Let's just say some anime challenges aren't worth it. :mellow:

First few arcs are great (especially when you get to this ending), Greed Island kind of putters around a bit if you ask me, ant arc is great again if you can get over some of the sillier character designs.

Yeah this is a pretty good view.
The newer show, the one that started in 2011 really fits the whole style Togashi is going for better than the old show imo.

Like I mean

Cute fun manga for kids!

And then you get to something like this.

The anime knows how to pull those feelings off. From happy-go-lucky theme song to, uh well yeah.

It really is a fun dark goofy series with a great cast and the 2011 anime understands this really well. It's my favorite anime adaptation of a manga.

@Isichar If we are just talking manga here, One Piece is like everything that is great about a shonen series and HxH is well looking at shonen manga from the uh, I guess you can call it the "deconstruction point of view". Like think Batman from DC comics and Rorschach from Watchmen. Both are awesome, both are kind of the same thing, just different takes on the characters and stories. So like that.

And for the anime just watch the 2011 version like I said. It is not too long, going to be over by this year. You will like it or at least find it interesting, I am sure.

Lies! Your just trying to keep me from discovering some deep and profound message hidden in those episodes and I won't fall for such trickery. Haruhi & the endless eight are up next on my list.

That could be interesting. I seem to usually like the deconstruction stories when done properly. At the very least I will add it to my list of things to give a try, although I tend to only watch 1 series at a time (minus ongoing ones I'm already caught up in) so I am not entirely sure when I will get around to it... soooo much anime to watch.

Watch the series, then the movie. It makes the endless eight worth it. :D

Watching Psycho-Pass right now. Interesting setting. Let's see if it does it better than Minority Report ...

That last one is everything but dark like the original. It's just someone shooting randomly behind a tree (talk about obvious censorship and youth-oriented anime).

@Isichar
Best compare for yourself.
Old one.
New one. (sorry, couldn't find one with the whole picture, but you'll get the drift)

In one, Killua pulls the guy's heart out and squeezes it to a splash. In the second the guy is blonde and Killua neatly packages the heart into a bag. Not to mention the music and overall ambience.

And try this. Though there's a lot of lore involved and it's pretty out of context just like this (the show isn't all fights, they're just memorable parts as lots of stuff in the plot realizes in them), the scene at least gives off the more darksy feel.

@Paranoia Agent

The show is great. What part don't you get or don't like?

I just finished up Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex OVA solid state society

:( got to say given that is likely to be the end of the series considering I.G hasn't said a peep about resuming GIS in quite a few years it was a pretty solid OVA.

Good little movie and although it's conversations could drag on a bit i didn't agree with the popular assessment of gun play over wordplay i thoroughly enjoyed myself and as usual was entranced with the musical score GIS has always had a good one and solid state society was no different :P

Yeah eroeru, not like the old anime could ever do this, no anime on TV could. I was only using one little thing to get the point across without getting into too many spoikers of cool stuff. But since you want me to! Here, here and here, f**k this one even shows Uvo take the bite lol. Happy now? Mind you they put this show on late at night now, even after all this dark sh!t. lol

And I still say the whole heart pulling out, is dark no matter what.

Both are edited from the manga version but one of them is less edited and it is not the older one. I also just think the new show fits the manga better what with being a dark happy-go-lucky story of death and fun.

Anyway only with one show do you get the whole story and that is the newer show. So if Isichar wants to watch something that has the full plot he/she should go for the 2011 version.

Hmm, should I maybe just consider reading the Hunter x Hunter manga instead? Otherwise I would probably just go with the 2011 version.

I would actually say go for the 2011 anime since there are tons of awful scans and fan translations online. And buying the manga is hard, since a lot of the volumes are out of print, at least the last time I looked. There is always Kindle tho if you really want to read the manga.

When are there not horrible fan translations? For ANY manga?

Sometimes I will get impatient when a a new chapter of something I really like, such as AoT comes out and read the half ass quickly done translations, which can actually be quite amusing. Usually I don't mind as long as I can understand the context well enough.

Some things can really get on my nerves, like trying to figure out who the hell Rivaille is on AoT and realizing thats just how this scanlation group translates Levi.

When people who do actual official translations used to do fan translations. They are good seeing as they went on to do it as a job. lol

And for right now these guys and some of the groups they have at Batoto are good.

Okay, is it one of those things that try to be so clever it ends up falling on its arse with pretentious nonsense? If so, I'll leave it. I was actually enjoying the mystery, but if it goes on to be one of THOSE things I'd rather not be disappointed.

@ Isichar - 2011 is ok. Even though it omits pretty important stuff imo, fast forwarding it and making the setting happy-go-lucky (which I dislike), I *did* find the adventure vibe enjoyable. Yet it's by far a different beast than 1999. So if one becomes a fan, I'd most definitely recommend watching the 1999 one afterwards.

Besides, the 2011 absolutely ruins my probably favorite character from the '99 version - Kurapika.

@simfam

Paranoia Agent doesn't try to be clever. It is pretty clever. More than anything, emotional, psycho(logical) and philosophical.
No nonsense. Ideas.

Dropping it sounds like a bad idea. It's weird, but I think it's very well done.

Okay, cool. Because so far it *is* clever. The whole double-personality arc was awesome and the last thing I'd want is for it to spiral down to something stupid. *cough* ME3 *cough* xD

At least with PA its only a 13 episode investment. ME was a 100 hour long game series.

I wonder how PA stacks up to something like Serial Experiments Lain which does not make any sense at the start but surprisingly manages to explain the situation relatively well by the end.

Do you mean M? It wasn't behind everything.

It meant escapism. The incidents were caused by *excuses* made up by the people. The whole show deals with excuses and falling to them, viewed from aside. Mad stuff. What's not to like? :happy:

(I tried my best to avoid SPOILER like language. I'm not too sure how well I accomplished that.)

Really, when I think about it, there's really no way I can say that you were wrong. Though that one event from her childhood was the catalyst for everything that eventually happened, it was her mindset (and the mindset of others) that ultimately created the super big event at the end.
