That at that moment in time the roles reverse completely.
And even later on he'll do despicable things.
He's brilliantly written protagonist.
If you wanna make comparisons to uhhh.... Bleach and Naruto, then their protagonists have their 'inner demons' personified/symbolised into some sort of power or demon. The Nine Tails is obviously the first thing that comes to mind. It's not the character's fault they succumb to this evil, it's this second party which tempts them!
But nooo not with Gon.
The dude's dark side isn't some sort of evil demon manifesting within or a power he's taken unto himself. Gon's evil is (ugh cringe) the malice of human nature. Hatred, greed etc etc... they're all things we're capable of and that makes Gon scarier than most shounen protags when they flip their sh*t.

Yeah he's frustrating to watch.
But he's supposed to frustrate you.
Gon has always been selfish from early on.
See how he made Killua take that ball? Or when in Greed Island they call him out on it.
Gon never asked Killua "hey you want to take a card?" Nah he just thought of himself.
Gon never even asks about his feelings on anything.
He's a child! Like in a very literal way outside from what he looks like Togashi makes this painfully obvious by having Killua around as a contrast to his behaviour.
Like sure, find him annoying and all.
But don't deny how well Togashi wrote him. Because unlike other shounen protagonists, he's not the moral centre of the group, he's not shaped by those around him and he certainly isn't the paragon of all that is good for the plot.

I don't think I said he was poorly written man he's well executed. I just hate his character. He's doing things that make me not like 12 year olds.
