If you're going to get into Higurashi I recommend the Visual Novel over the anime. The VN does it WAY better.
Now time for Gangsta.

I'd like to think I can pay attention. I'd be more than a little screwed at this point with Kaiba if I couldn't!
Oh, and set in 1930's America... that's certainly something different. I'm down with that.
And as for my favourites going forward, I'll probably just remember the ones that had the largest affect on me personally.
Or the ones with the really good soundtracks. Good music can make or break a series for me, and if I keep listening to a shows soundtrack... well, its always going to be fresh in my mind to remember it as a favourite.
It throws a ton of characters at you to begin with and keeps throwing more every episode. It starts off almost in the middle of a story although there is a reason for why it does that which is connected to one of its main themes overall. It's a bit of an information overload but once you get a few episodes into it than you become use to it.
Definitely worth taking a look at eventually. The setting is great. And definitely agreed on the ones that effect you the most being the ones that stick with me more personally.

Sim, I got something for you. Here you go.

Is it bad that that was my favorite part of the anime? When he batted that dude to death for hitting his loli? I mean sure, batting people to death is wrong, but the dude was a dick hole and he had it coming, and yet at the same time, you know that Keiichi has ruined his own life, and you can't be sure how much remains of his sanity. So many mixed emotions. I wanted to feel good that Keiichi had triumphed, but at the same time, I couldn't help being a little scared for/of him. Also, dat song.Keiichi is a fookin' psycho either way man.

Oh sure.
I had the exact same feelings.
But it's still hilarious how he wasted the ahole.

I also learned that Tomoko's voice actress voices one of the ponies in My Little Pony, now what really amuses me about it is this:

Hurray for inside jokes.
Also, I think you'd like Love Lab, it reminds me of K-On!

But I'd rather go with the whole human malevolence theme in the anime than the VN's.
I think it fits the horror concept as well as all that happens a whole lot more.
Because love and hate, dark and light are just hyori ittai.

To be fair I haven't read the whole VN.
Only the first arc. So what I'm saying is stuff that I just researched quickly. So I'm just kinda fusing the anime knowledge and the VN knowledge.
Funnily enough a lot of people seem to think that the central theme to Higurashi is friendship... I'm getting that vibe more from the VN from the anime. I also can get where they're coming from... slowly.

Well the whole thing is resolved through friendship.
Which I found kind of lame.
But that's because I'm a masochist and enjoy endings where everything is bad and sour and I cry about it for five years to come.
However it's more to do that it was a horror.
But then again.
The grimdark theme of humanity's potential for evil etc etc always needs to be balanced out with some good things. Cos then we just have emo/edgy crap.
Like Keichii
Who is always willing to help his buddies.
Even if it means f*cking up his entire life.
The lad.
Which version of the VN did you get? I have the Steam version, but they've only finished one chapter so far.To be fair I haven't read the whole VN.

Steam.
I do have the full version on my laptop... somewhere but I'll probably wait for the rest to come out on Steam.

Yeah I did find it lame as well. But mainly like you it's a personal preference. Though the whole friendship thing does fit in the theme. It'd be kinda weird if it ended anyway else.
