone would do the same seeing someone they care about get hurt like that.

Next panel we learn from some narration boxes that Luffy now understands why Shanks couldn’t take him out to sea , that the dangers were too great, that he was not strong enough yet. But most importantly, Luffy realized what a great man Shanks is, and he vowed  to be like just like him one day.

Cut to the next scene where  we see Shanks’ crew is getting ready to leave the village for good. Shanks says that they have been using the harbor for a long time, maybe too long. He asks Luffy if he will miss them, and Luffy replies that he will be sad to see them go, but he won’t ask them to take him on board anymore; he wants to become a pirate on his own. Shanks comically sticks his tongue at Luffy, saying that he is still too little and that he will never become a pirate. Luffy then states that he will, that he will also have a ship and crew  better than Shanks’ .  Luffy continues that he and his crew will have the  biggest hoard of treasure in the world and declares he will become the king of the pirates. Shanks ,amazed that Luffy wants to surpass him, asks for a favor, and that is to keep his straw hat safe. He adds that the hat is very special to him Luffy begins to cry.  Shanks wants Luffy to promise to give the hat back to him when Luffy becomes a great pirate. As Shanks gets on his ship, the First Mate says that Luffy is going to make something of himself, and Shanks agrees, saying that Luffy acts like he did as a kid. The crew embarks on their voyage and we get some narration boxes saying that in ten years Luffy will begin his adventure on this very  same spot.

(mood music)

Next page, we have a ten year time-skip, and it shows Makino saying to the Mayor that she is surprised to see Luffy finally going on his adventure, and that she will miss him. The Mayor replies that if he does become a pirate he will bring shame to the village. So I guess some people don’t change in ten years huh? Some other villagers as well, are happy to see Luffy finally going on his adventure.
We cut to Luffy out at sea on a tiny boat, saying that it’s a good day to set out to sea. The next page the sea monster from ten years ago shows up to Luffy, Luffy with confidence says that he has an attack that he has been perfecting since the last time they met. The sea monster starts to charge at him, Luffy then does his attack called “Gum-Gum Pistol” where he stretches his fist out to punch the monster right in the face, knocking the beast out. Luffy says “That’s what you get you stupid fish” and then adds  - first things first  -  he needs a crew, about ten people should do and he needs a pirate flag. Because as we all know a pirate flag matters a ton. Luffy then yells out to the “world” that here he comes, and that he will be the next king of the pirates. The chapter ends with two narration boxes saying ”Luffy’s tiny boat floats on, his crew yet to be found… Luffy’s great voyage of destiny has begun!!!”.

Now I got to say, this was a strong first chapter, it promises a interesting adventure story, it has tons of humor, some drama, unique art-style, and cool character designs. Speaking of that, Luffy’s design is one I like, it’s simple but it works, and the straw hat and red vest is really a nice touch. The scar under his left eye is kind of like the claw-like scars over Shanks’ left eye, so that’s kind of cool. But all the character designs are sleek, if a little cartoony. For that matter if you don’t like cartoony art, this is also somewhat of  a gag shonen manga so cartoony art goes hand in hand with that.  So if you are looking for realistic art, and can’t stand anything silly looking at all, this is not the manga for you. It’s safe to say I like the art, I have varied tastes for art styles, as long as they fit well and are, you know, good. One Piece’s art fits and it is very good for what it is. The art looks like nothing else that came out at the time so that helps. That and the sea monster  who was really cool looking

The characters themselves are cool, I think. Luffy comes off like silly brat but he is just a kid. Shanks is interesting, a great role model character, and you don’t see many role model characters like him in manga.. He is fun, but he knows what’s what. Yet we don’t know much about him, and it adds a lot to him. I think most people will like Shanks, since he is so likeable.

I like the story so far, like I said, it promises a lot for the future and it does deliver, but more on that in later reviews. Anyway the chapter itself starts the story off well, it shows readers that  pirates can be fun guys and serious as well. Luffy and Shanks play off each other really well. There really is not much to Makino or the Mayor but  they are not the stars here so I give that a pass. Shanks’ first mate, who is named Benn Beckman (but we didn’t know this until after the first chapter), is really cool but that’s about it. Higuma is a jackass and looks like one, and that’s all he really needs to be for us to get happy when he is eaten.

One more thing is that people say the Arlong arc is where One Piece gets really good and I agree with them, but I would say if you like this first chapter, you are most likely going to like the rest of the series just fine. I know I did ever since I read it in my Limited Edition 2201 of 5000 Volume 1 all those years ago.

I am not going to talk about the anime version much in these reviews, but it should be of note that this chapter of the manga is episode 4 in the anime. They cut out the scene at the end where Luffy is out to sea and punching the sea monster. They only show that scene, like 500 episodes later, and that should tell you why I am not reviewing the anime.

I did a lot of play-by-play without much giving opinions on the scenes along with  adding quotes with this chapter. I will not do this in future reviews, but I feel this chapter needed it for the review to work. It helps give a good feel for this chapter, I think. And this was my first real review anyway. I thought I could do the whole first saga in one review but I found myself having a lot more to say about the arcs, so I will do at least one arc for one review now. The reason this review is only the first chapter is because, like I said, I think it needed the long play-by-play, then afterthoughts, as it’s a longer chapter than usual. And once again I don’t have much experience when it comes to writing reviews.

Well give me your thoughts, criticism and any tips? Besides making the reviews shorter, since I will be(or trying to anyway) doing that for future reviews.

Thank for the info! I didn't know it.
