Also with me, certain things trigger emotional, personal responses. Like for example, the first time I've played on Halo 3 Snowbound. All I did was stare into the sky and such because it triggered something in me. Same with some of UT2004's maps and Halo CE Sidewinder, along with certain things, also including the Synapse from SnO and other things.
The early parts of Kaiba were the ones I enjoyed the most. They were much more to my tastes than the final episodes, which were still great, but not as enjoyable for me.
It's probably the show that came the closest to being added to my list of favorites in years. If it had kept close to the episodic nature of the early parts, exploring different, more personal and small scale stories, I think it would have made the cut.
Considering how hard it is to get into my favorites at this point, that's pretty impressive.

It's definitely on my list of favorites. Did Princess Tutu not make the cut for your favorites?

Not quite either. Might have been a favorite in a different life.
Something to keep in mind about what separate my favorites from the rest : I don't even try to objectively evaluate the shows I watch. All of my favorites are "favorites" because they:
1-Really play to my tastes
2-I ended up watching them at the right time for them to make a big impact on me.
It's basically just a list of shows that I have some particularly fond memories of. Thing is, after watching anime for so many years, I'm somewhat jaded now. The more anime I watch, the harder it is to make a truly lasting impression on me.
If I had watched the various series I've gone through over the years in a different order, my list of favorites would probably be different too.
Except for Aria, which would still be at the top. There's no dislodging that one.

Could I get a basic list of your top shows/animes or whatnot please?
That's one reason I sometimes like to space out rewatches of things I really enjoy. Just to make sure it wasn't just the initial thrill that got me.
Like with Boogiepop Phantom (I'll keep mentioning it til someone ****** watches it ). I was gifted it on my 16th birthday and tore through it. Loved it to absolute pieces. Then I waited to rewatch it til I was around 26 or so and I realized that the last line of the series had a lot more meaning to me after 10 years and a whole chunk of life happenings were under my belt.
SSY finally clicked for me at episode 3, 悪 Minoshiro. Better scenes with said characters, and Minoshiro is likely to throw people for a loop. Was a bit eh about episode 2, but was a neat diversion I suppose. ¯\(°_o)/¯ It's beginning is a strange setup, and curious where they're going with that.
Hopefully I can knock down at least 10 or so episodes tonight, the night is still young. Le Marathon begins.

Sure. Been keeping track of what I've watched with a little text file. Guess I can post the whole thing. Keep in mind I don't usually separate by seasons, most of the time I judge series as a whole.
Also, since some of this thread's favorites are missing from the shows I've watched, I'm going to include my plan to watch list so nobody jumps at my throat. Or at least the shows I'm almost certain I'll be watching at some point. The full list is a bit longer. Oh, and I've just finished Shin Sekai Yori today, so it's not in the plan to watch list anymore.

Like I've said, mostly just shows that had some elements that I really liked, and that came at the right time. Some are there in large part due to nostalgia, like Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. or The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
Also, I know The Mysterious Cities of Gold and ATLA aren't anime. Well for Cities of Gold it's debatable. I'm putting them in anyway.
Aria (The Animation, The Natural & The Origination.)
Kino's Journey
Mushishi (the whole series, though If I were to judge them separately, the second season wouldn't quite make it)
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (& 2nd GIG)
The Mysterious Cities of Gold
Avatar: The Last Airbender
The Twelve Kingdoms
Great shows / not quite favorites but most of them might have been in different circumstances.
Spoiler
Starting with this category, I'm not always as certain of their standing. They're not all equal of course, some are much better than others. But I really enjoyed all of these. Also, they're not really in any particular order.

Basically shows that managed to leave some sort of impression on me, but didn't quite make the cut for the above category. Some are pretty flawed, other are well made but I didn't enjoy them quite as much. Quality can vary a lot between them. Again, no particular order.

I guess I can do a quick mention of my favorites movies and manga too.
For movies, it'd probably be Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso. Maybe Millennium Actress. I enjoyed most of Miyazaki's movies, but Nausicaä and Porco more than the rest.
As for manga, we once again have Nausicaä, along with Aqua/Aria and Yotsuba&!. I don't read much manga though.
That took a bit longer to organize than I expected. Hopefully didn't make too many typos.

Oh yeah, I should probably add that to my "To Watch" list.
Maybe I'll be able to clean it one day. When I'm retired.
How... would you guys feel about a thread where I pit two characters against each other (In an even fight of course and unbiased) while explaining their abilities, weapons and such. I've considered making such thread. Something like Death Battle for example, but I write out all the details of the fight and such.
Good idea... or bad? (As long as I avoid complete bias and unbalanced fights).

I think you tried that before and it bombed horribly.
It's very pretty. I like it.
Don't encourage my horrible spending habits.
You say that as if it's something you just happened to see at the shop but of course wouldn't spend money on.
That's almost beat for beat exactly what happened.

Well, if it keeps such match-ups out of good threads, I don't see a downside.

Personally I think it's a bad idea. I hate those kind of things but that's just me.

I wouldn't like it and I think it would just feed into what I was saying about your appreciation of characters being overly focused on who would kick whose ass.
I hope this is nicer than the one-word response I was going to give.
